I actually enjoyed the pacing of this movie. The horror aspects are mostly restrained for the first half of the movie, and I thought it highlighted a bit more of the allure someone like eve's character would feel without noticing the obvious evil all around.
I get that most people are there for the jumps and gore, but I thought it was a fun movie that really does a strong job of contrasting itself with the 50 Shades/Twilight brand of romance where the man is unhealthily obsessed with the female lead for no apparent reason and somehow isn't supposed to be a psychopath. Evie is a badass.
If anyone is an O negative please contact me I am losing blood fast.
Vampires?! Really?! what a crap movie and what the fuck was that thing about white men ?
All the pieces were there for a movie I'd love but somehow it didn't come together for me at all. Also the sound engineer should get a little nibble on the neck for dialogue that is utterly indecipherable punctuated by jump scares at like 60 fucking decibels louder. I suppose they had to scare with sound since most scenes were too dark to get scared by the visuals.
Not the worst movie in the horror/vampire genre by any means, but just so boring and such a disappointment when compared to the promise of the trailer.
Can be summarized in 3 word
Black Vampire Movie
Totally piece of crap. Waisted 30 min of my life.
It had promise at first but took way too long to get to the actual plot of the film. Wasn’t explained very well, kinda boring
I don't think this movie is nearly as bad as others have reviewed it. I agree with some of their points, but I think it is plenty interesting and well paced. It isn't a scare-fest and focuses more on the creepy vibe, which, unfortunately, is lost on many people. To each their own, I guess.
Anyway, I definitely would have liked to see this as an R rated film. There is too much focus, sometimes, to make a movie more accessible, but that leaves the movie feeling lacking.
Evie is not a very likeable character. She overreacts and has no self restraint. And, shocker, she's offended over a trifle. Sure, the butler is an asshole, but that is it. She also seems to be an entitled American that doesn't know when to STFU.
She does have some redeeming moments with Walt. She's much more palatable when he is around. It's also obvious she is a very caring person, so she gets a some credit there.
Walt, on the other hand, is a wonderful character. Not only is he well written (trite, but well written), Thomas Doherty has an amazing presence.
Victoria is is mostly poorly written, but she has her moments. Her comments to Lucy at the spa were both spot on and hysterical. Actually, that whole scene was well done.
I really like Nathalie Emmanuel, but she doesn't seem to be the right pick to be a lead opposite Thomas Doherty. At least not with the character as written. She has much more presence in the Fast and Furuous movies. I blame the writers and director for her underwhelming performance. She is definitely capable of more.
The Harkers, excellent reference. I wondered if Lucy was "the" Lucy. And the answer is "yes".
My biggest beef with this movie, and it's a big one, is that Evie didn't die. She 100% should have died when Dracula died.
All the potential, especially with that historical subtext, only to be disappointed by poor scene structure which created a pacing headache... ah well, at least the fight scene was fun, they should have ended it there, the final scene just made it all worse.
4/10 - for prosthetics, costume, set and prop design (they did a great job), and for the actors, who did their best with what they were given.
I can say I watched a film and that’s about it. They should have kept the secret till the last act, keeping the vampires a secret then at least it would be a surprise racist Dracula.
I’m going to put spoiler on but they already spoiled it.
I made it through the movie. Damn, that was rough. Not exactly sure where they were trying to go with this one. I honestly don't think they even watched this film after they edited the final version.
If you've got some time and like vampire movies give it a go I guess. If you've got important things to do like eat lunch or go to the bathroom I'd focus on that and just skip the movie.
Different things are for different people at different times. This specific movie is for my horror-loving self who doesn't mind watching two ridiculously beautiful people with incredible chemistry fall in lust amidst a slightly gothic backdrop. While it doesn't quite stick the landing, has no real surprises, and is a bit light on both the horror and romance, it's still a fun and sexy time.
This was a fun vampire movie with a ton of callbacks to the source material.
splendid acting, almost slow paced in the first hour but not in a boring way. don't expect it to be scary or creepy. good side characters. loveeeee evie, would def watch a second movie with her as a vampire
It was all there. The plot, the directing, even the acting. But the screenplay? How did the writers fuck up so back. What a waste of a great idea. Also the CGI at the end... Good lord.
Nothing happens during the first hour of the movie, I feel like I wasted my time with this.
A Get Out formula with some Dracula sprinkled into a Ready or Not clone. Watch the movies it ripped off instead.
Going in blind on my watch (other than the trailer) was certainly a good call. The trailer made it seem like a vampire movie, that was possibly like a Ready or Not type of vibe. This was much different. It was an enjoyable ride, even if it wasn’t particularly scary or offer anything unique to the table. It combined elements of James Wan horror, Get Out, and teenage romance/thrillers and the result was a good time and a quality retelling of a classic take. The setting they also totally nailed, as the creepy mansion is arguably the best part of the movie. This one likely won’t stand out on many best of lists for either horror or yearly lists, but it’s worth a watch!
Rating: 2.5/5 - 7/10 - Worth Watching
a forgettable and disappointing film, poorly written and too predictable to be interesting.
I may be unfair giving this only a 6, especially given I was enjoying it for the majority of the film. However, towards the end it became ridiculous and so obvious, delivering the usual basic crap.
I knew nothing of this film when I decided to watch and I felt it did really well with the storyline, build up of suspense and the paranormal scares. I was actually surprised when it revealed what was going on. After this point, it went quickly downhill, as though they rushed the ending without thought and finished with a ridiculous ending.
I would have loved an ending where the star doesn't escape, it would even make a good basis for another film.
After the reveal towards the end we find out that some of these entities (I won't reveal what they are) have been around for at least 500 years. Cunning, incredibly strong and evil enough to remain hidden and thrive all this time, yet a young female with zero skills, kills them off with almost no effort in a short time. Even if she had all the luck in the world behind her, I doubt she'd have been able to escape. It literally made the entities appear like they didn't have a brain between them. Completely and utterly spoiled the film.
The actors, acting, effects, etc were all fab. Literally a nonsensical ending!
The actor who played Walt... yummy :yum: lol.
It wasnt a good horror, or suspense even. But I give 7 for the chemistry between actors, even tho Evie was so naive a woman living in NY shouldn't, probably more so a black woman.
It was like a great depiction of Dracula for the very faint of heart xD
This took me like 5 evenings to finish because that's how boring it was.
Although the runtime doesn’t allow for much expansion, there’s still some fun to be had here. Overall, a better than dull watch.
Great buildup for a film that's essentially a romance novel for most of its runtime; and the leads are quite nice to look at. However, the American girl-power stuff just felt right out of a different film and ruined the finale with cheesy and unrelatably hokey, bad-modern-remake style dialogue and scripting, so that I wasn't really rooting for anyone by the end.
There are some attempts at drawing parallels with racsim, while also actually showing racsim, that didn't really have the impact that they could have had it been in a better film.
Making this PG-13, and awkwardly zooming and obscuring, and cutting shots too short to avoid having any actual nudity was just annoying and made me feel like I was watching a broadcast TV edit. If you want to make a "sizzling, sexy, blood-soaked horror story" then don't be intentionally cutting away from a normal shot to avoid showing what you're teasing.
It starts out really slow, then there are mild jump scares and suddenly, it is spoiled by vampires.. man this movie had SO much potential!
This doesn't live up to its potential unfortunately but its not a bad film overall. There are some creepy moments in this horror flick and they make the film worth watching for genre fans.
pretty common it didnt add anything new tbh
is actually really good ! I watched it without reading or seeing any trailer and I liked it ! a really good modern vampire movie :)
Oof the comments about this movie lol It wasn’t even bad. In fact I enjoyed it a lot. I think from the trailer we knew this was going to be about a woman learning the wild history of her new family. No mystery there. Very much like Ready or Not, another good movie. Loved the ending for Evie. Would watch a movie about her days hunting I’m assuming the 3 families. I mean he did tell us where each is located. She could possibly meet another vamp that sees the world she does.
The background image delivers the plot and the ending
The beginning looked like it could be an interesting movie with an interesting horror atmosphere, then unfortunately it turned into a farce
MEH! Nothing special. No matter how they tried to spin the storyline we have seen this before.
You won't miss anything by skipping this movie.
There is a moment one of them says: “Finally, this was getting boring!” Unfortunately it kept being boring.
It starts off good, but the ending is very fast-paced, and what happens is very convenient for Eve.
Dull, long, boring, avoid. Really poor.
RSVP to The Invitation, where RSVP = Really Stupid Vampire Picture.
Gothic horror for Twilight fans. For the real deal, try Crimson Peak.
I saw the unrated version so I'd imagine that's an immediate +1pt for this type of movie. I can't imagine enjoying a watered down PG-13 type affair for this.
Very good first half to set things up and then it gets silly of course but it was fun silly. Quite good for this type of affair honestly. Solid pacing, good acting, not too many cheap jump scares.. 6.6 for me.
i didn't see the movie yet but since when the horror movies are pg13!
It arrives a few years late in horror cinema as a platform for social commentary, although you can understand the intention of following the path of romantic horror that doesn't mind showing its references. The problem is that it doesn't do it with talent, it's as predictable as it is tiresome in the development, and it ends up being a mixture of films that have already explored the same path with greater success.
A mildly entertaining supernatural/vampire horror. I waited for the VOD release after knowing it's going to be the R-rated version, but the PG one is also available if that's what you prefer. The first two acts are so awful and cheesy not in a good way, reminding me of films like Twilight or any cringy vampire tv show. It's as generic as expected. The romance drama is the focus here and the horror is a side dish. While the setting and visuals look decent, it's just so bad at establishing things and the storyline which attempts to have a thrilling twist, evoke a shrug instead. There are attempts to unsettle or scare the audience but they're all laughable. Still, If I'm being honest, I was moderately entertained once I get used to its cheesiness. If you're a fan of Twilight or love spending your time reading Wattpad fanfics, you'll probably love this film.

Promising at first but really failed to deliver.
