You will find the movie is odd but you'll love it. A cinematic perfection i must say, every frame is a piece of art. Great acting from the terrific casts.
Well now this film was just charming as heck.
What a majestic piece of art. Loved every single strangely visually satisfying to watch frame of it. Every shot is calculated down to the centimeter. Worthy all of the Oscars it's won and was nominated for.
What the hell movie were these people watching, because I thought it was mediocre
Quirky, original, and visually stunning! All the characters brought a fantastic energy to the screen!
Enjoyed every moment of this piece of art. Picture was taken up to the centimetres. It will always stay in my mind and heart. Wow.
Meh. The movie is indeed very beaultiful, but the plot is just awful. Very forgettable.
Incredibly funny and entertaining movie. Absolutely awesome.
I am not a fan of this movie, like said in another comment Wes Anderson is a very peculiar and original director, if you like his other stuff you will like this. This is on par with the other movies he has made.
Delightfully shot, the keen humor and excellent writing makes for a stylish and well-rounded emotional film.
I like the movie. Unfortunelly for me at the end of the story i felt that the real story hadn't even began, but i guess i was expecting something else when i started watching the movie. I think the story is average. The colors and camera top notch, loved everything, just inspiring!
At the end, im happy with this movie :)
This film is nothing less than heaven. I'm madly in love with it
Best movie I've seen in 17 years. As Edward Norton states in the making of, Gustave is the best character Wes Anderson has ever written. And Fiennes plays Gustave perfectly. I did laugh out loud at the resolution of the cliff face-off, perhaps laughing more at my surprised reaction than the resolution itself. This film is destined to become a cult classic much in the way the Coen's Big Lebowski did, with its unique gallery of characters, wicked humour and super-meticulous attention to detail (Wes wrote all the articles in the newspapers seen in the film).
this is a perfect movie indeed. so beautiful!
Loved it, visually its very well worked and a sensitive sense of humor
This is a must watch movie
"Did he just throw my cat out the window?"
A visual masterpiece to say the least, every second deserves it's own frame on a wall. Loved the adventure, colorful diverse characters, great interactions, phenomenal cast, amazing score, brilliant dialogue, unique style and the color palette is magnifique. Insane set design, I feel like Anderson went around the entire set with a magnifying glass to make it look perfect. Everything is so neat and symmetric. The humor worked for me this time around a lot of the physical and verbal comedy was effective, compared to the other Anderson movies i've seen (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums) which didn't get a single laugh out of me. I believe it had the intention of making the viewer emotional in the end but that didn't work on me unfortunately. If I had to criticise it on something it's definitely the story, very simple on paper and I don't know, something feels off once the movie finishes. I couldn't get enough of Willem Dafoe and Jeff Goldblum, a comedic duo that I would have taken a solo movie on. They made some of my favorite moments of the movie for sure.
Can I book a room, please?!
the acting was great
& the cinematography + screenplay, set design etc was Beautiful
This film was odd in that (for me) it became less enjoyable as it went along. The premise was great and it started out with great promise. After about 40 minutes it started to fizzle. After 80 minutes I was looking at the clock. I gave it a little bit of a bump on the rating because of the quality of the acting.
Great movie!!! Will surely become a cult classic.
best film of the year, hysterical
This movie is Fantastic!! One of my favorite movies.
I see that Wes Anderson's developed so well as a director that he can still maintain a huge audience for his films, and with the attention to detail he has, I believe he deserves all of the attention.
By now, it's apparent that he has a great grasp of his type of direction, and the cinematography is meticulously perfected. Because story changes time periods, not only did he help stylise it by changing the aspect ratio accordingly, but he also put in the effort to adopt older methods of practical film effects, using paintings as backdrops for scenery, and applying cheap make-up for nose bleeds that clearly doesn't even enter the characters' nostrils. So, whereas someone might criticize that for being a bad effect, it's actually intentional, and ironically enough, it shows an extra level of effort to include these 'mistakes'.
The zany and somewhat cartoonish tone and soundtrack are exactly what you would expect from Wes Anderson at this point, and it's all done very well. In many movies with more serious tones, unrealistic implausibilities often bother me. But not only does Wes Anderson recognise the implausibilities within his own films, he takes them and exaggerates them to the point where the ridiculousness then becomes part of the joke. So, in a way, he's chosen a style that makes his films almost completely except from criticism.
But if I do have one complaint to make about the film, there was a largely computer animated sequence within the film that I thought would have been more well suited had it used older practical effects. And I know this is just personal opinion, but even if it looked really fake and cheesy using miniatures, or even backlit projection, it not only would have been funny, but it would have stayed more consistent with the time period.
Overall, the film was extremely engaging, and I was entertained throughout. Not only is it a great film made by a talented director, but it's also a crowd pleaser.
Really enjoyable film though somewhat darker than the other Wes Anderson film I saw recently (Moonrise Kingdom), which was fine, just unexpected.
The best movie of 2014..
I watched this because it is nominated for best movie. I don't know why to be honest, humor is a fickle thing and this movie wasn't my kind of humor. The actors however did a splendid job and the storyline was ok
Image 4.5/5; Sound 4/5. I did not expect that I liked and what he has done, drawings, colors, camera
Ame cada minuto de esta película, no sabia que era del mismo director de Moonrise Kingdom pero te das cuenta casi de inmediato, te deja con una sonrisa en todos los aspectos.
I thought it was just ok. It definitely had funny parts, but just seemed to drag on (even though it's a very short film).
Wes Anderson yet again you have killed me with your cinematography! Bravo.
Trailer made me want to watch the movie. Sadly, the movie can't fulfil the expectations that the trailer set at all.
The jokes fall flat and the story's end is clear from the start while the main character Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) comes across as somewhat sneaky and mentally challenged at the same time. I'd describe the whole character as is as flawed.
However, besides that the movie itself has its own charm that is out of the question, mainly because of really capable actors. But I watched it to be entertained and frankly I wasn't.
The addition of as many celebtrities as possible in side roles doesn't make it a good movie either. Although it's not a bad movie, it certainly isn't great. It's forgettable, mediocre, just meh..
Wow! What a movie. I loved it!
The best film of 2014 so far. Funny, colourful and intriguing.
An incredible movie with outstanding camera work.
Cute, colorful and light. All of Wes' films have unique stories that are easy to connect with.
Entertaining. I liked it overall. It was filmed in a weird way, but it was fun and quirky.
Having recently watched Asteroid City, I was told I needed to go back and check out The Grand Budapest Hotel. To be clear, the Wes Anderson aesthetic is NOT for everyone. However, it is undeniably captivating and clever, and this movie is possibly the pinnacle of what he has to offer. Ralph Fiennes is incredible as expected and I can confidently recommend that everyone should at least check this one out because there is a greater than 0% chance that this will be one of your favorite movies ever.
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
The script balanced humour, action, and pathos with ease. Sharp and witty dialogue. The story moved at a brisk pace, never overstaying its welcome. Highly recommended for fans of quirky, offbeat comedies.
A film with eccentric storytelling and visually pleasing aesthetics. It is hard not to love the quirky characters and their interactions, the fast-paced plot, and the beautiful poetry that compliments the film.
I have so little to say about this movie. I find Wes Anderson to be such a tiring filmmaker. His shots are so fussily composed, his characters’ affectations are so unbearably whimsical, and his themes and motifs have just been beaten into the ground at this point. He’s been making the same movie for almost twenty years, and I’m so exhausted by him. I wouldn’t have watched Budapest if it hadn’t been nominated for Best Picture, but the Academy forced my hand. Look at that shot in the picture: does it not just grate on you? The obsessive symmetry, the garish production design, the bizarre mannerisms–it’s a ridiculous overdose of twee and I can’t deal with him anymore.
Was an intriguing story but a bit all over the place. I didn't hate it but nor did I love it. The intriguement was just enough to reach the end.
I’m a fan of Wes Anderson, but wasn’t expecting to like this movie. So I avoided it for some time. Now I wonder why it took me so long to finally get around to watching it?! Great cast and typical Anderson charm and style. Moved up to my top 3 Anderson films after TRT and Life Aquatic.
How do you even begin to describe such a film. That dialogue, it's just golden, every scene is so beautiful to watch and so different, it's so... Anderson.
You filthy, goddamn, pock-marked, fascist assholes! It was the moment where I lost my shit.
Great pictures, sometimes look like a Tarantino style.
Not what I expected based on the trailer, but amazing nonetheless. Dragged a little bit, but the story was fun, easy to follow, amazing performances, and as with all Wes Anderson productions: stunningly beautiful!
Pretty epic. Probably my favorite bisexual representation in modern media. I like when he says “the one with the clubbed foot? FUCKERS!” it was very satisfying.
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” sets itself apart from reality cinema and enchants with an exuberant adventure inspired by early twentieth-century novels. It’s a film that allows imagination to run wild without any intention to create the illusion of reality. Visually, it’s like flipping through a popup book. I loved how everything is quirky and colorful, yet so refined and sophisticated, with so many little details in each frame to add value to the storytelling. The narration is a bit too fragmented at times, but the fast pacing and sharp script help keep the film fresh and amusing throughout. It’s Wes Anderson to the extreme, and a film that does not want to be taken seriously.
The joy is in the journey not the destination.
9/10
every wannabe-fascist should watch this movie. i was so happy and entertained watching this film but super sad at the end
M. Gustave: What is a lobby boy? A lobby boy is completely invisible, yet always in sight. A lobby boy remembers what people hate. A lobby boy anticipates the client's needs before the needs are needed. A lobby boy is, above all, discreet to a fault. Our guests know that their deepest secrets, some of which are frankly rather unseemly, will go with us to our graves. So keep your mouth shut, Zero.
It’s a very unique movie. The colors and cinematography are interesting and make the film feel like something you never seen before. The shots that hover over the setting and show the cars and buildings as toys was very interesting. The cast is great and the acting as well. The screenplay and the story is original and very good. Wes Anderson is a good director and you can tell he was passionate about this movie. Overall it’s a unique original movie and it’ll be interesting to see if The French Dispatch lives up to this.
( 8 out of 10)
By far the most fascinating thing about this film is how intentional every single frame and word feel, it doesn't let out for a second, from the beginning to the end. Genius and one of a kind.
At this point I think we're pretty well beyond hope that Wes Anderson will ever try a different style of filmmaking, and for that I wish more power to him. Even the stop-motion children's film The Fantastic Mr. Fox, despite its literary origins, is indisputably Anderson from start to finish. So, in lieu of a proper evolution, perhaps the best one can hope for is for Mr. Anderson to make the perfect Wes Anderson movie. The Grand Budapest Hotel falls quite close to that ideal.
Thoroughly quirky, lovingly composed with a strict eye for heavy detail, funny and dense and sweet and genuine; it's everything I love about his pictures, draped over the skeleton of a different tale. The man certainly has his favorites - recurring actors from earlier in his career appear in the dozens throughout this one - but you'll smile and applaud their arrival, one by one, like traveling players in a variety of elaborate costumes and characters.
Ralph Fiennes is magnificent as the leading man, a silky-smooth, primped, proper, profane concierge with a knack for elderly women and a ferocious wit. His understudy, lobby boy Anthony Quinonez, is the film's anchor: a particularly straight, self-assured young lead who's cut from the same cloth as Rushmore's Max Fischer. Richly funny, otherworldy in its beauty, quick and sharp as a tack, it goes a bit overboard in the third act but that's all in the name of good fun.
Don't know what took me so long to finally watch this movie! It was delightfully macabre and exactly what I needed :heartpulse:
I definitely have to go back and watch more from Wes Anderson now.
I haven't seen a lot of Wes Anderson's films. I'm familiar with his style though, so I kind of knew what to expect from the beginning.
Cinematography is iconic Wes Anderson style. Colors, Camera movements, scene framing. Everything you see in his movies.
The acting was on point as well, very well acted. A pretty big cast list, more than I expected.
The story was fun, but also where the movie lost a step for me. There wasn't much depth to the story, and it flowed about how you'd expect. A few surprises here and there, but nothing that jumped out.
In the end, it was a fun movie. If you like Anderson's style, you'll surely like this movie.
This movie is beautiful. From the colors, to the sets, to the cinematography, to the costumes, it's all such a treat to watch. Good acting and a funny story makes this a complete package. The aspect ratio changes are an interesting way to show different time periods. Wes Anderson really is an unique director who knows what he wants and does it.
A peach of a film with literal peach-toned filters.
Stellar directing, the rest comes up short.
taki gatunek filmów to nie moja bajka.. fajnie się ogląda.. ale po wyjściu z kina nie pozostaje nic.. wielka pustka, zero refleksji, zero emocji.. poza tym, że zgrabnie zrobiony.. nope..
Another fantastic film from Wes Anderson.
Very good and memorable movie. Great performances. Great photography. Nice story.
I had to force myself to watch the movies, but i am glad i did.
First, the use of colors, and some scenes that i saw here and there repulsed me. Basically i watched it only because it got oscars :-).
At the end the movies is not that "weird" as it looks like from posters. What shines is the story telling. Which is great! Combined with very good acting, that combines well with the camera and at the end you have very great movies.
So if your gut tells you, you don't want to see this movie, but you like great stories, make yourself watch it and you will be surprised
Divertida con su toque dramático.
Me pareció un poco triste al final, donde nos damos cuenta que solo lo acompañan los recuerdos y un lo que resta de un hotel reconocido. La recomiendo, vale la pena verla.
The Grand Budapest Hotel" is not Wes Anderson's grandest work yet, but it is one worth an extended stay.
Usually I can very much agree with CatyAlexandre reviews :) but this time I didnt enjoy this movie as much. I found it a very strange movie and I stopped watching it, so I did not rate it. I'm afraid I would not be able to do it justice.
For what I did watch I would not get above 5 out of 10... perhaps it's just not for me.
Storia carinissima.Ho amato la direzione artistica.
charming. beautiful movie. superbly cast. knew very little about it going in other than someone i know who has similar tastes to mine like it. from the first shot i knew i was hooked. a brighter brazil was my first thought.
perfect movie me and the babes enjoyed it
Loved the art direction and the overall visual style and presentation. It's not a laughing-out-loud comedy, but it will surely put a smile on your face, it surely did to me. Also, brilliant acting by Ralph Fiennes!
I was charmed by this story. Sir Ralph, I still love you.
Really great visual and story part.
Great art direction and a very good storyline
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145503/reference
Not the first time Ralph Fiennes pretends to be Hungarian :)
AXУЕНЕН!
да!
и точка!
с уважением.
so close to perfection, but it felt like I was missing something at the end of the Movie. But still, another marvelous Job Mr. Wes =)
Especially liked the cinematography
Had a smile on my face the whole time!
Funny trailer. Interesting that it is in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Well, I do not even know where to start! The Grand Budapest Hotel was one of my most anticipated films this year. My expectations were very high and I can say it exceeded everything I was expecting.
Wes Anderson is a very peculiar and original director, there is no one like him and his style is unmistakable. With an interesting filmography is great to see his improvement over the years. This film is a good example of that. All his usual filming techniques, color palette, the history, quirky characters and scenarios always full of details keep getting better with each film. I would like to give the main highlight for the set design that will get you literally gaping!
Wes Anderson wrote this film based on the books of a writer named Stefan Zweig and the entire universe that he created around this story is absolutely fabulous! The Grand Budapest Hotel is a famous hotel in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka in the European Alps. In it we follow the adventures of the important concierge Gustave H. and his recent apprentice Zero Moustafa, who go far beyond the Grand Budapest. Gustave H. has the particularity to like seducing older and wealthy hotel guests. After years of involvement with one of these ladies, she is murdered and Gustave is the prime suspect of her murder. Then it starts all this great, crazy and hilarious mess!
Ralph Fiennes shines in this film, his performance is magnificent as the concierge Gustave H. In each scene he enters he steals the show! His performance is the one with the most spotlight but he is always supported by a whole cast that play their roles genially. The young and recent actor Tony Revolori is also very good and all the scenes between him and Ralph Fiennes are wonderful, the two had a great chemistry and that is transmited beyond the screen. Big names like F. Murray Abraham, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Tom Wilkinson and many others are all excellent in their small roles and sometimes we wished to see this talented names have a little more time on screen but each one has its importance in history.
Fun, colorful, with great dialogues and hilarious scenes, also leaving an important message about loyalty and friendship. Wes Anderson now elevates the bar very high, after this brilliant The Grand Budapest Hotel we are waiting to see what this great and unique filmmaker will do next. I think I can say that this happens to be my favorite film of him, because I think it is definitely his best and will also certainly be one of my favorites this year.
