The East 2013

I have mixed feelings about this movie: I was utterly impressed by some things but totally disappointed and actually rather annoyed by others. Rating it was a tough one. The theme is awesome, on point and up to date with the current problems in our society, so much that in the first half you definitely route for The East despite the aggressive approach. Also, I've read about the meaning of the title and it's so clever you wish the movie was up to the task.

In the second half they ruined everything! Most of the anarchists turn out to be rich people who are doing everything for personal reasons and family issues rather than for believing in the cause, the protagonist (who is a woman for once, points for that!) is irritating AF and totally looks like she makes decisions at random and by the way, what's with the affaire?! Other than adding drama to the last scene it feels pointless. In the end the best thing about The East is Toby Kebbell's character, the only one who doesn't feel one dimensional and that has a real purpose from beginning to end.

With Paige and Skarsgard finally out of the way (both not good this time around) I would like to see how Brit takes over the fight. But the movie is over at that point.

A brilliantly written script performed well. Ever since I discovered the writing partnership of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (first with the OA TV series), I've been tracking down their works and enjoying their multifaceted storytelling. Even to just discover Brit Marling's acting has been a gift, so, of course, THE EAST has been another double pleasure. The ensemble cast in this was so strong (for me, Ellen Page and Julia Ormond were an added bonus). I give this film an 8 (great) out of 10 and look forward to continuing my quest for this duos creations. [EcoThriller]

Plays like a big budget variation of "Sound of My Voice". It had some cool ideas but it doesn't feel like they're consistent. They can just drop the whole eco act once it's time for an "action" segment.
