The Bread, My Sweet 2001

Sure the movie plays out like one big Italian stereotype but it is neither offensive nor cheesy. In fact, Scott Baio isn't even the star of this. Rosemary Prinz steals the show in her film debut at the age of 70 as Bella. The former soap star turns in an outstanding and convincing performance as the adopted mother of 3 men who lease her bakery. I especially liked her bond with the oldest brother who brought her a breakfast pie every morning. His performance was somewhat Rainmanish at times but their relationship was touching. Baio did a good job with his character but his corporate world scenes were filmed a little over the top drama style and the scene breaks are edited like a made for TV movie but overall this is an enjoyable movie.

This is very different from the rom-com you expect based on the title and description. Really, the movie is more about loss and coming to terms with losing someone they love than anything else. There's some romance in there but to me it felt secondary and the chemistry between the characters was mediocre at best. Definitely not a light-hearted fun-filled movie if that's what you're expecting. And while its not bad, it could have been better.
