Tales from Earthsea 2006

I am a huge fan of both Ursula Le Guin and Studio Ghibli but the story and the presentation just weren't all they needed to be. The fragments of story they excerpted from the novel lacked cohesiveness, so the characters' stories were truncated and lost. The art work was true to the beauty of Ghibli. I'm disappointed that I can only give this film a 6 (fair) out of 10. [Animated Fantasy]

As I was watching this movies I kept thinking: "Wow, every frame is like a painting! Too bad the plot doesn't make sense at all :)"
And this is how I felt for all the 1h and 55 minutes of film. It's pretty, but the story is left on its own and I'm sure is very different from the books; and I'm also sure that who read the books got the story much better than who didn't, just like Howl's Moving Castle (which is at least a little bit more polished than this movie and has a better soundtrack).

Beautiful, Gripping & Enchanting. Tales from Earthsea is another spectacular addition from Studio Ghibli. Everything about this movie is utter perfection, from the story telling, animation and world building. Tales from Earthsea is everything I love about Fantasy movies. 10/10

i think there's a couple pieces of the puzzle missing&answers remaining unanswered towards the end of the movie so i went to google. the answer i've found to one particular question didn't only fill in the blanks but it made the movie 10 times better in my eyes. the rest is quoted from reddit :)

therru turning into a dragon: it was explained at the opening of the movie that humans and dragons were once one immortal creature, but humans split from the dragons to pursue their own goals. therru is the living link in this myth, having forgotten her true dragon name and being transformed into a human. therru's true name means "light" which is why when cob kills the human therru at sunrise she remembers who her true self is and is able to return to her dragon form.

This one not has good as most of the Studio Ghibli franchise and didn’t have the same feel and didn’t think much on the storyline and some of the effects and animation were alright, others not so much and did seem darker from the rest I’ve seen so far.

It had a little feel of lord of the rings and did like the dubbed voice actors specially (Timothy Dalton) that played the wizard sparrowhawk, the names hawk, sparrowhawk.

The themes and memorable imagery in Earthsea will be familiar to fans of Studio Ghibli, but the storytelling and animation are three steps behind.
