The Count of Monte Cristo 2002

I can never get enough watching this film. Superb.

I didn’t like it. It felt very cheesy and heavy handed. The story got changed substantially, which is, of course, understandable, but I don’t like the direction they went making it all about the rivalry between Dantès and Mondego, with the latter being degraded to a cheap Hollywood villain.

I did like the performances of Caviezel, Harris, and Guzmán. There are also some beautiful shots in this film.

A wonderful display of Alexandre Dumas's fantastic writing. Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce's great acting are brilliantly accompanied by superb cinematography, wonderful supporting cast, and a hauntingly appropriate score by Ed Shearmur.

9/10 - I heartily recommend this film.

"I'm a count, not a saint."

Many revenge stories get lost in the violence, but not this. This movie takes time showing how Edmond Dantes becomes the count and the end is worth the build up. Helps that Jim Caviezel does a great job of playing a noble character that wants justice, and Guy Pearce is very unlikable.

This was a very enjoyable movie, if altered from the original version to have a more Hollywood-ized ending. On first viewing I was a little upset to see that Dantes gets everything he wants: his foes ruined, reunited with his love, rich and living happily ever after.

The point of Dumas original story was that vengeance can consume you and motivate you (ex: Dantes escaping Chateau d'If) but even if you succeed and get your vengeance, it doesn't bring the happiness you think it will and eventually leaves you feeling empty. In the original story (and I recommend you see the Richard Chamberlain movie version from the 1970's if you're interested) Dantes gets his vengeance, keeps his wealth, but doesn't get the girl and now has to figure out what to do with his life.

Having said that, the duel in the field with the zooming camera at waist-high level in THIS movie was pretty awesome!

One of my most favorite movies. It honestly has everything to it from friendship to a masterful revenge. The scenery is beautiful as well. Definitely one of the best adaptations and it's sad it didn't do better at the box office.

I forgot how much I loved this movie. I haven't seen it in years and it is truly wonderful. Guy Pierce is not an actor I care for, but even he is good in this. I keep telling myself to read the book, maybe now I will.

For some reason I remembered the inmate/mentor being played by Anthony Hopkins. I clearly need to research this movie....lol
