Kinda laughable at times with the serious stares, the overdramatization and the dad music. Denzel Washington is a badass though and it's quite entertaining watching him kicking the shit out of people in the coolest most brutal ways. The kills are fabulous and creative. There's no over-the-top action set piece or car chases but it compensates with more restrained hand-to-hand action sequences.
Denzel was good overall, his character is kinda interesting but I wish he had more dialogue and interactions with others because we hardly know him. But maybe it just reflects the character, he's closed off. Chloë Grace Moretz did not fit in this movie. Anytime she was there I was just disturbed by her presence. Something was off. Her costume and makeup was horrible for starters. The villain was cool in the first two acts but he didn't offer much in the third act.
The film almost lost me at the beginning (with Chloë Grace Moretz and the restaurant stuff) it was just so damn slow and quiet. Way too long of a runtime for what this is also. Loved the third act in the superstore. Ok ending. It's a decent action thriller overall but not one i'd revisit.
That explosion scene! Damn!
This movie is about a black chuck norris. U definitely must see it :)
The name Denzel Washington is one of those names that is capable to take any one to the movies, without even knowing what we have to expect from the film. An actor with enough reputation, he already made major roles throughout his career, has won two Oscars and like it or not "a name" greatly influences the expectation that we have about what we want to see. One of Denzel Washington's Oscars he won with the film Training Day made exactly with the same director of this The Equalizer, Antoine Fuqua. What happens sometimes is that good names can not save a film. Unfortunately The Equalizer is an example of that.
Robert has a past that no one knows. He works in a department store of building materials in Boston, apparently has a very quiet life and suffers from insomnia. To try to occupy his time, he reads and many times during the night he goes to a coffee shop opened 24 hours a day. As a frequent visitor of the place, there he knows Teri, a teenage prostitute and the two end up creating a special bond. Robert quickly realizes that Teri belongs to some kind of human trafficking mafia and ends up getting involved with the Russian Mafia bringing to him many problems that he could not predict.
The biggest problem of the story is that we have seen this type of film over and over again, with the same clichés and quite ordinary dialogues. The character development is not done properly leaving many things left unexplained, things that may be important to the audience.
At the beginning of the film we think that we're about to watch a film of a deep, dark atmosphere that will respect all the characters feelings, but ultimately this is no more than a mere action film where the important scenes are all the beating scenes (which by the way are very well choreographed) but with lots of failures along the plot and wasting time with scenes that turn out to be irrelevant, rushing many that could have been better explored. It would have been ideal to combine the two things, a good plot and lots of action but the film chooses the path only in the entertainment style of "One Man Army".
Denzel Washington gives a very solid performance, normally an actor is that despite doing a lot this kind of roles lately, knows how to make them decently. I think he is starting to follow Liam Neeson's path in role choices and that is a shame. I kinda feel sorry for both because they are good actors and I would love to see them do those striking roles that we had seen them do before. The talented and young actress Chloë Grace Moretz is also very good as expected but she only has very little screen time, and her character is the one that will lead to the entire development of the main plot of the film, although is not given proper development and importance to her.
The Equalizer turns out to be a disappointment for those who could wait for something less commercial and deeper, but I know that will surely appeal to many especially to all the lovers of action flicks with big fight scenes.
Lemme alone!!! I just wanna work peacefully and mind my business...Pew pew pew aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhh I'm in toooo deep ppphhhffrrrrttt
I remember watching this when it came out and not being very impressed or entertained. I was excited to rewatch it (and the second one) in light of the 3rd one coming out. Plus I must have been in a bad mood or something because there's no way a big budget action movie with good ole Denzel in the lead could suck? Unfortunately, it's just as stupid and bad the second time around...
We all knew on some level that Denzel Washington was a badass. The Equalizer was just the movie that hammered it in. That, and the fact that Home Depot can be a dangerous place at night...especially if you got evil intentions.
The story is the standard revenge(ish) affair, but Denzel Washington makes it much better. Probably a bit better than it deserved to be, but who cares. It's exciting, the pacing is almost perfect, and the music and cinematography borders on brilliant.
I tend to like movies with Denzel Washington quite a lot, so my rating will probably be rather high compared to others. Though...Don't make that dissuade you from checking the Equalizer out. It's really a good movie...trust me.
Where does McCall the Equalizer rank with all the other super secret agents out there? How does he compare with the likes of "John Wick", "Taken", or "Kingsmen"?
Denzel Washington is cool. There is just no way around it. His humble demeanor and the way he shows no rage adds to his character. He's got a license to kill, but regrets his actions. But those bad guys, they're just so...bad. He has no choice. McCall knows it. And I know it too because the bad guys have lots of blue tattoos of skulls and demons and stuff.
The secret agent genre is flourishing but I think more accurately, the geriatric secret agent genre is growing. It's like there's a Senior Secret Agent tour if you're 50 or older.
Denzel Washington plays a hardware store assistant with a murky past, who has a chance encounter with a girl in a diner (Chloe Grace Moretz). They hit it off as friends, but it soon becomes clear she has connections to the Russian mob. When she is hospitalized, Denzel sees red and goes on a rampage to take those motherfuckers down.
The Equalizer has a very simple take on the world - Denzel can and will stop the bad guys, and no good guys get hurt in the process. It’s pure fantasy; the notion that one man with the right skills and the right intentions can stop the entire Russian mafia in their tracks is ridiculous, but it’s all in the way you tell it.
Fuqua clearly had a unique vision for this film. It has a neo-noir aesthetic combined with hyper-realistic visuals and an eye for a great shot. It’s like Nighthawks at the Diner crossed with Watchmen. As with all great Film Noir, shadows, smoke and street lights are almost like an extra character in the film.
The dialogue is clunky, especially when it tries to spoon-feed us the ‘meaning’ behind it all. It’s a shame because the simplicity of the story is appealing, as well as the focus on visuals rather than trying to philosophise for no reason. The final sequence also lets the film down, shifting the tone towards Home Alone more than a gritty thriller.
Still, the great direction and performances make for a surprisingly effective film. Mindless escapism perhaps, but The Equalizer is far from mindless film-making.

A man who refuses to be confined to a senior citizens' home goes on a rampage!
A film for DIY enthusiasts.
A one-vs-all action movie, where Denzel Washington goes against russian gangsters in order to help a girl.
The action is good, but don't expect it to be realistic.
Firstly, to fully enjoy this film you have to suspend your disbelief. It seems so obvious to say this in a review but the amount of other reviews that go so bent out of shape about the realism of a single man taking on…well everyone, and the types of weapons used and so on is, as usual, quite high. I admit I often can get tangled up in the silliness of film-making but if you read the synopsis of this film you know what is going to happen before you even press ‘play’.
Overall the film treats you as an adult. People get killed in rather painful ways and with blood. The ‘hero’, Robert McCall’ isn’t indestructible and gets hurt, not much to be fair, but he does struggle fighting against a bigger man.
In truth the film is greater than the sum of its parts with director Antoine Fuqua and Chloe Grace Moretz adding to this but the jewel in the crown is magnetic, charismatic Denzel Washington, without him this film is average, with him it is great.
The slow-down ‘eye-of-the-tiger’ scenes that start the action scenes are well filmed and a clever method of showing what is in essence fifteen or sixteen seconds of violent action, although they are too reminiscent of the method used in the Sherlock Holmes franchise.
The film has flaws that stick in the craw, for instance in the final scenes the black-hats go from ruthless we don’t care about anything killers to bumbling fools who fall into simple traps even though they know a killing-machine is out to get them and Moretz’s prostitute is a typical Hollywood ‘tart with a heart’ and is too pretty and too nice to be authentic but I guess if she was realistic this would destroy any empathy the audience might feel. Also Marton Csokas’ evil enforcer is far too pantomime-like to be menacing in my eyes and his accent was slightly distracting.
The actual premise of a one-man army who has retired and then is forced back to his old ways to dish out violent and instant justice is not new or even new to recent cinema history.
John Wick, instantly springs to mind as an equally violent and visceral film in this category but like John Wick, The Equalizer at least tries to treat the violence as having some consequence, as in you are going to get very badly hurt, there is going to a lot of blood and it will not be clean and clinical.
None of these type of films ever deal with the aftermath or consequences of a three figure body count in just one small area of the USA but to be honest this not what they are about. They are not realistic takes on organised crime, special operations operatives or the grey area of vigilantism but neither have they presented themselves as such. You are meant to watch some really bad people getting some unpleasant vengeance handed out to them like you sometimes wish might happen in real life. I was happy with this before I started to watch and consequently the film made sense to me.
There are other films and shows that ask different questions of the same subject and if I were watching one of those then the targets would be different. It is a simple equation that so many people seem to miss on viewing a film.
Overall though, if you don’t take this too seriously and just sit back and watch Denzel Washington play an interesting killer, who despite his murderous tendencies you might actually like to know, then you should enjoy yourself. Just try to relax into it.

I did like the first half of the movie. but cummon, the Home Depot thing was rather silly. Using Home Depot tools to one by one kill the inept bag guys.... Why didn't he just pick up one of the bad guy's gun and kill them that way? Sorry, I'm not a fan of silly super hero battles in a movie that is otherwise serious.
Greatest movies from the great actor
The story is very seen. not bring anything new
Teddy was a good villain. Marton Csokas is a good actor, though his character in this movie compared to his character as Quinn in Into the Badlands, I like(d) Quinn more. Maybe it's because of the setting in the latter which makes me like him as Quinn more, who knows. Nevertheless, I liked him in this movie, I liked his character, Teddy, and I liked Denzel Washington's acting as Robert along with the character himself. I'm going to watch The Equalizer 2 soon and I hope it's just as good, if not better than this one.
First half of movie is good and the rest of the movie is bullshit. Sucks
Too predictable movie. Routine story. I watched this movie for Washington, but disappointed a little.
One of thee best movies I've ever watched for the Great Denzel Washington.
Fairly watchable, but equally forgettable thriller that coasts on the Washington's screen presence and natural charisma. Even he seems to be phoning it in a little, offering a character that is all to similar to other recent roles, such as "Man on Fire." Like Liam Neeson, he seems content to star in run-of-the-mill action films like this that may potentially start a franchise, but whilst the film suggests future entries, there is little here to suggest they will be worthwhile.
Finally, after dozens of CGI movies someone came up with a really good straight forward action movie. Yes, it has all the clichés, it´s predictable but, man, Denzel is bad a** in this.
This is a cracking movie, Denzel is outstanding and Antoine Fuqua direction is fantastic, some brilliant set pieces, would be hard to see anyone not enjoying this film
Denzel at his best!!!! enjoyed it very much :D
Not bad :)
The Equalizer is a must-watch action movie that will leave you thoroughly entertained. Denzel Washington gives an outstanding performance as Robert McCall, a former CIA operative who uses his skills to help those in need. The action scenes are top-notch, with Washington's character executing moves with incredible precision. I particularly enjoyed the creative ways in which he took down his enemies, adding an element of surprise to each fight sequence. Washington's acting is impressive, and he portrays McCall's complex personality with ease, bringing depth to the character beyond just his physical abilities.
OK, essentially a one man army against the Russian mob. Super powerish kinda. Never sure he can't predict the future while he counts down seconds for no apparent reason. Was entertaining but that was it.
A great movie. I loved the equalizer series and besides the name is has little to do with that. Nevertheless a great movie. Denzel at his best.
Robert McCall: Your heart's beating three times the normal rate because you're losing so much blood. About 30 seconds, your body's gonna shut down... and you're gonna suffocate. Alina, the girl you beat half to death, her life will go on. Yours is gonna end right here, on this funky floor... over $9,800. You should have taken the money.
Slavi: Who are you?
Robert McCall: 26 one-thousand... 27 one-thousand... 28 one-thousand... I'm sorry.
8.0 Since there are very bad scenes, but Denzel Washington, as usual, can make any work a success.
The Equalizer" is a compelling and entertaining film. Denzel Washington delivers a powerhouse performance, elevating the familiar vigilante narrative with his signature intensity and charisma. The action sequences are exhilarating, and the film delves into interesting themes about justice and redemption.
It has a solid foundation, but when realizing John Wick came out the same year, this is quite inferior to John Wick. The final scene in Home Depot was pretty cool. I liked certain scenes where Denzel is torturing the villians with mind games. First half of the film does drag and it feels like a fairly generic story.
Greetings, my fellow frosty travelers of the cinematic realm! I am Kiba Snowpaw, the alpha Ice Wolf from the frozen world of HowlStrom, and I'm here to share my exhilarating review of the 2014 action thriller, "The Equalizer." So grab your furry coats and let's dive into this frosty adventure!
Basic Plot Summary: The Ice-Cold Vigilante
In the icy heart of Boston, we meet Robert McCall, portrayed by the legendary Denzel Washington. McCall may seem like an ordinary man, but beneath his unassuming facade lies a past shrouded in mystery. When he crosses paths with Teri, a young girl ensnared by brutal Russian gangsters, his dormant sense of justice awakens like a winter storm. Armed with hidden skills, McCall emerges from his self-imposed exile to mete out vengeance against those who harm the vulnerable. He becomes "The Equalizer," the guardian of justice for those with nowhere else to turn.
Analysis/Evaluation: A Snowstorm of Brilliance
"The Equalizer" is a breathtaking adaptation of the classic vigilante theme. Unlike other bombastic action spectacles, this film brings a gritty and grounded approach to the genre. The dynamic duo of Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua creates an enchanting synergy that sets this movie apart.
Characters: The Ice and the Flame
Denzel Washington's portrayal of McCall is nothing short of captivating. McCall's enigmatic persona, initially closed off, adds layers of intrigue. His choice to avoid guns in favor of creative combat sequences offers a refreshing twist to the classic vigilante archetype. Chloë Grace Moretz, though having limited screen time, shines as Teri, leaving an indelible mark on the story. The villain, while compelling in the first acts, fades somewhat in the final act.
Structure: A Blizzard of Emotions
The film's pacing, much like a snowstorm, begins slowly, setting the stage for a tale of deep emotion and dark atmosphere. As the narrative unfolds, we are treated to well-choreographed action sequences that eschew over-the-top set pieces and car chases in favor of captivating hand-to-hand combat.
Impact: An Avalanche of Thrills
"The Equalizer" leaves a profound impact. It subverts the conventional action movie formula, diving into the psyche of its characters. This creates a resonating connection with the audience that lingers long after the credits roll.
Hook and Thesis: An Arctic Vigilante's Tale
The hook of "The Equalizer" lies in the timeless theme of an individual taking on the forces of evil. Its thesis, however, asserts that even in the coldest of circumstances, one can find warmth in the pursuit of justice.
Praise and Critique: A Frosty Masterpiece
While the film may occasionally tread into overdramatization, the brilliance of Denzel Washington's performance and the creativity of the action sequences keep audiences engaged. The kills are executed with fabulous ingenuity, compensating for the absence of overblown action set pieces.
Evaluation: A Snowy Triumph
"The Equalizer" is a testament to the power of storytelling and character development within the action genre. It defies convention and stands as a shining example of how emotion and depth can elevate an action thriller.
Comparison and Conclusion: A Frosty Gem
In a vast tundra of action films, "The Equalizer" is a rare and precious gem—a film that combines breathtaking action with profound character exploration. As I bid farewell to this chilling adventure, I can only hope for more cinematic experiences as exceptional as this one.
Stay frosty, my friends, and may your cinematic journeys be as exhilarating as a winter storm on the plains of HowlStrom.
The Equalizer is one of those franchises where I found the first movie to be a bit meh, and then the second and third instalments to be progressively awesome. My recommendation is to use the first movie as an opportunity to familiarise yourself with Robert McCall and his quirks, such as timing activities using his Suunto wristwatch. Him and that watch will take you into the next level in The Equalizer 2 and 3.
I've been hearing good things about The Equalizer 3, so I figured I'd go back and do a re-watch of the original (and the 2nd, which I never got around to) before going to see the third. I had previously scored this as a 7/10, but that was almost a decade ago and long before I was writing reviews, so I didn't really have much of a recollection of what I liked and didn't like.
Things get off to a slow start. I think it's an inherent downside of the "badass comes out of retirement" schtick that we've seen with things like John Wick and Nobody. In order to make the comeback feel impactful, we have to spend some time seeing our badass in his retired life, which isn't always compelling. Somehow that phase of this film feels simultaneously rushed and too long. Rushed because they are trying to get through a lot of set-up very quickly, and too long because waiting 30 minutes to hit the first action sequence in an action movie seems less than ideal. At that point I was a bit concerned that the old me was generous in his scoring and that I was in for a slog. Luckily, things improve as the plot accelerates. The biggest source of improvement was the introduction of Marton Csokas as the central villain. I didn't recognize him from anything else, but I'll have to keep my eye out, because he nailed this role as the sociopathic Russian fixer. The cat and mouse between he and Denzel carries the film, with their one on one dialogue scenes being standouts.
As far as the action itself goes, it's a mixed bag. The slow motion planning stage certainly has grown stale over the years and I've never loved overly convenient and surprisingly effective trap setting a la Home Alone (really detracted from the Skyfall finale for me), but it's all effective enough. I did feel like Denzel's side quests (cop extortion & cashier holdup/ring return) felt a little shoehorned in and coincidental, but I suppose he needed something to do while Teddy was playing detective. I'd also generally praise the dialogue and of course Denzel has a signature style that is never unappreciated. Overall, I'll stick with my original 7/10 and am excited to check out 2 & 3.
They didn’t have to go that hard with that explosion but I’m glad they did
Far-fetched? Of course...but it's a movie, and it was fun to disengage my brain and just sit back and watch the good guy win. Denzel Washington is always good and this movie was no different.
[TVE 1] Denzel Washington's popcorn stage offered some titles that have ended up occupying a notable position in the action genre. Antoine Fuqua has never been a particularly subtle director, but he is preferable in this type of absurd stories in which violence is justified as a vehicle for redemption for a protagonist who cannot isolate himself from it. Without giving up his usual discourse on forgiveness and salvation, Washington is here a kind of redeemer who punishes evil represented by Russian mobsters using violence, although the final sequence is less forceful than it pretends to be.
He looks nothing like Edward Woodward. Omg another bad remake of a great original series.
Denzel Washington saves the day.
There's nothing I'd consider special about 'The Equalizer', though thanks to a typically stellar performance from lead Washington I still had a fun time watching this 2014 release. It's a great showing from Denzel, not that that is a surprise given he is - alongside Leonardo DiCaprio - my favourite actor.
Otherwise, it's a pretty standard vigilante action flick which probably goes on for slightly too long and features some forgettable, if solid, support cast/characters, the latter is especially true for the rather plain villains. The music is also standard, though does improve towards the end with the final score and end credit soundtrack.
All in all, a worthwhile watch thanks to Denzel. I'm hoping the sequel, whilst still featuring a top lead performance, is more of a well rounded effort - I guess I'll soon see!
Watched the movie just now ..great movie and some classy action scenes ..loved it
Needlessly slow but if Denzel kicking ass with a stern expression is your thing..
Allowing Instagram to Decide What I Watch While in Isolation
Day 5:
Just one in a long line of 'old man get's revenge' movies. Honestly The Equalizer offers slightly more than most films in it's oddly specific genre with a great lead performance from Denzel Washington and a competent director behind the camera (Training Day's Antoine Fuqua).
If you tend to like gritty dramas with bursts of graphic violence then this is truly better than most of the competition but if that's not your thing then you probably won't be won over by this.
I was going to say that this was your typical cheap Hollywood action flick, but thinking it over - it’s actually more like a cheap Bollywood action flick!
If that’s your kind of thing, this movie’s got it all:
The played out Russian/Eastern European bad guy that’s got some character but disrespects women. Denzel Washington as a one man army walking away from shit he’s just blown up, ripping through the bad guys like they’re storm troopers, and still has enough of a moral compass to save random women and kittens from trees. And a girl.. whose sole purpose is to give Denzel an excuse to blow shit up and walk away from it.
Honestly, this could’ve been a bit better if any effort were put into the story. A fun action movie never hurt anyone, but at least you know what you’re getting going into a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. This pretends to be a serious movie and then it all goes South very soon. If M. Knight Shyamalan and Jay Chandrasekhar got together and decided to make a movie, it would be similar to this.
Great atmosphere and great action scenes i enjoyed it till the last minute. 7.8/10
Very less action scene. Too slow for me.
Love Denzel In Any Movie But This Was Awesome
The movie was action packed and I love when the good guy always win. The character don't talk much but you can only pull that off if you are a good actor. The young actress I hear she is 17 did an amazing job to play that part. Denzel no words you still got the box office power. Never seen the Equalizer series at all so my opinion is from the movie only. Sequel is wide open lets have more this year.
Hope to see more. Love It.
Ps. Possibly the worse part of the movie was there was not enough Chloë Grace Moretz whose role in the movie is no more than a gloried cameo.
What an awesome movie! I was entertained so much! Denzel Washington is such a great actor! Good performance delivered by all the crew.
A decent action movie that feels a little too familiar but is well made. Denzel is great and carries the movie. The story is so-so and not that important. The action scenes were great, I wish there were more of them. The first half of the movie does drag a bit and the movie is a little too long. Overall it's a good action movie that is worth a watch just to see the hardware store scene.
Didn't expect much but liked it alot. Even though there are tons of clichés ([spoilers]foremost the lawless eastern European monsters / gangsters against the righteous US one man equalizer [/spoilers] ;-)), it is a fun watch that I can recommend to all action fans!
Good movie, very intense keeps you wanting more, but could have used more Chloë Grace Moretz.
You can laugh at Chuck Norris and McGyver.
Better than I thought it would be. I grew up watching The Equalizer TV shows back in the 1980s with Edward Woodward as Robert McCall and Denzel did a very good job in this movie.
John W. Creazy dont die yet
This film is a superbly acted, exciting and violent ride! In the pursuit of justice, there will be blood. But this time, you'll be rooting for the good guy, and I loved every minute of it!
Great action flick...may lack some in character development, but delivers on big fight scenes. Recommended!!!
I love these types of movies. It was overall great movie, but maybe a bit too predictable.
Good evening entertainment! Nice action scenes with some interesting camera settings.
At the beginning i thought i would rate this movie with 8, but at the end i rated 7 because the plot becomes very predictable from a certain point.
I dont rate 6 because i like the subplot and that the maincharacter is mysterios until the end.
I didn't like the movie so much, but I can not miss a movie with Denzel.
Despite of being the common movie about one badass man (like every other movies of this type) I have to say that I enjoyed it, have really good fight scenes and I like the fact that there was no any between Bob and the bad guy. Too bad it end up being just that, an action movie, I actually was expecting something more deep and dark.
Pretty cliche story about an ex-CIA operative who get pulled back into his old violent ways after the ones he cares about get threatened by some serious criminals. There's nothing special about this movie or the story, but at least Denzel Washington does what he does best and keeps it enjoyable enough to keep watching.
Action movie where Denzel is the maximum star, it makes me sad how little Moretz appears, but for fans of action movies of the 80s liked it
Few people in cinema. It was good, shots, action, Denzel fills the screen. The bad people Should retire when they could
OK, this movie was a surprise and good one too.
One of the best performance from Denzel Washington.
It a some kind quite film until the action started, but then it still quite with a lot of hard violence.
This movie is on my rewatch list.
great movie, It feels like training day.. I mean.. little bit closer ;)
Hmmm. What can I say. MacGyver meets Equalizer. I was disappointed with this.
The first hour is slow moving, there's something building. When that something comes, bleh.
Home Depot will do good with sales for products such as hammer malls, barbed wire, SKIL drills (notice the KIL in the name), maybe even sand to absorb the blood. Do they sell corkscrews?
My favourite and overly dramatic part is the pump-action(!) cordless, pneumatic or electric nail gun (that's what The Equalizer is holding in the poster btw). I'm surprised Washington didn't utter the line, "nailed ya". And what was up with the arena rock music? I was ready for Judas Priest to come out on aisle 6.
'2 Guns' and 'Safe House' were much, much better action shows, with Safe House the better of the last two action oriented movies with Denzel.
Nothing special to report. I just didn't care for this with someone of Washington's caliber. If it was Richard Dean Anderson, now this would be a different kind of review.
I gave this a Fair rating as there were some parts I enjoyed, but none of those parts were that good or exciting enough to make me rate higher and come away satisfied. Will this style of movie become a franchise for Denzel, à la Liam Neeson. ? Time will tell.
Later, I'm off to Lowe's.

Such an awesome adaptation. It's a great vigilante film that's gritty and feels more down to earth than some other big action spectacles. Denzel and Fuqua are a beautiful pairing. Also found it interesting that the character went out of his way to not use guns. It's appreciated, as it gives him an extra layer and makes for more creative sequences.
