Wow, this is a bad film! I normally thoroughly enjoy Scottish dramas. However, having spent 2 hours and 15 minutes watching this, it's 2 hours too long. It's disjointed with lazy writing and unutterably boring. It only gets as many as 2 stars because of the scenery.
The amount of accolades and awards should have been a giveaway that this was not going to be a good movie. The scenery and prose were the shining stars of an otherwise poorly edited, directed and written film. Some scenes/shots seemed to linger for so long that you had both a sense of boredom and foreboding and then nothing would happen and conversely in the blink of an eye major plot points/change would occur. The tone and soul of this film was really off kilter.
Bleak but in a good way.

This is a tale that Thomas Hardy would be interested in... death, despair, tragedy...not many laughs in this bleak but involving drama.

Absolutely miserable adaptation of a loved Scottish classic. Saw it in an almost empty cinema with my mother (her choice) and at the end she turned to me and said, "Well. That was awful." So, so, dull. Dragged interminably.
