copy past from the danish movie with the same name, shit on them
Good first act, then it becomes really annoying with everyone crying and babbling nonstop. Also, Jake is undoubtedly great and very talented, but I thought he was seriously overacting in most scenes of the movie. It almost felt like he was forcibly trying to make himself cry in the last scene. Very cringe.
Well this was a piece of work. Not consistent all through out. I was on grip the first 30 minutes but i didn't realize i was already doing other things while just listening to it on the background. Oh, and this was a remake of a Danish film with the same title. I already think this is unnecessary, on the other hand, Jake Gyllenhaal's performance on this film was on fire though, a true Hollywood treasure.
What's the difference between the 2021 and 2018?? Is it basically the same movie just copied by Netflix for "exclusivity"???
Excellent movie. Takes place in two rooms, and only 90 minutes long. Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic.
There are no surprises if you have seen the original movie but if you haven’t seen that, then this remake is good enough.
Got to say, what a control freak. Would hate to work with him.
Watching a word-by-word remake of another movie is just creepy. It's like watching someone speak the English subtitles of the original.
Of course americans gotta remake foreign movies, listening to a foreign language for 90 minutes is way too complicated.
Well, Jake, that was tense!
Throughout the movie your opinion about most main characters will change, and at the end the whole meaning of the movie changes, brilliant movie.
Carbon-copy of the movie sharing the same name, still solid though, great performance by Jake.
Loved this movie. Its basically a one man show staring Jake Gyllenhaal. Its one man on the phone for and hour and a half. Its like the Tom Hardy movie Locke but with way more emotion and alot more at stake. Never saw the foriegn original and never will. 10 years ago Jake would be guaranteed an Oscar nom. But in 2021 this movie will be ignored.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor. He carries the weight of the entire movie and does an excellent job. The plot is intriguing but the script isn't able to pull you through. I thank it is not a long movie because that makes it enjoyable.
Considering this is a series of phone calls that take place in three different rooms, this is an incredibly gripping and emotional. Absolutely sterling performance from Jake Gyllenhaal!
Bad acted, at some points the dialogue between the characters make no sense. Waste of time.
major cringe. nails across the chalkboard. BAD. awful story. repetitiveness & nauseating. save yourself some time: go buy some paint, paint, then watch it dry instead!
Pretty good plot. Initially, i thought it was gonna be very predictable just that he's a cop with anger issues. But as it progresses of course i realized i was wrong and i caught myself being judgmental like Joe was, thinkin Emily was the victim and Henry was the bad guy. Ironic how it turned out but at least, Joe resolved the whole case and actually found it in himself to do the right thing in the end. :) Would recommend it~
A solid thriller that lets Gyllenhaal shine for the full runtime, a very good version of this type of one location movie
This was a decent thriller film but one that I couldn't watch again due to its linear storyline but it is definitely enjoyable for an afternoon watch.
Like hearing a joke for the second time, you don't know if you laugh less because of the person telling it or because you've heard it before. Anyway, shut up, just be happy you're laughing.
I saw the original Danish film in the cinema and loved it. This one a little less, but at least there was Jake Gyllenhaal and he didn't make any weird choices (cough okjavelvetbuzzsaw cough cough).
"broken people save broken people"
NOTE FOR MYSELF SO I REMEMBER SOMEDAY, ONLY REPRESENTS MY OPINION/THOUGHTS FOR MYSELF NOT A “REAL REVIEW“, SO YOU PROBABLY WONT AGREE WITH IT
(also its not my 1st language)
6.5 - 7.0
- the Car Door scene (05:50) made me laugh so hard, I also work in a call center and could relate 100% , loved it xD
- a little kid can remember numbers that well?? Jealous xD
- Gyllenhaal did a great performance
- I kinda expected a twist with Emily/in general, not exactly that one tho
- intense / suspense almost all the way through
- better than expected
Haven't seen the original. Thought Jake Gyllenhaal did a fantastic job as expected, even within the limitations of it all being in two rooms. I imagine it's particularly difficult if 90 minutes of film is focused solely on one person's facial expressions.
Okay this movie lost me for about an hour and then brought me back. I have to say Jake Gyllenhaal is just amazing. It is a must watch.
Perfect for when you want a thriller but don’t care for heavy gore. Def a psychological thriller with Jake at the helm. I’ve seen the original version too and liked it.
But I really liked Jake in this and loved that it’s updated to be relevant in today’s world.
And while I admit if you’re don’t like Jake in lots of close-ups, you won’t like this. I thought he was perfectly cast and I was spellbound.
It wasn’t very elegantly done. Suddenly the husband is a sobbing victim when he initially wasn’t like that at all. Didn’t take long to realize she was batshit crazy. Ultimately, this guy seemed to be all about what was best for him regardless of everyone else and the impact on them.
I really wanted to like the movie because I love Jake Gyllenhaal. But a good friend is a 911 operator and explained how her job works. There were way too many inconsistencies with the whole story. They go through special training so a cop can't just be plopped there and trying to "explain it away" with a directive putting cops on dispatcher lines, eh. Far fetched. His erratic behavior probably wouldn't fly either.
That being said, if you ignore the made up crap, the storyline in between is pretty good, even how it ends.
Jake is as amazing doing as Ryan Reynolds was when he was buried alive
Not sure how to feel about this. Toes the line of cop apologia. Excellent acting; shot entirely in 2 rooms. No doubt about that. A powerful story when divorced from a real-world context. But, when seen in the context of the stuff happening around us, it leaves me conflicted.
Definitely not as good as the original.
The Guilty, the camera work really helped carry the emotions in this single actor based movie. Jake plays his role well however, the story is rather linear and in some ways, predictable. The ending is a little cliched and nothing spectacular. Overall; was worthy of a watch but won't be returning to this movie any time soon.
The budget for this must have been dirt cheap.
I feel like it could have been 20 minutes shorter, which is saying something since it's only an hour and an half long.
After a promising premise and a remarkable performance by Jake, the movie falls short because of the sluggish pace of the movie, Jake manages to portray a variety of emotions throughout the movie, other than that it was nothing special
5/10
This was a failure. There's no such thing as a cop (AKA a state-sponsored, state-armed, murderous, neo-Nazi terrorist) w/ a will to do the right thing.
A gripping thriller based at a 911 call center. Very tense, but the truth will prevail. Well worth a watch. :thumbsup_tone1:
A very interesting thriller as it all takes place in one setting following a corrupt crop a day away from his trial who finds himself in a shift long chase to help save what seems to be an abducted woman from a 911 call. It’s edge of your seat thrilling with a great twist at the end but what is lacking is that there is some excitement building up about him maybe leaving the office to go on foot but never does.
For a 'one room' film this was an engaging thriller that was well-paced and contained unexpected twists.
6/10 - Above-average film that I'd rewatch if in the right mood.
it was good, with great tension and a good plot twist. if you don't know the story, the end then i guess it's worth watching. i won't watch it again tho.
Perfect example of why you can't count on ratings. Gripping film with phenomenal acting. I didn't know the original existed, but it does explain why Netflix was able to produce a great film in current year, since it's apparently a line-for-line remake. Still, amazing cinematography. A gem amongst the Netflix trash heaps.
Jake Gyllenhaal didn't have to go this hard with the role, but he did and I love him for it.
The Guilty is a gripping experience but runs out of steam before crossing the finish line.
Jake Gyllenhaal did such a fantastic job in this film. The complex emotion that he displayed here was an absolute clinic on acting. He transitioned from shock to anger to sadness with ease, demonstrating the true emotions of a person dealing with a difficult situation while simultaneously being haunted by the past. It was brilliant the way he carried the entire film with just him, his phone, and the same dispatcher room for 90 minutes. Gyllenhaal wasn't the only one who was excellent but the entire ensemble of actors doing voice work over the phone were incredibly solid.
I really enjoyed the story of this film; we've seen the whole one-man act before, but this was incredibly engaging. I was completely locked in at parts leaning on the edge of every word delivered over the phone as the pieces of the puzzle slowly start to unravel. It was very fun to be a part of the investigation and continually having to alter my theories based on new information. Although, once the big reveal occurs, the movie overstays its welcome. It lingers on Joe for a little bit too long and I was waiting for it to be over. Not a great sign.
Regardless of the lulls in the script, The Guilty still found a way to keep me mostly engaged throughout the majority of the film. Which is a testament to the amazing performances from Gyllenhaal and the rest of the cast.
Verdict: Good
Score: 75%
Good but not good enough. Low budget film that at my surprise has some pretty good names attached to it. Something I only learned after watching the film when the end credits rolled.
The story is suspenseful and does as it promised in the Netflix description. It had me on the edge of my seat. Now plot wise... not very strong. The 'twist' was an easy catch for me. Maybe that's because I always tend to look for the unexpected.
Jake Gyllenhaal is not on my favorites list and he plays a character that is somewhat morally grey so that didn't make it any easier. The way it was filmed, kept to one (or two) rooms made it interesting. I think that is what saved the movie. On story alone it wouldn't have survived...
Episode 10x09
Fuqua is credited with this remake of the Danish namesake by Gustav Möller, from 2018, from which, I have the feeling, that he has copied every last comma. If you liked that one, this one is exactly the same, only we have the great Jake Gyllenhaal as the protagonist. Either of the two is highly recommended (but not both, it is not necessary).
P.D .: In the 6x15 program you have the criticism of the original.
i think jake gyllenhaal did a great job, but i dont understand WHY this was remade, basically, shot for shot ??? i watched them back to back and it felt like a waste of time like Psycho (1960) and Psycho (1998). Antoine Fuqua needs to just focus on originals, he's a solid director !
I actually liked this better than the original.
Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic. He played an asshole that has a heart and he did it well. The movie is solitary with no set changes, but you feel the action through the dialogue and acting. Very well done.
this could rather have been an audio file, just wasted time in making a full movie inside a room..
Fantastic acting. Unique plot. Dynamic storyline. Not bad at all in various perspectives.
I didn't know this film was being remade and finally got around to watching the original just under 2 months ago. Lo and behold a few days later I saw a trailer that this remake had been done and was releasing shortly. The original is better in my opinion, but Jake does great work. I watched it to see his performance and wasn't disappointed w it. The film is almost a carbon copy w a few changes. 5.8 for me. Original was a 7.4. See that one if you haven't seen either.
Jake and Ethan doing an English language remake ... things must be tough. I really liked the original. This one's OK, but why ...?
nothing special and the ending was predictable
I know it was supposed to be cool that it was only set in one place but it really didn’t add to it
Great movie with a nice twist.
10/10
Is this a remake of a foreign movie or something. Feel like I’ve seen it before
Meh. It was good and I like JG but something was missing and I can’t place it. Reminded me of the movie Phonebooth a bit.
This movie I thought was going to be procedural, EHHHH wrong. This takes place in a small setting but bigger than movies like Brake or Buried. Both great movies by the way. Jake G. does a great job of holding your attention so much you miss subtle details that are clues in the story. Great one time watch, maybe a re-watch down the line. Solid 7
This movie was a waste of time
great time killing movie, specially i love the actor
A very good movie. Gyllenhaal did a great job - too good IMO - I absolutely hated the character he played. So in that sense, it was torture to watch this person on screen the whole time. But the concept, script, as well as acting is really good.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
As always Great Acting from Jake but tbh there is something in the movie
like man you could make a great movie but i understand how it's hard to make good movie in one place
but Anyway didn't regret watching it

Meh, I wouldn't watch it again. 5/10
