Following the initial collection of 100 noirs, a further 900 noir films (or films with prominent noir elements) will steadily be added (in a fairly random manner). This list will contain the full 1000 films which are the 1,000 most cited noir films (according to TSPDT's research). Please note that this list has not been and will not be ranked.

From the revered classics of Akira Kurosawa, to the modern marvels of Takeshi Kitano, the films that have emerged from Japan represent a national cinema that has gained worldwide admiration and appreciation. The Directory of World Cinema: Japan provides an insight into the cinema of Japan through reviews of significant titles and case studies of leading directors, alongside explorations of the cultural and industrial origins of key genres. The directory aims to play a part in the distribution of academic output by building a forum for the study of film from a disciplined theoretical base.

This is in the form of an A-Z of reviews, longer essays and research resources. The cinematic lineage of samurai warriors, yakuza enforcers and atomic monsters are discussed in addition to the politically charged works of the Japanese New Wave, making this a truly comprehensive volume.

The list is based on the contents of the Book, sorted by chapters:

  • Film of the Year
  • Alternative Japan
  • Anime / Animation
  • Chambara / Samurai Cinema
  • Contemporary Blockbusters
  • Jidaigeki & Gendaigeki / Period & Contemporary
  • J-Horror / Japanese Horror
  • Kaiju Eiga / Monster Movies
  • Nuberu Bagu / The Japanese New Wave
  • Pinku Eiga / Pink Films
  • Yakuza / Gangster

30

Feature films directed by Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998)

The film "Those Who Make Tomorrow (1946)" is absent from this list, due to the fact that Kurosawa co-directed this particular movie against his will, owing to his contractual obligations with Toho studios at the time. It stands as the singular work in his oeuvre where he did not claim exclusive directorial credit. Consequently, this movie is generally not factored into the tally of his celebrated 30 films, although some filmographies do incorporate it.

The so-called golden age of Hollywood begins with advancements in film technology and also marks the creation of the Hay's Code. This was also the period when new genres of film emerged and further diverged into many sub genres. By the 1950s, heavy emphasis on spectacles and big-budget productions was also prominent. The period came to an end as the "New Wave" started.
[This is a series of lists listing films deemed important based on their technical, artistic, historical or cultural significance. This shall also serve as a good resource for film studies however it is extensively based on my own personal preferences.
