Hilarious! And Jason Statham is ridiculously funny too!
Everything about this movie looked terrible to me before seeing it. I assumed it was just a lame, dumb comedy that would have nothing unique or interesting at all.
I was very wrong about this assumption. Turns out this is a really good comedy using genre staples very well. Probably the biggest upside is that they created a strong lead female character. The jokes aren't really about how she's a terrible choice for an agent. Instead, it is often showing her as very good at her job, just in unconventional ways. That is a big plus, the fact that they don't take a sexist route was the biggest surprise for me.
I really like Melissa McCarthy and I like movies about spies so odds were good that I was going to like this, and I did. I laughed quite a bit and thought that Rose Byrne nearly stole the show. Jason Statham was an inside joke that got tired quickly, though.
"Spy" becomes a less funny when it turns up the lewdness and swearing later in its run time. I don't have a big problem with that sort of thing overall, it's just that sex, dick, and poop jokes can run their course pretty quickly.
very funny movie. It keeps fun factor right from beginning upto the very end. Funny character of Jason is hilarious too. Plot is also strong and the story keeps you stick to screen all the time.
It lasted 35 minutes before turning this ridiculous movie off. Humour tailored for adolescent kids - seriously! Quite disappointing given the rich cast.
Utterly ridiculous, and not in a good way. Not even good as background noise.
Jason's the worst movie
It was an alright movie. Positive, had funny moments and lines, but not great overall. I think mostly enjoyed the side character portrayed by Jason Statham.
Again, McCarthy thinks incompetence is funny. Even if it were, she fails in every way. The switch half way through to be over the top annoying is just that. How absolutely horrible. Just play a normal person for a change because the attempts at comedy are cringeworthy.
The rest of the cast is brilliant, but nobody was really funny. There were lots of groaners, lots of eye rolling attempts to be funny, but I only think I smiled a couple times, and I never laughed. I take that back. Aldo was an amazing character. I laughed when he gets the door shut in his face. That short scene was actually very funny and really stood out. The dialogue is great for its wit and the plot is good. Basically everything is good except McCarthy.
The movie is decent despite McCarthy. The sad part is that if McCarthy has used her natural wit and played a serious roll with wit and charm, she could have knocked this out of the park. McCarthy just takes these over-the-top, try-way-too-hard-to-be-funny, roles and utterly fails. The in between bits where she isn't trying to be funny are the real gems.
I have such conflicted feelings about this movie. I think the script is great, the dialogue is amazing and Paul Fieg directed this brilliantly as always. But I'm really not a Melissa McCarthy fan, though this might be most I've liked her. Unfortunately for me, personally, vomit will pretty much ruin a movie, though I'm glad it was kept to a minimum. And there's just a general crassness to this movie that I'm not generally a fan of. But the action was good and it did have some really funny moments. Seeing Statham really lean into playing basically a parody version of himself was great, and every word from Miranda Hart was absolute gold. So I really don't know where I sit now with this.
I loved this movie from start to finish the first and every other time I watched it! Always makes me lough and I really LOVEEE the plot
Well this is surprising.
The story is about a CIA analyst who just so happens to be responsible for the success of some of the most dangerous missions. But when her partner suddenly disappears and another top agent is compromised, she finds herself going from behind the desk to into the field - deep undercover to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer and prevent a global catastrophe.
Spoof movies on spy films isn't anything new, I mean we've seen some good and some bad ones that are not written very well and the jokes are just flat. "Spy" was a movie that I didn't really care about until the film got it's early reviews from critics and it got positive reviews. So I've just seen the movie last night and I thought the film was very funny comedy, and it's ten times better than Tammy that we got last year.
Melissa McCarthy can be a hit or miss with me, because I know she can do a great performance in comedy movies, I mean she got nominated for Oscar in Bridesmaids so that's saying something. In this movie I thought she was going to be a clumsy over weight women who always slip up and makes things worse, you know the cliches in those comedy's, but I was extremely surprised that this didn't happen in this movie as Meliassa McCarthy character has a comedic ark to her, but she also played a different character and not the ones that she normally pick. Melissa McCarthy did a good comedic performance in this movie and she did better in this movie than in Tammy.
The director of the Paul Feig who previous did Bridesmaids, The Heat and he's doing the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. He directed the movie pretty good and although out the film I keep thinking of The Heat that he did and I'm saying that in a positive way, as it shows he can mix action with comedy very well. Great work Paul Feig.
The rest of the cast in the movie like: Jude Law, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham all did great in the movie, as both of them got their own funny lines and at least they wasn't wasted like in some other movies seem to do with a big cast like this, but luckily it worked out fine.
The writing was good, the one liners in the movie has to be funniest one liners I've heard since the movie Whiplash and some of jokes really worked.
Now for the problems: Some of the jokes in the movie are sometimes predictable and just fell flat to me. I know this may sound like a small little nick pick to most people, but the movie has a Jame Bond like opening just like Bond films always open, but of cause this movie does it's own take on it and it really wasn't all that good, as I said before it's a small little nick pick but it could have been a lot better, I'm just saying.
Overall Spy is a decent comedy and it's way better than some spoof movies on spy films. The acting was good, some of the jokes worked, Paul Feig directed the movie with style by mixing the action and comedy perfectly, and the movie is enjoyable.
the funniest movie ever lol
Toilet humor like somebody else commented, "haha it's funny 'cause she's overweight and unattractive, get it?"
I giggled just once in the first part of the movie. The second part was just free insults to everybody, like the writers didn't want to continue producing the movie...
Really shitty movie, it was bearable just because of Jude Law and Jason Statham (my love).
Not a single subtle joke, just toilet humor, "haha it's funny 'cause she's overweight and unattractive, get it?" and awkward situations (which made me cringe at how fake they are, and not at the situations themselves). The only parts that I enjoyed were the constant bullying of McCarthy and a couple of anti-climactic plot turns. I guess one needs to be piss drunk to laugh at any of this.
a day later and im still laughing at this fucking movie.
Melisa’s best movie and Jason Statham was hysterical.
I absolutely loved this movie, it was sooooo funny, definitely in my top 20. An extremely solid and deserved 10/10.
Could have done without all the fart/poop/puke jokes. But it's a Paul Feig movie, what did I expect?
Plus, all the twists hardly make sense.
The beginning was a bore, but the comedy escalated. I laughed multiple times near the middle to the end. #ShiftvW8
Fun but instantly forgettable. If you don't like Melissa McCarthy, this isn't going to change your mind. Standouts are Jason Statham, playing against type as a bumbling idiot, Rose Byrne, as the villain and Miranda Hart, in (AFAIK) her first Hollywood role.
Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statnam are hilarious together.....laughed beyond belief
I'm not a Melissa McCarthy fan, and I wouldn't have rewatched this if it hadn't been put on at a friend of mines. I didn't mind it too much because this is one of the better movies she has ever starred in. Not that it says much...
Spy is funny in places but seemed very forced in other. The acting is above par for a movie like this, but many of the actors look a bit disinterested in it all. Never a good thing for any movie.
The one that stood out was Jason Statham. His character is almost a parody on what he usually plays, and he's actually quite funny. Half a star extra just because of him.
If you just want something stupid to burn time with, it's not bad.
Who shot Karen Walker? Fine? But overall great movie, cracked me up!
I find as long as the movie is under 3hrs that the director should take as long as they need to tell their story.
Excellent sense of humor!!!Jason Statham kai Peter Serafino on fire!!
Unpredictably funny. Melissa McCarthy's character definitely becomes more vibrant as the movie progressed. The story line had a few kinks and twists and generally kept me interested. The 'R' rating I think is what made this movie successfully. Any softer, and this would have likely been a flop. The action scenes are corny, but that's what make it funny to watch.
so fucking good oh my god
Loved it. Melissa was flawless.
Jude Law doing the absence of accent equals american (that most British people believe is correct) and Jason Statham as always not changing his voice at all (explained away as having become a US citizen). Funny that the top male CIA agents are British and the foreign terrorist is American. They could at least have a scene with other agents that sound American.
looooool
the best comedy movie .. so funny
a must watch!!! i 100% guarantee this will be the funniest movie you will ever see
Brilliant! Melissa is a Comedy Queen! I also love Jude Law. Bridesmaids and Tammy cast reunion.
Didn't like it that much, i was expecting for it to be funnier, all jokes was in the trailer. Statham was good though
A few scenes and a few jokes won't make me regret these two hours. ;>
Dragged out a little about 3 quaters in, but it wasn't regrettable. Far from it. The humour was genius, and the timing and acting were spot on. The action was cheeseyly good, and the story was definitely James Bond. Parody movies are some of my favourites but so easily ruined if taken too seriously. This took itself a little too seriously but also very unseriously. There's a certain scene, and if you've watched it, you know what scene I'm talking about. It caught me so offguard, I almost armadilloed myself onto the floor.
Hilariously funny, the action-comedy Spy is a clever spoofing of the spy genre. When an arms dealer learns the identities of the CIA’s top operatives, the CIA sends untested data analyst Susan Cooper into the field in order to track down the location of a nuclear weapon that the dealer is selling. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham and Jude Law, the film has a strong cast. And, the comedy is quite clever, and does a wonderful job at lampooning the genre tropes and clichés. However, McCarthy’s brand of humor gets a little tiring after a while, and is kind of crass. Still, Spy is tremendously entertaining and delivers a lot of laughs.
Ooooooh its a comedy. It supposed to seem funny when you watch it! ? ! ?
"During the threat of an assassination attempt, I appeared, convincingly, in front of Congress, as Barack Obama."
I enjoyed this film. It was surprisingly well-written, edited, and flowed decently enough despite the story being something done often. The action sequences were also surprisingly well-choreographed and edited, further enhanced by the utilization of slow-mo, which has to be one of the best uses of it; I feel like it's usually horrible. And the cinematography was quite adequate, while the score and the general filmmaking were pretty decent.
My only complaint is some of the initial humor with Melissa McCarthy's character, that awkward (and cliché) humor. I feel like that's overdone, and it's also a bit cringy. But some people, generally women (a generalization), seem to like that sort of thing: because, I guess, it's cringy or something along those lines. There was also a severe and offending lack of Jason Statham/Rick and Peter Serafinowicz/Aldo. I feel like there also wasn't enough of Rose Byrne/Rayna even though she had more screentime than them. Melissa McCarthy didn't carry this film; Rose, Jason, and Peter did. But she had her moments: specifically when Susan grew more confident and into her role.
And there were a couple of moments that gave me a surge of second-hand embarrassment before anything even happened, also further amplified by the awkward nature of Susan Cooper. Characters like that will be the death of me. You know the entire point is to create moments/use that awkwardness to attempt comedy or maybe make you wish you didn't have eyes or ears, and I feel like some people LIKE THAT (!?), which is horrifying. Still, thankfully, while taking peeks at what was happening, those moments weren't that bad.
I want to say there should've been a more prominent romance element. Susan and Rayna, anyone? That's the main one, but Susan and Rick or Susan and Aldo, too. Or, if you're feeling a little naughty and risqué: all of them (!). Spoiler alert: one of those did happen, BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH! Okay, sorry about that. I'm sure some people are glad there wasn't that big of a romance element, as that's probably too often inserted into films like this. I guess the subtle undertones were sufficient enough. But, man. Come on. Susan and Rayna!? Ugh. But what about Bradley/Jude Law, they ask? To which I reply: Who cares; Rayna was better, and so would've been Rick or Aldo, and they hated me because I told them the truth.
Subverting possible expectations was appreciable. Given the nature of Susan, you'd expect her to be like that for the whole film, and you wouldn't expect her to have kicking-ass within her. That wasn't the case; she had the moves: and even grew as a character by becoming less awkward and more confident. And you'd expect Rick, played by Jason Statham, out of all people, to be the typical badass who doesn't seem to be in the same film because he's cleaning house: yet instead, he's a bumbling idiot. I feel like subverting expectations in that fashion is hardly done/has hardly been done, ever, let alone after this film. And that, in and of itself, is typical, which is spectacularly sad.
The highlight was, without a doubt, the character of Rayna Boyanov. The film was decent enough to start, but once she and Susan met, that was a massively positive shift. Rose Byrne did a phenomenal job. I'm not sure if anyone else thought this, but she could've been a Gillian Anderson-doppelgänger, from how she looked and spoke; down to how she carried herself. And, funnily enough, I thought she was in one of the Twilight films for some reason. I guess I was thinking of Ashley Greene or Elizabeth Reaser.
The second-place highlight was the enjoyment attached to the duos of Susan/Rayna and Susan/Rick, especially the latter. The (perfect) cut to Rick's first appearance was great: and him listing those things in the hotel room, him in the restaurant, saying he's immune to 179 different poisons, the scene with him and Susan struggling for dominance in the club while arguing (especially when they started dancing and clapping while on their knees), and the two scenes at the end of the film: getting his jacket stuck and holding unto Susan, were comedic gold. I guess I'm trying to say that Jason Statham/Rick was a massive highlight, which extends into my feeling that there was a severe lack of him.
And there was also a severe lack of a sequel to this film. It would've been enjoyable seeing Jason Statham be more prominent and the duo of Susan/Rick on the screen again, but I think the window for a sequel has long passed. That's unfortunate; I think a sequel could've been just as good or better.
This film was an enjoyable watch, and I'm glad I watched it. The first act was probably the weakest; it sure seemed that way with the second and third re-watches. After that, the film hit its stride and didn't let up. I think the most focal point responsible for kicking that off was when Susan and Rayna met. Besides the first act, in a sense, the overall film was enjoyable; enough for me to rate it as high as I have.
(P.S.) Allison Janney seems to blink more times than what's presumably usual, especially during the showing of Susan's time at The Farm, which probably helps with saying the lines in a specific (correct) way. Now, that's all you can notice. You're welcome for pointing that out.
This thing has no business being this good. It has so many good characters, there are about 4-5 scene stealers in this movie. The script is consistently funny (thank god for the R-rating), occasionally bordering on being cheap and trashy, but it’s mostly clever. There’s a little too much handholding for my liking, but the amount of exposition is overall tolerable. The action is competently handled by Feig, even though he should’ve dialed back on the amount of slowmo. The acting is way above average for the kind of film that it is, even Melissa McCarthy is quite good in this. I just wish the craft was a bit better. The cinematography is by no means bad, but a lot of scenes are just a bunch of close-ups cut together. The score doesn’t really stand out in any way either. Still, this is that rare action/comedy crowdpleaser that can be enjoyed by just about anyone, and I respect it for that.
7/10
Much, much better than you think it would be. Excellent performances all around.
Very funny, if somewhat crude in places. All the cast play their parts well and the action is good.
I was a bit disappointed with this movie. It got a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes but I think that this movie is a classic example where everyone agreed that the movie was good enough to get a positive review even thought it is by no means great. All of the pieces were there - good concept, great actor (McCarthy is always nails) and a template (Guy Ritchie). That said.... the movies was just ok. I think the big problem was the dialog - so many of the exchanges were just poor. At different times I wished it would be more like Guy Ritchie movies but that just never happened.

Half of humor is good the other half is terrible but overall it's a good action-comedy movie with some great perfomances.
P.S Byrne is pure beauty
Well this is surprising.

Super good fun. Everyone plays their part well with superb comedic timing. Statham is a treat
Once again, Melissa McCarthy is hilarious, which was to be expected. Loved this movie.
This may still be the best Melissa McCarthy movie. Just so much fun.
total fun for a cozy saturday night
hahahahahaha Jude Law is sooooo cute
Lol wish there were more scenes of Statham
Jason Statham is soo funny! i liked this movie
A desk-bound CIA analyst (Melissa McCarthy) gets placed in the field after a list of active agents is compromised, the theory being she won’t be recognised. She is sent to track down a nuclear weapon hidden in a suitcase.
Spy has all the hallmarks of a Paul Feig comedy; a female lead and a fresh take on an old genre. Luckily what worked for him in Bridesmaids also, to a large extent, works here. Somehow he manages to avoid making a straight up spoof of a spy movie, while at the same time still toying with the tropes we are all so familiar with.
If we must talk about parody, it’s perhaps more accurate to say that Feig is having a jab a spy-spoof films rather than spy films themselves. He’s not only having fun at James Bond’s expense, he’s also having a crack at Johnny English.
The witty script is bolstered by a strong, self-aware cast. McCarthy has shown she can be funny in the right film (so far only Paul Feig films…) and she quickly gets us on her side. We’re laughing with her more than at her, which makes Spy feel like it’s going on more than just cheap shots at her expense.
The supporting cast are equally talented - Rose Byrne is hilarious as the villainess; a spoilt, rich brat all grown up. Jason Statham plays it straight down the line and does his usual cockney gangster thing; in this case the contrast with the sterile CIA environment is very funny. Of course he’s mocking himself slightly but he makes no attempt to wink at the audience, it’s pure deadpan, Statham-style.
There’s the typical boring action sequences, always a weak point in the genre, and the film is overly long (2 hours 10 is a lot to ask of us, no matter how funny), but all in all this is a rare example of a laugh-out-loud funny & surprising spy comedy.

Funny, fast, I don't know if hilarious but was good. A very impressive Statham by the way, with a funny character. This was fun to watch.
Nice. Movie kinda loved it
i want to see this one so bad !!!!!!! love it
wil deze zo graag zien
Funniest movie in a long time. Brilliant actors and Melissa - simply WOW
Just finished watching this and walked into the cinema expecting a load of half-assed jokes, but I have to say if it wasn't for Peter Serafinowicz's charecter Aldo/Albert; constantly groping McCarthy and telling her that he wants to fuck her, this film wouldn't have been half as funny. The other half of the movie belongs to Jason Statham and Rose Byrne bullying McCarthy on a regular basis. I hope to see a sequal to this movie in the future but this film already has great replay value and I'll be watching again very soon, 7/10

One of the best comedy movies I've seen in a long time. Jason Statham was brilliant and Melissa was so good, she was the queen of the movie. Great cast, really.
So funny, I want to see it again already.
