"What ever happened to Free Will?"
This is a fun movie. I had no idea it was a story written by Philip K. Dick, but that makes sense. If there was something I could change it would be so that we could dig into the Adjustment Bureau itself just a little more because it is such an interesting idea. Damon and Blunt are cute and charming together and makes sense why he would do anything for her.
20 mins in and I'm thinking that if the men in hats were bald it would be "Fringe", will see it out though...
Loooot a lot a contradictions within the script.
Why didn't Harry stop the bus using his powers instead of using them to spill David's coffee? Why do these angel guys keep running around helplessly like a bunch of losers? No flying, no teleporting, no angel motorbikes or something? They seem to have little to no abilities. Going through doors only thanks to their hats -which can and has been achieved by a human- looking exactly the same as a human, having human names etc...
One of the angels made it clear that he can read minds, ("pick a color, pick a number" scene) yet Harry says in another scene that they can't read people's minds, they can only see through their decisions and control them. They seem to have completely forgotten what they wrote on the script earlier.
In one scene where they're supposed to stop them from kissing, David's friend says his name just when he was about to kiss Elise, whereupon he kisses her only on the cheek and leaves. Why the fuck couldn't he kiss her on the lips before he left? Literally would have taken the same amount of time.
David's character has bugged me from the very beginning. He became a politician the way one becomes a footballer or something. People don't get into politics being inspired by their dad's faces when they take them to some place. That's just not how it works. He also keeps going after the woman who never attempts to reach out to him herself, which would have been easy for her since he's a public figure. Throughout the whole story it felt like it was just him who loved her and not vice versa, yet they presented it as "their incorrigible love".
Elise's character was also annoying and cliched. They made her that one girl who lights up your world with her funny wild spirit and always drunken-like attitude. David never knew her beyond that and they never seemed to form that strong of a bond worth fighting for, yet David is so convinced she's right for him even though ANGELS THEMSELVES tell him that she's not.
Why does destiny keep making them run into each other if the angels are the ones writing destinies? Why was he able to see her again on that one road and get out of the bus to go to her? It seems like it's in their destiny to meet, so what does that make of their actual destiny that was determined? What does that make of the movie's message, anyway? That you have to rebel against your destiny... so that you can reach your destiny? I don't know, the whole fiction felt deficient and poorly written.
This film has a surprisingly decent story line and was very entertaining and interesting to watch. The cast in this film turned out great performances. It felt fresh and original; a good concept. I really enjoyed this film.
He can change the world... As president of the USA... and she can... Be the greatest dancer ever, of course, because she's a woman. This is so, so bad.
This movie is atrocious.
My first impression of the film was a theological sci-fi thriller with a primary romance plot. These factors alone suggest a corny movie. What we actually get is naive, schlocky, sentimental nonsense. There's not a hint of craft, cleverness, or psychological realism in any moment of the film. The outline of the plot resembles something a toddler would invent. Given the cast, the film's utter artistic failure is thoroughly disappointing.
This is a story about two people trying to get together and forge a relationship against all odds. I confess I stopped watching halfway through because I couldn't get over a huge plot hole. Non-essential spoiler: Matt Damon's character is a public figure, so it would be dead simple for Emily Blunt's character to track him down, yet she doesn't even try.
This could be explained away in the movie's universe, yet the screenplay doesn't bother, choosing instead to forcefully pigeonhole the two characters into rigid gender roles of pursued and pursuer, despite such a passive role being completely out of character for Blunt's outgoing wedding-crasher! The dissonance was too much, so the movie gets a one for basic plot failure.
You'll either love it (like I did) or hate it
I got to see this movie, because it was recommended to me when I put on the sciene fiction filter and it also had a good rating.
Oh boy, was I disappointed. This movie isn't science fiction at all. Fiction at best, maybe. It has absolutely nothing, and I repeat nothing, to do with SCIENCE fiction. It is a fiction movie, a romance and if there was a main category to put it in, that would be esoteric.
Half way through the movie I realized that this film wasn't what I thought it was and tried to enjoy it nonetheless. Unfortunately, even as a romance this film didn't deliver. It absolutely doesn't deserve its rating, neither as a romance nor as an esoteric thriller. If you compare it romance-whise to City of Angels, which has a relatively similar setting, you'd immediately see the shortcomings of this film and that it cannot compare. 7.0 is too much, I'd give it a close to 6 rating. In words: "Slightly above average", and that is only because of the acting.
Also I want to say that it's just sad to see a movie like Gattaca compared to this. Really, really sad. It almost makes me cry. ;(
I knew Emily Blunt from several earlier movies but it was The Adjustment Bureau that made me become a huge fan of her. And she didn't disappoint ever since.
Seeing so polarized reviews, I've expected a much worse experience. The movie is a good mix of fiction, action and romance, though it drops the ball in the end a bit. I really liked the chemistry between the characters and, as I'm kinda a sucker for New York views, I enjoyed those too.
Very inspiring! Awesome.
Probably the most disappointing film i've seen this year. The whole premise was so fantastical as to be almost childish. It tried to display a level of intelligence that never really worked with the simplistic storytelling. I admit I like the chemistry between the two main characters, but you should, that is the crux of the film. It was supposed to be 'deep' in certain ways but in the end it was a group of people gifted with extraordinary powers chasing normal people - rather ineptly.
Great movie, a good mix of everything in it :)
I though this might be a good thriller from Matt Damon, but I had to wait an houre before anything happened at all. Way to much romantic scenes, and way to little thriller for my taste. IMDb score 4!!
7/10
I liked it. Emily blunt was amazing in this movie and Matt Damon to like he always is. Would have preferred seeing a little look in the future at the end, did he become president? Did she become one of the greatest choreographers? Story was fun, but would have loved to see more of it instead of a love story. But besides that still a fun movie that you watch 1 time.
So here's the thing about me. I'm kind of the movie doctor for my circle of family / friends. The film whisperer, if you will.
My sister came to visit for a couple days and asked me to pick a movie she might like, so I prescribed this one and she ate it up. And that made me feel good.
(But the three stars is for the acting and the chemistry I felt between Blunt and Damon.)
I too wish I could run around New York City with Emily Blunt.
A romantic movie with a very original screenplay.
Throughout the first half the tone of this film is difficult to get a handle on. Is it a thriller? Sci-fi? Rom-com?
The world hinges on their relationship and yes they have chemistry but it's not great, it's blah. We don't care. We're not invested.
Something about the style of the soundtrack could have been more dramatic.
Overall the film needed more intensity to bring out the weightiness of the subject matter.
Update: the more I think about this movie the worse it gets.
All of this has already been somewhere: destiny, door, this one love and this striving to believe that someone is directing our fate... But what about the movie? You can watch it.
Excellent concept - as is expected when the great Philip K Dick put pen to paper and the short story gets fleshed out.
I enjoyed it more on second watch.
I just felt there were too many location running scenes - given the keys to New York City, what director wouldn't film all the landmarks...? Well, I suppose...
Great concept, good execution, ran a little long for me.
7/10
It's an interesting concept for a decent movie.
I'm not going to lie, I thought this was an action film once I saw Jason Bourne and the other chick in the poster. I don't recall seeing this movie but I feel like I had seen it.
Even though it wasn't what I expected, it was still pretty good. Also, it was still more plausible than let's say the Matrix.
I love how Jason Bourne said the world was still a pretty shitty place despite their intervention and adjustment guy rebuttal with but it's still here.
The world isn't going any where... humans will go extinct before the world dies...so stop it :type_4:♀
The Adjustment Bureau is a smart and provocative film that both challenges and entertains. Adapted from a Philip K. Dick short story, a New York politician accidentally gets a glimpse behind the curtain at a mysterious group that is able to manipulate time and space. Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Terence Stamp, the film is especially well-cast. And, it explores some deep philosophical issues, including predestination and freewill. Additionally, Thomas Newman provides an eloquent score that matches the look and tone of the film. Full of tension and suspense, The Adjustment Bureau is a compelling and dramatic thriller that captures the spirit of Dick’s original work.
An excellent Philip K. Dick adaptation that comes off as neither too cerebral nor too wantonly action-heavy. Matt Damon slides into the role of a brash, combustible young politician in the mold of JFK, whose chance meeting with his dream girl sets off a chain reaction that alters his perception of the world at large. Shortly afterwards he stumbles across the delegates of a shadow agency, who freeze time and bend reality to tinker with the thoughts and feelings of the population, all in the name of a precise global timeline. Damon, naturally, is immune to their tricks and bolts from the scene.
As a science fiction twist on the cat and mouse game, it's a blast of fresh air with an admirable sense of restraint. In a perfect world these agents would do their jobs without being noticed at all, so their methods consist of a series of slick, downplayed visual tricks and slight tweaks to the natural order. That sensibility works for their own purposes, but also for the film's: the special effects are equally moderate, and as a result more believable. Damon and Emily Blunt click right away as a duo, so well in fact that it's no challenge at all to root for them from the get-go, and the agency itself is far from the black-and-white, good-versus-evil gang of naughty henchmen you might expect. A tense, creative adventure with perhaps a tad too much sentimentality, it's a raging, surprising, success.
Unexpected enjoyable with nice messages and great perfomance from Blunt 7.3/10!
The premise of the movie is interesting to say the least, it's too bad they squandered all this potential on a love story. The sense of urgency shown in the poster isn't conveyed in the movie at all and despite the characters acting like running bulls it just doesn't come over as intended making the movie, quite frankly, boring. This lack of excitement echoes throughout the whole movie making me care less and less about this "epic love" that equally doesn't come over as intended.
£And yes, his performance was disappointing as well.
This really was a neat little movie. Where it started out was light years from where it started.

No red dress whatsoever! The lies they spin.....Apart from this little letdown, it was pretty good!
why the angels have surnames
inspires you to face the challenges of life.10/10.Good film.
I've seen this before. I always say I love this movie but forgot why. Upon rewatch I realized because it's a love story disguised as a thriller. I honestly think this was doomed to fail because how could they promote it? This could have been sold as a Nicolas sparks moview and made way more money. It's just so unabashedly all about love conquering all. I loved it!
A beautiful love story and great movie
Awesome movie!! This is a very interesting perspective on things.
I would recommend watching it.
Very Poor Film - Way to far fetched storyline with hardly no action scenes! Spent most of the movie watching Matt Daemon running through doors! What a waste of 2 hours! I was glad when it ended!
Great story line, I did't know where it was heading but it didn't disappoint. I need to get myself one of those hats!
I had heard this movie was not as good as the trailer made it seem. The rumor mill was wrong. I really enjoyed The Adjustment Bureau.
Very enjoyable film, however I found it annoyingly biblical towards the end.
Gotta say I thought it was pretty good. My wife was on the fence, but admitted that she was expecting an evil government thriller.
I liked it. Not a movie ill watch again any time soon, but i though it was pretty decent.
The movie had a small religious undertone to it, we get small hints that the chairman represents God and that the agents represent Angels. Luckily that undertone is small enough not to ruin the entire movie.
i liked it. not my favorite of the year but
Didn't like the movie that much. Was expecting something more from the story. Just didnt deliver in my opinion.
This movie is good!!! I don't understand all the haters!!
While watching this I kept thinking Monsters Inc. And how much more fun that was then this nonsense.
Got my hopes up for this, yet I was severely disappointed. Should stay clear of Matt Damon! :(
Great movie! I was hoping it would be another thriller movie, but I was quite pleased with what it turned out to be.
Loved it.
Nearly always like these kind of 'mindfuck' movies
