The Ice Storm 1997

Unusual drama about dysfunctional families over a Thanksgiving holiday. There is something about it that draws you in and keeps your attention. As lives unravel the intensity grows. This movie is one I enjoyed rewatching again recently after many years. As others have stated the acting is exceptional. The characters are mostly quite interesting. This movie will not be for everyone but if for nothing else, it may appeal to those who can appreciate an authentic take on what life was like in the late 70’s.

Genuinely tragic, well acted, and filled with metaphorical allegory. Worth experiencing.

Paul Hood: “Your family is the void you emerge from, and the place you return to when you die. And that's the paradox - the closer you're drawn back in, the deeper into the void you go.”

This was a rather bleak drama about families hoping to find something in the face of an impending ice storm. The ice storm itself really isn't that much of a topic in the movie. Instead, it adds to the already bleak backdrop that is pervasive throughout the movie. It very much reminds me of a more subtle version of American Beauty. In that film the characters and the story lines are a little more exaggerated. Above all the acting is superb.
