Reminded me of "Broken Blossoms" and "Port of Shadows" in its brilliant use of cinematography to heighten the atmospheric seediness of life at the ports. This is a dirty, hardscrabble movie that oozes beauty in every frame. It's sad to see the silent medium crescendoing before a rapid onset demise, because it feels like the directors in the last couple years really started to come into their own.
Sternberg at his best. Silent film at its best. Moves scene after scene to its sweet ending. A product of a different age. George Bancroft dominates every scene but supporting cast fantastic. A wonderful surprise.
