This was an amazing musical. Hugh Jackman performed great, but the thing that gave me goosebumps was the song and performance of the "This Is Me" song.
We expected a lot more from this movie… maybe we were biased as so many people told us it's such a great movie, so we expected a lot.
But altogether the whole story was flat and so predictable. The soundtrack… every song sounds the same, so there's no distinction.
Effects are well made and actually the only impressive thing about this movie.
This is what a musical should be like. Fast paced, beautifully executed and choreographed and the music is astounding but The performances are what makes it all come together. Loved it!
This movie is terrible, not only ignored the real history of P. T. Barnum, the music is nauseating, it tries to be a feel good movie with a message but just ends up being a cheap musical production, with no art or story in it.
listen. i think the songs were great. The plot was meh, and at times a little cringey, BUT this was still a fun movie. I got hyped whenever they sang and it was fun. There some weird bits and cuts where i was like...."wat", but hey, this ain't an oscar movie. Its supposed to be a movie that slaps, and is it a movie that slaps, YESSIR. musicals ain't my thing but this was entertaining. Finished this at 2:10PM.

I'm gutted. Like, genuinely disappointed. As someone who was looking forward to this spectacle, listening to the soundtrack on Spotify before the movie even came out, I can't believe this is what I'm having to write about this. I expected this to be in my top ten of the year. I was hoping for a grand and memorable epic that had wonderful stuff, full of lovable characters, magical musical sequences, and etc. But this is not what I was treated to, no sir. Through the first half of this depressing bore, I kept bouncing around my head with my future rating, asking like, "Is this above-average? Am I enjoying this? Yeah, I guess so. There's been some cool scenes and music so far." But as the movie just kept trudging along past some seriously unexciting and eye-rolling numbers, I very slowly started to lower my expectations and rating. It wasn't until the very end when I very audibly said, "Oh my god, that can't be the end," and then the black screen came. The credits started rolling, and I just stood up. My face was literally down and I just felt depressed. I was the only one in the theater, by the way. Walking to the car, I couldn't believe what I just saw.
I'd say there's less than 10 actual minutes of P.T Barnum doing fantastical things on a stage. The rest of the movie is drama between him, his family, some European singer whom he takes on tour which causes further drama with his ensemble of freaks, and then Zac Efron's absolutely pointless subplot trying to get with one of the performers. There's so much the movie tries to tackle, and yet doesn't develop any of it, and then forgets the main reason people are there in the theater in the first place: To see the big dance numbers with jukebox music. I understand, this movie is really just about Barnum's life (When it actually isn't) and not about the big musical numbers, but if you're going to sell your movie on being a Luhrmann-esque musical, at least try to deliver on some of that. And if you won't do that, at least make your movie interesting to watch. There's the whole thing with Barnum's daughters, wanting to give them a good life, then there's his greed and wanting to become better than what he was, then the tour with the singer, then there's fulfilling what his wife wanted in their initial marriage (She has no character development the whole fucking movie, by the way, she's wasted), then there's gathering the freakshow people, then there's meeting Zac Efron, then there's Zac's sub-plot, and just, god, there was so much tapped into, but unused fat. This is actually a case where I would've preferred a four-hour 60's style musical epic, just so we could flesh out all of these ultimately pointless scenes. Some are genuinely interested. I wish there was like a big confrontation with the protesters, there KIND of is, but not much.
There's this other part where a critic comes to Barnum about the show, and honestly, he was the most interesting and sound character the whole movie, not even joking. Barnum tries to write him off as a snobbish newspaper critic who hates fun, but later after Barnum's building is destroyed in a fire, the critic comes back to him a final time. His words are actually the focal-message to the entire film, the big message, "Even with your cheap and fake display, you had people up there, all shapes and sizes, yet treated as equals." This line didn't come from the propped-up "wise" Barnum, not his wife, not his children, not even one of the freaks... the freaking newspaper critic. There's a problem with your movie when your most interesting character is that guy. I could even forgive the gigantic sub-plot about the European singer if at least the editing and pacing was done better. I'd say roughly 1/3'd of the entire run-time is this scandal drama that Barnum gets into with this woman; it's so uninteresting. People say this movie is like a tribute to Luhrmann's musicals; oh fuck no, it absolutely isn't. If you pay attention to the creative choices in that Red Curtain Trilogy, the dialogue and camera movements are so wacky and crazy, even in some of the calmer moments. The only shots I remember from this are clearly the trailer shots from the first 10 minutes. All The Greatest Showman has are some decently-done musical numbers mixed in with some really bad and under-developed "character" scenes.
When I was listening to the song "This Is Me" before I saw the movie, I envisioned something much more grand and amazing than what I saw on-screen. I got this idea of like a big emotional performance on-stage by Keala Settle, during the circus tour or something. Or even what if this was to the protesters? Wouldn't that have been more emotionally engaging? Instead, this is just her walking into ball-room with all the rich people scoffing her. Sure, I get what they were doing, but it was not nearly as effective as it could've been, and there was no build-up to it. What if the song happened after a whole sub-plot of confrontations happened with the protesters? I don't know, just something better than the shit I saw. The opening sequence with Barnum as a kid is so rushed and over-looked, that the connections to that opening later on have no effect because it's so brushed over. There's a whole part with his wife that ties back to that opening, and it's longer than the opening itself, it's ridiculous. Let me ask you a question: Without looking up the IMDB or page here, can you name off any of the characters besides Barnum's family and Zac Efron? What's the bearded fat lady's name? Why is it that I'm not able to remember her outside her appearance and one song? Great job getting me attached to these freak-show displays. By the end of the movie, I'm still in the exact same place as when I entered, not moved or mentally changed.
@Jumpy, I'm jealous of the theater experience you had. Getting to laugh at the movie with a bunch of other people? Man, did I wish I enjoyed sitting through this, at least for the rights reasons. Just the fact I was actually bored by what I was watching is a testament to how much they fucked up. I'm really, seriously disappointed. Don't go into this movie expecting the circus. You're not going to get it. All you'll get is a boring fan-fiction of a much more interesting sounding movie. Maybe my imagination for The Greatest Showman was more than what they could deliver. Just unbelievable. I'm going to go watch Moulin Rouge! again, bye guys.
The Simon Cowell of his time, this is a jaunty musical about the man who gained fame and fortune by highlighting the defects of others on stage. Okay, so he may not have been that bad - a character in the film says Barnum is 'celebrating all of humanity' - but I doubt the man's motives were that pure. The film itself is okay, but it's hardly a great movie musical, despite the positive ravings of others.

I don’t know about the real story so I’ll only talk about the film: this is the worst thing I’ve watched for a very long time. It took me 5 tries to finish it. It was even painful. I love musicals, I REALLY DO, but this... every piece of melody sounded exactly the same as the previous one and I had the feeling every act was starting somewhere in the middle of the song. The general impression was thus that I was watching the trailer of the film instead of the actual thing. For 2 hours. The story was very predictible and it gave the characters no time to develop. Finally, what about the women? Even blander; mere decoration.
In conclusion, I never expected I would like a film about a circus and I was right. It doesn’t work for me. In the end, it’s just nicely trying to introduce a man who gathers people to make a freak show and trains animals for such a purpose— even when they are (terribly) designed by a computer program.
Saw it's about 8 point everywhere, excited a lot because it's hard to find something to watch nowadays. Omg the intro is awesome, excited even more! Then the girl arrives and i expect the boy to talk.
In that moment, the moment that boy started to sing instead talking i wanted to destroy the holywood with nuke. When this musical fashion will end!

Went in with great expectations and still I was pleasantly surprised. That happens very rarely. A truly enjoyable movie and one of the best I’ve seen recently. Everything about it is perfection. I already know I’ll be rewatching it many times.

A thoroughly entertaining film, with good cinematography and editing, and great performances by the cast. But the plot was shallow and very predictable.

The great Hugh Jackman once again manages to impress, this time in a warm, emphatic, energetic and down-to-earth part.
A lovely, vivid and colorful historical setting supports the story and characters perfectly; the modern music fits the era surprisingly well.
The lovely Zendaya is the icing on the cake. I admit this film made me have a celebrity crush on her.

There is some lovely detailed humor and playfulness in the cinematography and the dialogue.
Fortunately the song numbers do not dominate the run-time, since they do little to progress the story, even if they are spectacular in choreography and cinematography.
Jackman and Zac Efron work very well together and form a lovely duo upon which most of the film rests.
Great performances, fine music and beautiful visuals make this an entertaining film to sit through, even if it isn't the most original musical.

A musical and make-your-dreams-come-true-story in true Disney spirit (even the songs sound like something from a classic Disney musical). The big difference is the very brief backstory that is handled and finished during the first major song number. It's not as much of a coming-of-age story as the best Disney musicals are. The script brings up many of the same themes as well and does that part well.
The music is modern and polished, but there is a lack of memorable songs, with a couple of notable exceptions.
There are hints of dramatic tension present here and there, but the fast tempo of the film makes it impossible for the script to properly handle said tensions. The film scratches the surface and then moves on.
The Zendaya/Efron love story bothers me, because it appears out of nowhere and doesn't feel very realistic or natural.
There's a shallow love triangle thing going on in the story that really doesn't go deep enough to tug on my heart strings.
It's hard not to enjoy all the happiness, energy and love induced in the story and the performances.

Thrilling set-pieces alone don’t make a fantastic musical.
The musical pieces are really well done, but I can’t say the same for the majority of the music. Most of them sounded so much like generic pop music that I could’ve humed something over the top and it would’ve sounded the same. “This is Me” and “The Greatest Show” are contrary to this but most others are so forgettable that I can’t even remember the names of them.
The film is also tremendously acted. Whether it be Hugh Jackman’s charisma-filled performance or Keala Settle’s Lettie Lutz who steals the scene in any she appears in. However, the less we say about Michelle Williams’ performance is the better. I think she sung something once?
The Greatest Showman is rather let down in terms of the story as it races through P.T.Barnum’s story, speeding through the circus-sections (best bits) and mobility scootering it’s way through side-plots such as opera singer Jerri Lind which the film spent way too much time on. None of the story held any emotional weight, despite the film pushing for the audience to feel for the characters and how P.T’s actions drastically changed other people’s lives. But it all just fell a bit flat and I wanted the next thrilling set piece to start right away.

Watched this with the family on vacation and now everybody thinks I'm the movie doctor because I know just what film to prescribe to make everyone happy.
Just like the title suggests, this film is a great show piece, and while it attempts at finding a deeper meaning and message about acceptance and being oneself, the film ultimately falls a bit flat in telling the story of P. T. Barnum (P. T. Barnum) and his rise to circus fame.
Don't get me wrong, there are sequences in this film that look fantastic and the way things transition from one phase to the next is seamless. It's clear that the filmmakers took great pains to show the way Barnum's showmanship intersected with his personal life and vice versa. All of the typical circus sideshow oddities are there from the "bearded lady" to the "dog man" and everything in between. It was even a bit surprising that in the 21st century, these characters were treated as callously as they were at the beginning of the film, set up as being true oddities even though we have a much better understanding of the conditions that make people unique today.
The film shows a young Barnum working as a tailor's apprentice before meeting the girl of his dreams, the rich Charity Hallett (Michelle Williams). They marry and have two children before Barnum loses everything and opens his museum of wax figures in New York to dismal sales before eventually bringing in the "freak" performers. His willingness to employee these individuals is ridiculed by critics, but enjoyed by (most of) the public which eventually leads to bigger and bigger successes.
But despite all the spectacle, the film is terribly predictable. There are attempts at being profound and inspiring, but they are covered over with the music throughout, which often takes over scenes that feel like they should have a little more space to be quiet and breathe. The frenetic pace of the various performances and dance numbers make the 105 minute run-time feel stuffed full and forced.
That said, there are a few scenes where some brilliant acting shines through, specifically one very touching scene between Zendaya's trapeze artist Anne Wheeler and Zac Efron's Phillip Carlyle. Unfortunately, this only further exposes the problem plaguing the rest of the film by showing there can be quiet moments of reflection. Jackman's performance, while nothing extraordinary, is entertaining and fills the screen, proving who the true showman in this piece is.

First things first this movie is extremely entertaining as a family friendly musical but I have the same problem with it that I’ve had since its inception, casting P. T. Barnum as an underdog hero undermines the horrors of the true story. Leave the real accounts of these characters to one side however and I don’t have all too much of an issue with the greatest showman. The musical numbers are all pretty good and are accompanied by fantastic choreography. The cast are also great, Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams turn in performances you would expect from actors of their talent and Zendaya and Zac Efron really hold their own in challenging roles. I think there is a more interesting P. T. Barnum biopic to be made but this works fine as a family movie with a good message. With a string of lazy and annoying kids movies in recent years this is a film I would highly recommend to any parent. It Doesn’t fully sugarcoat it’s source martial but it also still wants you to route for Barnum, depending on how that makes you feel, this movie ain’t half bad.

In the first place, I refused to watch it because they sell it only as a musical, however it's definitely more than that. It teaches you an eye-opening life lesson. Furthermore, the soundtrack is a complete masterpiece; I still listen to it.
Everyone comparing to La La Land and all I could see was Sing! But the songs here were the best in a musical.
found it to be utterly dull, the songs all had the same 80's base track, there was no drama, It feels like there's 50 minutes worth of character development sat on the cutting room harddrive waiting to be added back in for an extended edition.
when something did happen, a big happy tune was sung and we very nicely merged to a new scene , it's almost like "click" the musical, if PT just sang during the bits he didn't like. he'd skip to a good bit.

This show had great potential: Hugh Jackman leading a star studded cast; music composed by the Oscar winning duo from LA LA LAND; Bill Condon writing the screenplay; a wealth of spectacle in its subject matter - PT Barnum's Circus - but I was underwhelmed by the whole production. First, I don't know why they anchored their story to a historical figure and then built a world of pure fantasy. Why not just build a world of fantasy? By linking it to a specific person and events you open the door to all sorts of cultural questions: the treatment of his performers - human and animal; the untangling of the myth from the man and why the choice to tie the music to contemporary pop rather than find the music of the time. These were all discordant notes to me. Better pure fantasy than poor history. I was also saddened by the waste of Michelle Williams in her role - she had serious dramatic chops that were underutilized. On the more positive side, the vocal talents were marvellous, the songs, though anachronistic, were catchy, the images were spectacular, the performers - great and small - were endearing. All together I give the production a 6.5 (breaking even) out of 10. [Historial? Musical Drama Fantasy]
Boffo old fashioned entertainment. This musical has powerful singing, great dancing, colorful costumes (and characters), great acting and an entertaining story. See it while it is still on the big screen to send Hollywood a message that we love to see movies that entertain at the movie house. 10/10
Wow! I loved this musical! I truly felt the whismy and magic that Barnum was trying to convey in his original shows. Breathtaking effects, catchy songs and "freaks" you want to love!
I loved how there was that one song that kept popping up throughout the movie and tying the different parts of the story together.

What an AMAZING film. I don't know why it has only 80%, because this film was the best musical I've watched since Moulin Rouge. And it says a lot. A lot.
I thought during a film: "Oh my..who directed this film was a genius". The movements, the scenes, the close-ups..everything was planned down to the last details. Amazingly done.
The songs in it. Where do I begin? I don't know.
Every music was beautifully written, and made sense with context, with the actor and situations. And every song that appear I said to myself: "That's my favorite"..and then " Nop, that is my favorite"...and that was going on and on until the end of the movie. I do have my favorite, that was the one that gave me goosebumps all over, that was "This is me". Just thinking about I have goosebumps again. The actors were AMAZING. And we have some new faces that were incredible. But incredible for real. Every single one of them knows how to sing, which is a little sad and unfair for us, mortals. Lol
The story is created from a real deal. The creator of the first circus that we know today. Barnum was also the first one to take these different people to perform for the first time.
Anyway, the story is amazing and so worthy of your time. If you love musicals, this movie is a mandatory stop for you. If you don't, after this you'll come around.

I can't be the only one who really can't stand Hugh Jackman's acting when he has a REAL role. He's ok as an action hero, but I can always see him acting when he takes on a challenging role. His singing is mediocre and really I find that most the time I just want him to shut up and close his mouth. The story was ok, but he spoilt it for me.
If you're into musicals, then this movie is a perfect fit for you. I only rated this at 5 because I'm not into musicals, I was hoping for more of a biography/drama.

As someone who loathes musicals, I kept wanting to hate this film but was only partially successful. Some of the musical numbers were even not terrible.
This was one of my most anticipated movies, in a long time. I was so excited, and still am! Absolutely loved it. I didn't want it to end. I had been listening to the soundtrack a few weeks before I saw the movie, and I must say, the movie is just as great as the soundtrack.
The cast was perfect, and it truly felt like they were a family. I find the story to be so inspiring and wonderful, I want everybody to watch it, and learn from it, and enjoy it, and love it, and dance to it, and feel it, and I just really really like this movie.
I am already planning my second visit to the cinema to see this.
I took my wife and 6 children to see this film. We all loved it. The songs became a constant sound around my home. I thought the story line lacked consistency, but the songs made it fantastic.

This is the musical that I have been waiting for! Despite all the great critics reviews, LaLaLand was a bust. The singing was mediocre, the dancing was mediocre and the story itself was boring. But this movie is everything that I was expecting and more! The actors were great, the singing was amazing and the story was enoyable. And above all else, the songs were well-written and will have you singing long after you've left the theater. There have been some complaints that the story itself is highly fictionalized, well, it's a musical, of course its fictionalized!
Full-on, over-the-top, musical which despite any reservations I may have had, left me tapping my feet and grinning like an idiot. Hugh Jackman on fine form.

This movie has all the elements of a classic musical, colourful visuals, awesome costumes, an emotional roller-coaster of a story played by a stunning cast. But it's greatest gift to us is the soundtrack. I've had "This is me" in my most replayed Spotify list since it was release.

Did I despise the main character of this film completely? Hell yesss! Was this still a stunning and beautiful movie with gorgeous and uplifting music? Hell freaking yessss AGAIN!!
This is, on the whole, a very entertaining but massively overhyped and overrated musical film. The reviews on here by @JonathanYtreberg, @filmtoaster and @mrcoldstream (TheoKallström) pretty much sum up how I feel about The Greatest Showman, so I won't wax lyrical and repeat what they've said. "This is Me" and "The Greatest Show" (and the other, less memorable tracks) work really well within the context of the scenes in which they're played, and I fully support the concept of open-minded acceptance and equality that they're conveying, as I am also a little 'non-standard' in appearance (although not to the extremes that the show members are). However, they've been played so much by all the eight or so radio stations that I listen to that I now switch over as soon as a Greatest Showman track starts playing, as I'm so sick of their shout-in-your-face-and-cram-the-message-down-your-throat delivery that I actually don't like them any more. Why this film and its tracks get so much attention, I don't know. There are far better musical films with far better stand-out songs (Les Misérables, The Lion King (animated), Bugsy Malone, to name but a few), so I'm guessing that the only reason that these ones stand out is that they're socio-politically poignant. Hugh Jackman's acting and singing were fine, but not as good as in the Les Mis film, where he was truly outstanding.

A great musical that has emotion and character in it. A lot of big names in this movie, and I feel like they all delivered on what they were trying to do.

One of my favorite movies ever. This is a musical entertainment masterpiece. The entire film has incredible, creative, and unique choreography in almost every song. The scenery is also spectacularly breathtaking. This film is inspirational, uplifting, entertaining and much more as it represents the joy that entertainment brings people to a tee. All while in the meantime this is a fascinating way to showcase the beginning history of how the very successful Branum and Bailey Circus started. The plot development was on point and the musical scenes were so well placed and portrayed of where the film currently was. Just a spectacle.

Topics like inclusion, racism and patriarchalism. The loveliness of America in the 1800s straight into your living room. The Greatest Showman tackles nearly all topics of today's social world. And does so in a highly entertaining, stunning and even touching atmosphere.
Smoke and Mirrors
or "How to get away with fraud". P.T. Barnum's life is completely build up on a lie. A lie where one asks himself "Who did a bank not know or notice that they are being lied to?". So, after Barnum fooled his bank, he buys an old museum with old stuffed animals. An idea that certainly is not good. What was Barnum thinking? Anyway, this museum is not very well visited, actually, his own wife bought three tickets. Why I do not know, probably just to tell her husband that they sold three tickets that day. When his daughters tell him that he has too many dead things in his museum, he starts looking for curious human beings, which he finds plentiful of.
A question one should ask oneself: How can they build a former museum into a theatre and then into an opera hall with no downtime?
Twice the pride, double the fall
But instead of taking on responsibility for his oddities, he is just trying to get into the upper class and to be accepted by the community. Betraying his starting crew, the people who bring him the money and trusted him, people who were never accepted by anyone, after Barnum met the opera singer Jenny Lind, a tool to get him accepted into the upper class, the downfall of P.T. Barnum begins.
Doesn't he realize that defying his oddities is making them leave and leaving him with no one to run his shows? Why are they running his shows after he obviously rejected them and offended them?
On the first look, it is shown that everyone in the city hates the actors and rooting from that hate, the shows as well. But who are the people that watch his shows? They are very well visited. So well visited that he can pay back his loan in no time and buy an old mansion and repair it. In the end, a tour through America cannot use all of his savings!
And suddenly, when Barnum is touring through America, the shows, left under the supervision of his junior partner Phillip Carlyle, are very unappreciated. Was Barnum the factor why everyone was visiting the shows? Now that he is absent, nobody enjoys the shows anymore? This unenjoyment is even going thus far as to start a brawl inside the circus. Particularly people from the working class are feeling offended by the shows and set the building on fire. That happens after a disaster with Jenny Lind appeared, leading her to kiss Barnum right in front of photographers, forcing his wife to leave him. So, after he lost his wife and his building, his house is seized by the bank. So he hasn't paid back his loan?
Being left with nothing is what Barnum needs to be cleansed. The fire and everything connected to it marks rock bottom, the point where everything is lost he feared to lose. The moment he starts to get back up is the moment where he rescues his partner from the fire in the circus. The moment he regains hope is the moment when his oddities find him in a bar, drinking to forget his sorrows, with that the third act ends and the fourth act, called dénounment, where he starts to rebuild his life, gaining back his wife and children, rebuilding the circus in a tent, going back to his family and giving the reigns of the circus to his partner, Phillip Carlyle.
The Last Scene
A scene that is highly unrealistic. What kind of tent hast that much space for actors and two elephants to run that much of a distance? They had to build that thing as big as a football field! Ok, not quite as big, but half a field surely.
And why gets Phillip suddenly standing ovations as he slides in? Apparently, when Barnum was touring America and he was left alone, everyone was hating the shows during that time. Now they love him? Strange change, but ok.
Also, how is Barnum watching his girls grow up, without any money? Or is he keeping the reigns of the circus and just letting Phillip develop the shows? So, like a CEO that owns the company but is always on holidays on the Bahamas.
Music
The music is one, if not even THE best element of the whole film.
The Duo "Pasek and Paul" wrote the texts for this movie, as did they for the movie La La Land back in 2016. Songs who go straight into one's ear. Yes, they are very artificial, but I think that is what makes them great, thus appealing to a broader audience, opening the genre of musical theatre and musical up.
Summary
The Greatest Showman is a very good, classical musical story, easy to watch and follow.
The only critique I have is that it is a very clicheé-like story from the classic American Dream. One that has nothing is able to build an enormous wealth just by working hard. A very nice story, but not one that is grounded in reality.

Not only did I want to like it. I wanted to LOVE it. I saw the scene where Never Enough is performed before I saw the film and then from the opening scene, I thought the movie was going to thrill me, but it ultimately felt hollow to me. The modern music was really good, but it took me out of it a little. Also, I wanted it to be longer and a little darker at times. I felt like the freak show characters and the relationship between Barnum and the singer could have been fleshed out a lot more. This could have been a grand two and half hour epic. But instead, we got a really good hour and a half musical by way of Hollywood. Fun film, but ultimately too fluffy and empty.
Great movie. Since the first X-Men movie, every film that has Hugh Jackman in never lost me.
He'a always saying he belongs on stage much more than he belongs on screen. Lucky for us he can do both.

10/10 for this incridible musical. The picture was perfect, the actors made a beautiful job: acting, singing and dancing. The soundtrack killed it! Watching this made me crying a little... Reminds me "AHS Freak Show" when they choose freak artists to the show and how their lifes changed from this, the courage to be who you really are and show your talent to the world without fear.
This was a surprise love for me. I'd never even heard of it before I watched it. The music was fantastic!

Hugh Jackman does a great job in his role of this movie. I enjoyed the story, and the pacing of the movie.
For me, musicals tend to take away from a story more than add to it, and I felt the same way with this one.
If you're into musicals, this was one of the better ones I've seen, otherwise I'd say this one is skippable.

Fun and entertaining movie with an interesting story, good singing and choreography. With Hugh Jackman being great in it and the stunning visuals I ended up leaving the cinema surprised and with a smile on my face. All in all, it is a great movie.
