The premise of the movie was interesting and Marion Cotillard was well cast although I don't think she was as good as everyone seemed to be going on about her at the academy awards. Joachim's portrayal lacked an honest build of the character's obsession and conflict. It was okay.
This is a classic example of the parts being greater than the whole. There were some really great performances in this film and yet the film left me wanting.
The movie was OK. I think it's save to say that I'll never watch a movie with Joaquin Phoenix and will not enjoy his performance which was (as usual) a real contribution to this film.
Great acting, good pictures. But this was truly the most boring movie I've seen in a long, long time.
Such a beautiful movie -- and so cold, too.
Well made immigrant drama that is probably a bit too unpatriotic to be starting in the award season (and hence got moved to 2014 I guess). I never thought I would say that but Cotillard's presence (and she doesn't even have to act) is maybe a bit too strong for the character she is portraying and I could have done with a less dramatic resolution to the lover's quarrel. To be a great movie the whole thing would have needed a bit more emotional punch. Still, the story gets told which was was Gray's main intent and the ending shot looked great.

Well made, nicely acted, but the film somehow kept me at a distance. As somebody else has alluded, the parts are greater than the whole.
