I thought at first this was going to be another "follow the item" movie like Winchester '73 or The Red Violin, but Ophuls is doing something more interesting here. The titular earrings find their way again and again to Madame, but each time they carry a different emotional weight and fulfill a different function. The moving pieces are fascinating and tragic to watch, and Ophuls' direction amplifies the melodrama in a lovely way.
