The Curse of the Werewolf 1961

Damn fine updating of the classic Monster tale. Reed is great in the role, and following the whole life of this character makes it all the more tragic. Love the commentary on the mistreatment of the working class.

This is the first classic Hammer film I have ever seen. So I can't really compare it to the other ones. In the first few minutes, the movie feels a lot like a classic German DEFA production. The sets, the music, and the acting reminded me of movies like "King Thrushbeard". Later, however, the tone changes significantly, and not necessarily for the better. Unfortunately, the entire 90 minutes dragged on. Some characters spout a lot of religious nonsense, and the actual "curse" is rather banal overall. We hardly ever see the eponymous werewolf. Only in the last few minutes does the monster appear, and it's actually quite impressive. I already liked Oliver Reed's performance as the tragic main character before that. Still, after many boring minutes, the exciting finale was too little too late for me. I would rather recommend "The Wolf Man" from 1941 if you really want to see an old werewolf movie.
