A decent look at what the party was. It's definitely tilted a bit in favor of the Panthers, though. They don't talk about how the party was communist from the beginning, and if you don't know that, you assume that the initial armament of the party members was simply an exercise of rights and not the beginnings of a government overthrow. Huey Newman was an active marxist before the party, as were many of the early members, and this doomed the party to surveillance by the government, as this was the policy at the time for active marxist organizations advocating government overthrow.
