The movie is fun, lots of over-the-top action (some are so extremely impossible that they were funny), and of course Arnold with his famous "I'll be back" and other well known sayings. I felt really nostalgic watching him, it's like nothing has changed since I was a little kid. All the time-traveling and changing the timelines was mostly understandable, so the story is not bad either, but the main plus is Arnold, nice to see him back, as he said he would be :)
I can't even with this movie. The plot holes and fundamental paradoxes at the center of this entire series are hard enough to stomach with a suspension of disbelief, but this movie takes it to a whole new level. I didn't even pay attention to most of it, and I have the feeling I would have been just as confused and bored even if I had been invested.
To me the Terminator franchise dropped the ball by not just having part 4 continue the story directly after part 3. Part 4 should have started out with John Connor's first days during the apocalypse.
I think a more interesting story was missed out on. That doesn't mean they should keep going and going to try and get it right. Especially Since Genisys isn't as fresh of start for the series as it wants to be.
The movie feels too much like it wants to be as good as the second one. But that's hard to do when there's all action and brains.
This movie is a insult, from the cast (worst Sarah Connor ever) to the cheated storyline, nothing in this movie saves, if you liked TERMINATOR 1 and 2 you can't like this garbage. ZERO.

I had a hard time deciding what I thought of this film. I finally saw it this past weekend (almost a year after it came out).
Things I liked:
--It's ties to the "Terminator" main storyline from movies 1 & 2. T1 is more important to have seen, but there are easter eggs for T2 fans throughout.
--I loved the effects that allowed Schwarzenegger to battle his younger self (though I wish they would have done the same thing for Bill Paxton so he could reprise his role from the 1984 film as "punk who gets killed").
--I thought it was a nice twist for who they chose as the main villain.
--I liked Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, but Linda Hamilton in T2 can't be topped.
--FX were great. Can't go wrong with liquid terminators!
--They did a good job making you question Pops' motivation throughout the movie
Dislikes:
--I had far too many questions at the end of this movie: Who sent Pops? Why? Who controls the time stream? If there will be more movies, then what's the point of all the earlier ones? How many times can Skynet be stopped/survive? Did Terminator 3 & Terminator Salvation just not count? What's the difference between a T-101 & T-800?
--It seemed like it was 2 movies in 1. The 1st half (in 1984) & the rest.
--The second portion of the film felt rushed. I just can't seem to describe it any other way.
However, having said all that...I think the movie had more good than bad. Not a classic, but worth seeing if you liked T1 & T2.
A fun mess, I guess. The special effects were great and all the action well executed, I'll give them that, but the story line wasn't. I think that the whole time traveling was a bit too much, even though it was well work it. And I didn't liked too much this Sarah Connor, I mean, for me is not a character for Emilia Clark, Sarah is tough and messy, and Clark is simply beautiful and cute, and despite she tries to do it good (and at times she does) just don't work, not for me. On the other hand, was good to see the original Terminator once again, Arnold just own the character, and proves it in the film.
Plothole 1. John Connor will never fight Arnie, seeing it was the only father figure he ever knew since Terminator 2. Same model, or not. FFS its the future Arnie who killed John connor in the resistance who got sent back to protect his childhood counterpart. (BIGGEST PLOT HOLE IMO).
Plothole 2. John Connor will never side with Skynet. Sarah Connor bred him since birth to despise them and taught him all their weaknesses. I HIGHLY doubt he'd turn to the dark side with just a flick of a finger.
Plothole 3. They never did explain where Sarah's Terminator came from or who sent it... NEVER!
Plothole 4. So it seems Salvation which is a better move IMO is not cannon. What BS!
I hate when movies go the Xmen days of future past route and show all the die hard fans the finger for not keeping the story coherent.
This movie is an unfortunate mess.
There are way too many characters and story lines that added nothing to the Terminator lore. The movie still banks on the success of the first 2 movies, where it replays scenes and situations in their entirety but in the end feels very hollow. None of the actors carry their characters well, they are 1 dimensional and paper thin. When the plot is not driving the dialogue we are made to endure cringe worthy jokes and whinging nothings. Instead of killing SkyNet, this franchise should have been destroyed once James Cameroon left the helm.
"You are nothing but a relic from a deleted timeline."
Arnold's back! It's a remake but it feels new because they added some new elements and mixed up some old ones. But in the end, Terminator Genisys ends up being more of the same.
I like Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, she's got charm and brings a bit of comedy especially when interacting with Arnold. Not quite sold on Jai Courtney, his acting is a bit forced and the casting doesn't really fit as Kyle Reese. Arnold is the saving grace of this movie but he serves as a side character most of the time which is a shame.
Strongest part was the first act, it's one action scene after the other. The second act is where we focus on the characters and story and that's where it really struggles because as it turns out, it's all very generic and uninspired. The third act is back to the action but so much of it is stuff recycled from the previous movies.
The special effects are fine but they're definitely the weakest in the franchise so far. Lots of action in the first and third acts, favorites were the older Arnold vs. younger CGI Arnold fight, the bridge and the helicopter chase. The war action set pieces at the beginning looked exciting but we only see 10 seconds of them which is a shame. Weakest entry in the franchise but not as bad as what i'd heard.
At the beginning of the show it seemed like the average remake, copy and paste, then that swift turn of events peaked my attention and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, because I wanted to know everything they did differently. That was it though, that's the gimmick, the altering of events makes this movie work, otherwise it would probably have been just below average.
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would have.
7/10 for Pops.
Stupid title aside, this wasn't nearly as awful as all the reviews suggested. It's not a classic Terminator film, but it's also not that bad. It's a pretty competent sci-fi action film that doesn't take itself too seriously. And if you think of it as a soft reboot of the Terminator franchise into an alternate time line, as opposed to trying to fit into what's already canon, it makes it a lot better. The main four actors are all fine. J.K. Simmons was superfluous to the story and Matt Smith has literally a couple of minutes screen time total. Not sure why they even cast him in such a tiny role. At the end of the day, I had fun with this.
He's back...almost.
I had my doubts with Genisys ever since the title of the movie "Genisys", which wasn't such a great title and the fact that the teaser trailer for the movie gave away the biggest plot twist in the movie. I mean, the trailer showed way too much and spoiled the film for me. The other thing that made me less exciting for the movie is the fact that movie is saying that the first and second movie never happened and this is the true Terminator movie. Like, "f**k that" I thought. My hope for this movie for being decent slowly went down as every time I hear some news from the movie if it has something to do with the cast or the little plot rumors.
But after seeing the movie it wasn't all that terrible as I thought it was going to be, but it's not great.
Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as are favorite robot bad-ass and he brought he's one liners with him. Arnold is the most likable bad actor of all time and turned into an action hero icon. In this movie, he once again nails it as the fearless but likable Terminator. I can't imagine anyone else playing the Terminator but only Arnold, because it's the right role for him as Arnold can play a robot really well, and he's not even acting. Awesome work Arnold.
T-1000 is back in this movie but not for very long and it did feel out of place for T-1000 to be there. It like the film makers just threw him in there to remind you of T2, but I got to say that the run time of his screen time is the most enjoyable part of this movie. What the movie did well is making the T-1000 scary and dangerous again just like in T2. I mean T-1000 is the best villain in movie history and I'm happy they didn't screw the character up. Now after thinking about it and I did enjoy the T-1000 in the movie, but I have to admit the T-1000 didn't really need to be in this movie. He's screen time was very short and he wasn't very useful to the story; he was just throw there just to start the next action screen. If they just cut him out of the movie it wouldn't have made no difference at all and it wouldn't really effect the story. Now to those who haven't seen the movie and wondering why the T-1000 is in the movie well it's because I guesting he's been hunting down Sarah Conner maybe? However, in the movie you first see the T-1000 designed up as a police officer driving around the dark streets like most officers do when it's night time to protect the streets at night, but anywhere he comes across Kyle Reese as he steals a homeless mans clothes. Anyone remember in the original when Kyle was chase by that police officer in the opening well here it's changed, because Kyle knocks him over and ask what year is is and T-1000 attacks him just like that. OK here's the thing how did it know it's him? You could think they sent another one back in time to hunt both of them down, but Skynet doesn't know that Kyle Reese is the father of John Conner or even know what he looks. I mean if it's been waiting then how did it know that's the spot he's going to jumped off at? What if Kyle landed somewhere else? I know I went there and it may seem pointless to some but I seriously needed to get that out there somehow. Some people tell me to "just enjoy the movie and don't think about stuff like that", well that's what some lazy moviegoers say just because they can't think themselves.
The one last thing that I can say positive about this movie is the fact that it's much better than 'Terminator 3', but now I'm getting into the problems.
Now I got nothing against Jai Courtney as a person. I bet he's a nice guy in real life, but he is seriously not a good actor at all and him playing Kyle Reese was a huge miscast. At times I kept thinking he was a robot because of how robotic and wooden he's acting was. I really don't get why he's getting such big roles in big movies. The guy is not good at all.
Now another miscast was Emilia Clarke as Sarah Conner. She didn't do a terrible performance such as Jai Courtney, but all of her senses were quite cringe worthy and really awkward. There were scenes in this movie were Emilia almost did a good Sarah Conner, but those scenes don't really last long. She's good in Game of Thrones, just not here.
The story and the writing was pretty messy. I mean, this movie tries to improve things with the Terminator timeline by filling in the plot holes and the gaps, but it made things a lot worst and more confusing as this movie as more plot holes than the other Terminator movies. The movie is trying to redone the first and second movie by saying it never happened as the timeline as changed, but the real question is why change the first movie and the squeal? Leave those two movies alone. Why can't they do a ;Day of Future Past' on a film like 'Terminator 3'; I would have been fine with that and it would have been a sorry letter to the fans of last two movies, but changing 1&2? Nope!
The actions scenes in the movie were fine and entertaining enough, but it didn't really wow me that much. It's mostly quick cuts and some of the action has been shown too much in the trailer, so I wasn't all that trilled to see them as every clip and trailer showed most of the action scenes. The action isn't terrible, just decent.
There's scenes in this movie that were re-created from the 1984 Terminator movie and it didn't really feel right. It felt weird and not the good weird.
Oh and Matt smith is in the movie...for six minutes and that's it.
Overall rating: Terminator: Genisys has it's pros and it's cons. I say it's better than Terminator 3, but Terminator 1 & 2 still knocks this movie out of the park and will be a classic for years.
PS: James Cameron you lied!
Was very bad, i dont know why this movie is in terminator saga, but i give 5 by action but the rest of movie was bad.
If you watched Terminator and T2 and loved them, then watched T3 and thought it was okay but not great... This is the only other one you should watch.
More good bits than bad, and despite the terrible casting of another bad Kyle Reese and John Connor, not to mention Emilia Clarke not living up to Linda Hamilton in any guise - despite all this, it's actually quite a decent movie.
Terminator for the Marvel era is how I heard it described recently and I agree wholeheartedly.
I quite liked the time travel element and the explanations given worked for me.
6.5/10
Terminator: Genisys is a clever reimaging of James Cameron's sci-fi classic. A direct sequel to the original film, Resistance fighter Kyle Reese is sent back to 1984 to stop a cyborg that has been sent by a computer network called Skynet to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the Resistance; but the 1984 that Kyle arrives in has been altered and he finds that Sarah has been working with a Terminator to build a time machine to take them into the future to stop Skynet from being created. Director Alan Taylor does an incredible job at recreating the look of the original film and at staying faithful to the material. Additionally, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney and Jason Clarke all give good performances; particularly Emilia Clarke, whose depiction of Sarah Connor both homages the original character and takes her in a new and daring direction. Surprisingly fun, Terminator: Genisys resets the series and gives it new life.
Massively underated by the "critics", though I don't know why. It's not the best Sci-Fi movie ever but it's not that bad either! I felt it fit in well with the franchise with a twist on the original film.
this story is lame... please change the subject. we are tired of terminator repeating this story for 20 years! try something else! only a machine wants to kilk Sarah and John! this terminator has nothing more than previous ones! and also this was so complex with too many characters...
A fantastic way to renew the franchise. Usually I am not a fan of alternate timeline storyarcs, as it's usually done badly and just an attempt to restore some credibility to a failing franchise or dig themselves out of bad writing. But it really worked here. Finally meeting Johns father, seeing skynet born, and anthropomorphised (thanks to Matt Smith), and then destroying it before it became a threat (well seemingly anyway), all of this worked great. I really enjoyed the father daughter relationship between t-800 and Sarah Connor, it really just worked fantastically especially with the younger Emilia Clarke playing Sarah Connor. I enjoyed this movie over the other three entirely, I feel that the focus was the story this time and not just the ass kicking action, though all the terminator movies have a rich, and well established story.
Here is why I´m not a huge fan of re-boots. In the movie business It is the attempt to try to bring something that made money in the past to a new generation to cash in on it again by changing an existing story. One has to be willing to throw everything seen before out of the window and I always feel kind of betrayed. Not that the parts after "Judgement Day" where exeptional movies but they build a certain storyline.
You have to establish the characters you already know anew. It didn´t work for me here. Both, E. Clarke and Courtney, can not bring the strength and presense of Connor and Reese to the screen. The twist in the John Connor character was the obvious one they could make. It is nice seeing Arnold again.
Another thing that I find interesting about the whole Terminator movies. They always try to sell the message that the future is what you make of it. It´s your choices, the future isn´t written yet. Yet, Skynet finds ways to come back and avoid final defeat again and again. Dosn´t that rather implicate that your future is unavoidable? That, yes, you can make choices but in the end the outcome will be the same?
Simply seen in itself it is decent, typical of todays style of action movie. That´s where I base my rating.
Worthy of the name Terminator and nothing like Salvation with Christian Bale. The latter is a decent action flick while not a "true" Terminator movie and its only selling point was the name Terminator in the title and maybe Christian Bale on the poster..
This on the other hand is a good and modern continuation of Judgment Day (as this movie was said to connect to) with Schwarzenegger back in his perhaps most iconic role.
Liked it.
Alll be back...as long as it's not a too-mahh
I honestly expected this to be worse than it was. It had plenty of entertaining action and effects, which I enjoyed. But I could've gone without all of the one-liners. It was a solid movie.
Everyone is back, slightly different than before. The timeline is the same but different. A great action movie, enjoyable and open for another continuation should they decide to do so. It's maybe slightly worrying that Genesis/Cyberdyn/SkyNet have certain parallels to modern day developments; are we on this road to Judgement day
It was more true to the original terminators 1 & 2. It's great to see Arnold back in the role of terminator. The good pretty much stops there. They catered way to much to Arnold's aging appearance in the story line which I know was necessary but seems poorly done. The Plot jumps around so much between different character versions, time lines, paradoxes, that I got to were I didn't even care about the characters anymore. Why do I care if they succeeded or not, is this the timeline I am suppose to care about? Is this the version of the character I am suppose to sympathize with? The movie did great with the action but really hurt itself by trying to make an overly complex plot with to much depth. The movie would of been way better with a simplified plot and great one liners that the originals had. Also, Jason Clarke was just hideous playing his part. Didn't like him even when it was the good version of him When he was suppose to be a machine he says he doesn't feel pain, yet he is making all kinds of face expression when in pain or staining. Very bad acting on his part.
Surprisingly good movie. Having missed most spoilers beforehand I was definitely impressed by some twists and turns in the story.
Not convinced by the casting of all roles, but well enough overall. Matt Smith was a fun surprise.
the worst terminator ever :| !
Awsome but i really hope this is the last one with Arnold. :)
Another first installment in an intended trilogy AND tv series, crazy.
There is a lot of stuff I like, especially in the beginning. I loved Schwarzenegger vs. Schwarzenegger, I loved seeing scenes from The Terminator in a new jacket, the war against the machines has never looked so good, Judgment day itself looks great. John Connor becoming evil because of the Terminators was interesting (stupid they gave it away in trailers), but it's too chaotic for me and there is too much action going on instead of focussing on a better story.
Also not a fan of Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke as John Connor I'm not sure of but it was okay, Matt(hew??) Smitt needed more screentime, J.K. Simmons was fun. Emilia Clarke wasn't a bad Sarah Connor but it's hard to forget Linda Hamilton.
:heart::heart::heart::heart::heart: - I like the action but I felt the story letdown

Daenerys Targaryen and her great great great great great great grandfather Daemon Targaryen in the same movie!!!
The best one so far
Rewatching this in 2022, I can understand the bad review. The casting is kinda weird: John Clarke doesn't look like a battle-hardened leader John Connor despite the scars; Jai Courtney is too quippy, playful, and easily distressed/panicked as a soldier growing up in the midst of war Kyle Reese; and Emilia Clarke doesn't have the charisma as Sarah Connor, despite being depicted as being accustomed to armaments and combatant training. It's kinda jarring too seeing her easily adapting to 2017 for a person that lived in 1984.
Other than that, like the other reviewers have said, the story can't be treated as a standalone film due to "the past has changed" thing going on, but at the same time it plays out pretty much like a standalone, non-Terminator action film. Which is fine btw, since the action is quite good. It still tries to stay true thematically to the first film - the future is not set in stone - but I'm not sure, but the story, alongside the casting/performance, is not the film's strongest suite.
I gave this a 8 during my first watch, for the third now I'll say it 6.5 or 7 at best.
I enjoyed it. But would have been better without the constant whining by Kyle
Who ever did the casting for this movie deserves a slap on the face... with a chair.
It may be no T1 or T2, but this film IMO is a worthy addition to the Terminator franchise no matter what the critics thought. Sure, the repeating idea of going back in time to save Sarah is getting old but stop comparing it to one of the best Sci fi films of all time. There's no need, just relax and enjoy it for what it is. There are far, far worse big budget Sci fi films than this (looking at you Matrix 2 and 3)!!!
The great problem of this filme for me was make John Connor from savior to devil because Sknynet symbiosis on him. If was another T-Exterminator 1,5k or 2k instead the Sknynet Connor the movie won't be so hated. I bet.
An attractive Sarah Connor... that's new.
There's some good stuff here but the plot is bad and the acting isn't great.
First half of this film was great! I would have gave this an 8 but then John Connor turned up in 2017 giving it Charlie big potato.. Connor the enemy!?? Really? Can’t wait for Linda Hamilton’s return as Sarah Connor in the reboot.
It has some nice twists, but the price are a lot "Why?" and "How?", for which you'll receive no answers.
Not as bad as the critics say... But when compared against others in the franchise, this movie doesn't come close to stacking up. Poorly casted, glaring potholes, and I really didn't like how the messed around with the timeline. But it was nice to see Arnie back in the saddle with a few good Arnie lines.
Better than i thought it would be. Arnold is great of course and his injection of periodic dry "terminator humour" made it for me.
They should just stop after they messed up part 4. Part 4 should have continued right where part 3 left off with John learning to be a leader. This movie just made things worse by making John a bad guy and Sarah not even caring if she has to kill him.
In other timelines there are versions of this movie that are probably amazing. Sadly we exist in this timeline and the version we get is a poor continuation of the franchise, with a bland Jai Courtney and a convoluted plot. There should have been a Terminator at the cinema screenings saying "Come with me if you want to leave."
Loved this movie, it has has some great action scenes in it and of course the legend Arnold!
Only i found that this Sarah not that convincing (i know she would be younger in this movie)
(But my thoughts) with Lena Headey from the tv serie Terminator: the Sarah Connor chronicles
(this serie i freaking loved! Seriously if you are a Terminator fan you need to watch it)
it would have been perfect.
After all this time i am still hoping that there will come out with a season 3 or a mini serie of the tv serie.
Much closer in quality and feel of the first two in the series.
Really enjoyed Arnold reprising his role as the Terminator. Really good take on the series with a few plot twists that were enjoyable. Also a lot of great comedy and throwbacks which overall made me enjoy something new with a hint of nostalgia. I loved seeing the Terminator's fight and generally destroy things no normal person could.
Cine Paco image 4,75 / 5, sound 5/5 and 3D 4/5. I liked more than the film, 3D does not bring me much
I really enjoyed the movie. Much better than the previous 2 but does not exceed the first two. The cast was well chosen also.
(via Movie Blaze for WP) love it
Was less then i expected from the movie.
Surprisingly better than I expected; particularly considering the age of this franchise! Well done folks!
This movie is just a compilation of all the great scenes from the first 2 movies combined with Arnold Schwarzenegger throwing out one-liner after one-liner and making fun of how old he is nowadays. (a terminator with artritis? Hilarious. (NOT!)) The timeline doesn't make any sense if you try to piece it together with the original 2 movies in mind. The screenwriters seemed to realize that and threw in the alternative timeline as a cheap way out, but if you decide to go that way, basically anything goes.
Another thing that baffles me is how much worse the effects look when compared to the first films that were recorded almost 30 years ago. A movie with a budget like this one had should have jaw-dropping CGI but for some scenes that just isn't the case.
Anyway, a reasonable action flick that isn't as bad as Terminator 3 or Salvation but is definitely not as good as part 1 or 2. The series needs to take itself more seriously and stop relying on flashy CGI. After Judgment Day it shed it's cold killer theme and started going down some kind of friendly, joking cyborg path and that's the wrong way to go. Instead of giving the terminator a more human personality, they've made him into some weird kind of clown. Arnold's smile in the final scene says it all.
I saw this movie last month and I was really surprise. Such good actors, Emilia & Jai's chemistry is terrific. I went to the cinema and I was thinking that I wouldn't like these kind of movie, that Arnold was old for the movie, and he kind is.. But it doesn't matter because he is awesome and they made so many computer effects to show his past and in the fighting scene with the other 'him'.
We watched this movie in the cinema and we really loved it, in my opinion it's a mix of sci-fi, action and comedy, its a lot less serious then terminator 1 and 2 but that makes it all the more fun. Love'd to see Emilia Clarke is something else then GOT and she performed awsome as young Sarah Conner. Emilia, Arnold and Jai makes a pretty good combo. Classic!
Expect a lot of plotholes. I counted 4 in my head while watching it.. A tad disappointing... BUT still entertaining.
Having never seen the original movies, this felt like it had an empty storyline, and probably relief heavily on previous movies to fill those gaps.
The movie itself was decent, but nothing to blow my mind.
I liked the idea and where they go with it, better than 3 and 4
I'm a big fan of the terminator saga and i was pleasantly surprised by the film. Better than 3nd and 4th of course and a great inclusion to the series. I had my thoughts on Clarke playing Sarah Connor but she was really good
when I see the film??
This movie will be called Terminator: Genesis (2015)
Review by Simon MasseyVIP 11BlockedParent2015-07-06T20:29:01Z
By no means the terrible film that many critics suggest, this is a rather generic action film, that was unfortunately hugely spoiled by the marketing, but is still a lot of fun. The plot as a standalone film makes little sense and ties itself into knots trying to explain a timeline that was already confused enough. Perhaps future films may explain some of the key questions raised, but ultimately the story shown here should work on its own, especially given the nature of the central villain and his importance to the overall story arc of all the Terminator films. Indeed, there is an interesting core concept created here in the identify of the central villain of the film, but the potential is largely wasted after the reveal in favour of a slight variation of the T-1000. That said, there is certainly a lot of fun in seeing elements of the timeline only hinted at in previous films as well as the recreation of various scenarios from the original film. The action sequences are all largely well done, apart from a terrible helicopter chase near the end of the film. Surprisingly, given his 12 year absence, the best part of the film is seeing Schwarzenegger in his signature role and it his relationship with Clarke's Connor that form the strongest character moments, despite treading similar ground covered in Terminator 2. Whilst Emilia Clarke does pretty well as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney unfortunately is no Michael Biehn and his rather bland take on Kyle Reese makes it difficult to care about such a key character. Whether there will be any future films to take this story forward is uncertain - the biggest failing of all the Terminator sequels after Cameron's films is their efforts to continue a storyline that was essentially completed at the end of Terminator 2. But this film is a step up from the previous two sequels and there are hints that future films may explore other elements that don't simply rely on the Terminator as protector/killer.
