Shanks 1974

Caught this on Turner Classic Movies and oh my goodness this was such a peculiar film. This fantasy horror is sort of silent/sound film hybrid where the lead character speaks with intertitles and everyone else speak normally. That's quite interesting and certainly adds a certain offbeat element to what's a pretty fun and lighthearted storyline. It starts out very lighthearted at first to draw you in and works its way up into the uncomfortable and the macabre. The soundtrack works well for the atmosphere and Marcel Marceau as the mute carries the film effortlessly. It's only during the unnecessary home invasion part that my enjoyment lessened a bit.

Weird, weird, weird. Noted mime Marcel Marceau manipulates dead corpses as marionettes in this haunting film....the final directed by William Castle. Haunting and odd, I will remember it more than I liked it.

I gave it a 3 but it's been a while and I started thinking of it again. It never leaves the mind so it must have some underlying quality. Maybe I'll give it another go soon.
