Silent Night 2012

This is a very loose remake of the original 1984 classic with some nods to the original and sequel. I find it very entertaining. While the original is very campy, this one is more gruesome and more serious in tone but still comical in concept. Expect some slasher stereotypes in here but there's a mystery built around the killer santa figure that makes it more interesting. The mask is really cool, the kills are creative and brutal, overall an entertaining addition to the holiday slasher. It's on UK Shudder.

Santa Claus brings the pain in the low-budget horror film Silent Night, yet another inferior remake of a cult classic. In a small Midwestern town a Santa Claus killer is on the loose, brutally murdering the naughty. Starring Jaime King, Malcolm McDowell, and Donal Logue, the cast is actually pretty decent; though their performances are awful. And the plot is all over the place, never really explaining why the killer kills who he does or what he’s after; it’s all random. Additionally, the gore is incredible gratuitous and comically bad. Formulaic tripe, Silent Night is a poorly made slasher film.

As a fairly loose remake of "Silent Night, Deadly Night," the 2012 "Silent Night" merely adopts a few elements from the original and largely tells its own story. What the films have in common is that a dude dressed as Santa kills a bunch of people. And there really are a lot of pretty naughty individuals in this small town, so Santa has his work cut out for him. The kills are brutal and plentiful, and the tongue-in-cheek humor of the original is largely dispensed with, except for a little black humor. As a result, this is a much colder film, which is reflected in the color grading, and I didn't particularly enjoy the visual identity. At least Jaime King is a reasonably likeable lead actress, and Malcolm McDowell is entertaining as usual. Ultimately, however, "Silent Night" suffers from the problem that many slashers have, namely that pretty much all the victims are such unsympathetic assholes that you simply can't sympathize with them. Personally, I definitely prefer slashers, where I care when characters die. That's why I can't really recommend this remake.

A killer Santa is on a killing spree in a remote town on Christmas Eve. I've never seen the original but this one was a load of fun. Lots of cool, creative and well-made bloody gory kills. Neon lights, creepy music and great acting from Malcolm McDowell and especially Donal Logue. The killer Santa was a cool one and he's actually frightening. Liked the brief origin story they gave him.

Horror movies led me to believe that there would be far more fire axes in public buildings than is actually the case.

That said, this is a mad-lib horror story where they fill in the blanks with a type of killer, a type of weapon, and a type of killing, none of which are inventive in the least.

LOVE this movie. Sick, twisted, and sadistic good time.

I thought it was really good. The acting is mostly great and it has a good pace. I thought the plot had some pretty big holes but it was fun to watch. If you like a slasher movie with some jump scares tossed in for good measure, you can't go wrong!
