The Meg 2018

I enjoyed the movie. If you thought it was going to be a period piece, you're wrong. If you thought it was going to be Oscar-bait, you're wrong. If you thought it was going to be a lean/mean action flick with fun set pieces and an entertaining plot line...that's what you get. One of the better movies of the summer, because while it plays serious enough, it knows it is here to put on a show and entertain us. In particular, I think Rainn Wilson does a good job of not going overboard while presenting an over the top type of character. Sit back and smile as the chaos fills the screen.

The Meg.
Alternative title: Everything wrong with contemporary Hollywood in 2 hours.
Alternative title II: This one’s for you, China.
Just shut up, Meg.

2/10

“Stop splashing! You have a life jacket on.” Lol. That girl is the single best thing about the movie.

loading replies

I liked a couple scenes... glad I didn't go to the theater to see it.

loading replies

Not as dumb as expected.

loading replies

It's largely crap, but it's decently made crap. If you're looking for some mindless action adventure to half pay attention to while you're doing the dishes or something, this fits the bill.

loading replies

Bad acting mixed with brainless action. The plot feels forced in many situations.

If it wasn't for Jason Statham it would get a 3.

loading replies

Don't get overally technical! Go in watch the movie and enjoy it! Jason Statham is great in his role, and a pretty good supporting staff, and I enjoyed the asshole boss role played by Rainn Wilson, works perfectly. A lot of fun action with the team, and the Giant Shark thrown in the mix. Honestly it was a lot of fun.

loading replies

And another virtual heart for that Dory reference and for Pipinn's plot.
Oh, yeah and for "Hey Mickey" in Thai.

loading replies

Another Legendary Pictures film made for China. Not worthy of the nearly two hours I wasted watching it.

Really bad movie, the only good thing about this movie is that it was so bad that it was funny!
I really don't get how this was made with Jason Statham as a pulling card, he needs to read the script, including actors, they did there best with what they were given.
The editing was not good so it played with the flow of the movie.
All i can say is Pipin rules!!

loading replies

Jaws + Jurassic Park + obvious cliches mix. Easy watching, no brainer.

"Meg versus man isn't a fight... it's a slaughter."

The Meg has some of that B-movie goodness in it's DNA but it doesn't always fully commit to it. It takes itself too seriously and there's not enough comedy and one-liners. Dialogue fits the B-movie format but it's so serious you just end up laughing at it. Everything mentionned is felt a lot in the first half, it's really a drag but the second half is more commited to doing something fun. So much fun, cool shark action sequences and good effects that I had totally forgotten the aforementioned criticisms. It's guilty pleasure and I like flashy objects. There's way too many generic characters and it's criminal how many of them get to live. Needed more kills.

For the sequel I want them to go crazy with it, be ridiculous all the way. More comedy and one-liners.

loading replies

If the movie starts with names of Chinese producer companies, it is bad.

loading replies

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."

Love the freaking end title card. "Fin". Great stuff!

Anyway, this was some good Saturday morning fun! We have Statham having fun, we have one of the cutest kids every in Sophia Cai, Li Bingbing is a great female lead, Ruby Rose doing her thing, Dwight Schrute wearing Air Max shoes, we have not 1 but 2 giant sharks, enjoyed the way the last shark bit the dust, we have the beach scene, humor and the puppy survived!

The Meg is a solid and fun B-movie with a big budget. Keep making films like these! And Jason Statham, keep starring in them!

loading replies

I mean, I was expecting it to be trashy, but not this much. Actually, I was a bit excited to see a shark movie with today's CGI; unfortunately it is worse than I thought and very stereotyped. You know that a movie is bad from the start when the only good actor in the entire cast is a child...

Also can Jason Statham become just a voice actor, please? He has like two expressions in total.

loading replies

A huge amount of changes were made from the plot in the original novel. From the color of the shark, the ethnicity of the cast, and the place in earth where it happens. It really is a popcorn movie made for a Chinese audience, fully intended to please them, and it really does so. That's why it is so bad. I'm glad Jason Statham had a nice pay check for this one.

loading replies

Saw this in 3D again on my beamer. That scene where the guy is running in the inflatable hamster wheel was hilarious. The way the cork pops out at you. We laughed so hard through the entire movie. Amazing entertainment.

loading replies

Much better than expected. Turn the brain off and enjoy!

loading replies

...You know...I have one simple request....and that is to have sharks..with frickin' laser beams..attached to their heads!!!

loading replies

More "Meh" than "Meg" and not even "The Jason" can save this movie that lacks any bite. Go watch The Shallows for a decent film that is "about a shark".

loading replies

Just another meh movie with highly predictable plot and clicheic sacrification. Acting was soo poor that we can even feel they aren't afraid of meg but they try soo hard to. Totally disappointed.

loading replies

This movie is just so .. blah! It took me three times to finally finish it. I felt every actor was playing a version of their character that was just so over the top. The two biggest highlights, the dog being ate .. and that fat kid asking to go swimming while eating his Popsicle. That kid was so fat, he should have been ate too. The movie would have gained one more point from me had he.

loading replies

I absolutely agree with everything Jordy said in his review. The acting was poor, the effects aren't up to scratch..sorry but Game of Thrones does better at effects then this film. The characters are stupid, they don't look genuinely scared that there's a MEG roaming about. Sorry and I'm going to say this but the ORIGINAL Deep Blue Sea, was miles better then this in terms of graphics and acting..that film was believable.

loading replies

Not the best shark movie I have seen. It was too slow to get going, but when the shark actually came on screen it was really tense.

loading replies

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it especially after reading so many negative reviews. It was action packed, yes it wasn't the best shark movie, however I enjoyed watching it. Yes it panders heavily to the Chinese market, at times a little too much, but it was still awesome. I had a great time and I would watch it again.

loading replies

I wouldn’t trust the bad rating on Rotten Tomatoes not your gut-instinct looking at the posters. This movie may not be the masterpiece of the year, but it sure packs some fun, and is not as one-dimensional as you might expect.

loading replies

Not much to like in this movie except a giant shark.

loading replies

A poor floppy specimen. 4/10
The Dolby Atmos Sound is brilliant 10/10
The 3D is a 5/10

It's Clearly been heavily cut - not just deaths. Even the regular scenes have conversations ending with odd reaction shots.

The 3D drowned:
The titles were great! Floaty bits in your face:
But they didn't bother doing it for the rest of the underwater scenes.
*1 thing hits you in the face in the 3rd act

Nice nod to Jaws with 'Pippin'

If you're expecting hilarious deaths from below go watch Piranha 3D (from a few years ago, not the sequel 3dd) it had brilliant 3D & is a whole lot of fun.

loading replies

Ugh. I LOVE Jason Statham and will see anything he's in. I even saw that trash heap Mechanic 2 in theaters. This was also no good. Generic, cheesy not in a fun way, and cliched. And the CGI oy oy oy. Look I know they're not gonna shoot with a real shark, etc, but I just don't feel any stakes knowing it's all CGI bullshit. I feel like MI6 has spoiled movies for me haha. I need every actor to go all Tom Cruise please!!

loading replies

I was looking forward to this movie too. But in the end it's just meh. Bad CGI and heavy pandering to the Chinese market. I watched Asylum's Megalodon right afterwards and that one is better.

loading replies

Terrific fun. An action movie that doesn't take itself at all seriously and knows exactly how ridiculous it is.

It's basically 4 big shark vs Jason Statham action movie sequences stitched together via some standard tropes (marine biologists have their work corrupted by a greedy billionaire).

If you hate (and love complaining about) films like Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid, Tremors and Deep Rising, then give it a miss and let the rest of us monster-movie fans enjoy this along with our beer and pizza!

I found the film reasonable, with interesting moments, including some epic ones. However, I felt that the film took itself too seriously, even though it had a script that wasn't that impressive and had some plot holes and strange moments.

loading replies

Four out of ten and honestly, better than i thought it would be. For almost 40% of the movie's runtime I thought maybe this wasn't going to be a bad movie. I thought maybe what if they were wrong and this turns out good. Then I was proven wrong. Just like I was confused when Morris did his big speech. I was so shook but I'll admit they got me on that one.

loading replies

A shark tale that delivers on the trashy fun, but disappoints the gore enthusiasts with a shortage of blood. It's like the ocean got a light snack instead of a feeding frenzy. 6 out of 10 – for the guilty pleasure of cheesy thrills, but we were left craving a bloodier bite.

loading replies

"There's a monster outside and it's watching us."

The book that this is based on his a horror story. It has tense moments and can actually feel scary at times. So when I saw this and it was more of a comedy I was a little disappointed. That being said, they did pretty good with that they had.

loading replies

You would think it is impossible to have a giant dinosaur shark vs Jason Statham be boring but they did it. And ripped off every shark movie doing it.

loading replies

I generally hate these ,,shark,, films. Couldn't give more than 6 stars. Typical production to watch with friends and have a laugh at the sillines of the movie. Average

loading replies

Dumb, loud, hyper-budgeted schlock with all the usual shark-feature tropes that you've come to expect. Check your brain at the door, watch $200M get spaffed onto film for 2 hours and try and enjoy the ride. Summer blockbuster movie to the core, with the lacking narrative and overt use of CGI to boot. Not bad, not great, just middling spectacle cinema.

loading replies

Actually better than I expected

loading replies

"The Meg" is a big-budget blockbuster about big killer sharks that, despite decent effects, ultimately lacks bite. The film is just too generic and bloodless to be really fun. Except for Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson, none of the actors seem to know what kind of movie they are in. Statham's chemistry with co-star Li Bingbing, meanwhile, is nonexistent. Overall, the shark spectacle is watchable but pretty boring at the same time. The camp factor is too low, and the Megalodon is too sparsely seen. Except for a few moments towards the end, it all left me cold. A tone similar to that of "Piranha 3D" would have undoubtedly benefited the film.

loading replies

This movie is not realistic. It would have been impossible for the dog to survive

loading replies

Meg changes sizes more times during the movie than Jason changes beer bottle

loading replies

I really like this. Although when I watched it the second time with the family I did notice some of the jokes that are quite bad.
The shark more than makes up for it. Some fun shark action!

loading replies

I've watched the Meg a bunch of times (it's part of a group of movies i watch when I've got nothing to watch and need time fillers), and I've re-watched the Office several times too... so how did it take me this long to realize the douchebag investor is Dwight! Oyyy :type_4:‍♀

loading replies

What isn't horrible in this movie? The humor falls flat at every 'joke', the acting feels robotic, the CG is terrible and the worst offence of all; it's so clearly a movie made to shill to a Chinese market, even referring to Taiwan as simply 'Taipei' at one point. I would only recommend you watch this if you want to turn your brain off.

loading replies

A kill time movie, not the greatest, bad CG

loading replies

The "you left them to die" remarks at the start of the movie annoyed me so much :grimacing: They were false, they were cringe, they were absolutely unnecessary for the story. Just outright bad writing that. Luckily she literally apologized for that

Beyond that a typical fire and forget stereotypical Hollywood movie. Looks well enough. A list actors with decent performances too but there's not much there beyond that.

Best bit basically was "what happened to your hair?" The trailer sums it up, if you're into that then watch it, if you're not then you didn't miss anything either.

loading replies

Wasn't there supposed to be a Meg 2??

loading replies

It's Shark Horror. So don't expect too much. However, I kinda liked it, it was a nice enough/distracting watch on a chill evening during quarantine.

loading replies

The movie is cool to pass the time and entertain with your girlfriend or boyfriend or group of friends. But it's not something you'll be impressed, especially if you're used to Jason Statham's (the mechanic) movie styles

loading replies

Jason Statham takes on a Megalodon in the fun and exciting B-movie The Meg. While exploring a trench in the China Sea a group of researchers accidentally release a prehistoric shark known as a megalodon, which then attacks the research station and begins to feed. Statham is in top form, doing some incredible action scenes, and delivering some good comedy bits. And the special effects are quite impressive, though there are a few cheesy CGI shots. Still, the set and creature designs are pretty cool, with a kind of retro sci-fi look. Also, the score does a great job at heightening the suspense and intensity of the shark attacks. Extraordinarily entertaining, The Meg is a thrilling adventure into the darkest reaches if the sea.

loading replies

My first thought was that I'm pretty sure this is going to be another bad movie. You know those kinds like Sharknado? But then I was impressed with the SFX. The CGI made this movie more bearable because the acting was pretty flat. I think without Jason Statham in this movie, this would have been a total flop. I have also been noticing brit + chinese movie collabs like Pacific Rim: Uprising and this one. I guess it's cheaper to have the movie edited in China? idk.

loading replies

Great story?!?
Not even close...

Great acting?!?
Mmm....no!

Great effects?!?
Good enough...

Entertaining?!?
Surprisingly...YES!!!

The Meg is not a movie you will remember tomorrow...except for the great and mindless fun it was. Don't watch this and expect great art. Watch it and enjoy a couple of hours of escape from reality.

Recommended for anyone that just needs something to take their mind off the daily grind.

loading replies

i loved this movie, just go out there expecting a shark mockumentary!

loading replies

Everything you expect out of a shark movie is here. The film delivers on that summer-fun promise, while also exceeding expectations in terms of action and set-pieces. There are funny moments, mostly in the dialogue, and Jason Statham saves the film from drowning in the deep blue sea. Unfortunately the production does not dare to go further and remains at times as a B movie. "The Meg" is one of the summer's most fun, most mindless blockbusters that you love to hate. The movie is certainly no "Jaws" but thanks to a diverse cast of characters you can actually care about and some well-placed action scenes, "The Meg" is much better than it ever had any right to be. Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

loading replies

JAWS 2019 FEAT JASON STATHAM

loading replies

Not only is this a poor man's Jaws, it's also a poor man's Sharknado! With better effects, likeable characters, and a lead not played by Jason Statham, this might have been okay. As it is, this is a weak summer schlockbuster, with very little merit. Waterlogged in nearly every department.

loading replies

It is typical of an action movie -- a lot of eye candy but the characters are two-dimensional and the story is shallow and lacks any credibility. But the eye candy was indeed good (including Li Bingbing and Ruby Rose), there were some pretty funny lines, and Rainn Wilson stole nearly every scene in which he appeared, so it was somewhat enjoyable.

loading replies

Eye-rolling good fun. Not great, but not as bad as you expect either.

loading replies

If you wanna see a fun and exciting movie, than that's what you'll get with The Meg. Don't expect too much and it's fine.

loading replies

Oof. For an action movie, this really had no action. There's basically 3 main action scenes, and the other 100 minutes seem very slow, and unneeded.

The casting seems fine for what it is, and no one felt super out of place. If you have seen all the movie posters for this movie, than you'll also be sad of a pretty major (yet relatively obvious) spoiler for the storyline of the movie.

If you're looking for an okay action shark movie, this is a good fit but this is definitely one of the skippable movies of 2018.

Loads of fun. There's a bunch of actually thrilling set pieces and quite a few likeable characters. It's a great B-Movie with a higher budget. The Marianas Trench is something that really needs to be explored more in film.

Meg looks kinda real and believable I guess, action is predictable but then thats not really what this movie is about. It must be comedy too, I was laughing as much as shocked!

Statham just has to get his shirt off in any movie he's in, goodness knows how much time that guy spends in a gym or digesting steroids

China had some money to spend.. I'm not being racist.. at all.. But most of the chinese cast didnt' do good. Lots of overacting.. (asian cinema trademark) "forced" reactions..

Plot is full of holes.. expected.. but so many!!!!

For a AAA movie.. the CG was a low budget..

And it clearly was chopped .. a lot, there are a lot of dialogues that sound cut, some scenes that you can tell were cut short, so editing is kind of all over the place.

meeh movie, but popcorn factor is ok..

Definitely Deep Blue Sea inspired some scenes here. It was a decent movie tbh. Fun to watch ofc!

This is the Michael Jordan of suck. Absolutely useless and without soul. How much money did the Chinese producers pump into this to have their actors in it? Pet peeve of mine, people speaking with super heavy accents yet flaunting perfect Oxford grammar. That doesn’t make any sense! Not that I expect a whole lot of sense in a movie like this, but at least make the people seem real.

Bad bad bad. Lousy acting. Jason Statham just can't act and the rest are wooden and unbelievable too. These people are supposed to be scientists but most characters are complete morons. Made for the Chinese market.

Probably would have been better without Jason Statham. He isn’t bad but with him it feels like an realistic action B-Movie. With an action star versus a giant shark. It makes it more predictable since you know who will win.
Still, it’s fun at times.

I really enjoyed this film.
You shouldn't go in with high expectations and let this movie entertain you and oooh it will!

loading replies

I expected a dumb, fun movie but i'm still left relatively disappointed. There were a few fun jokes here and there, but the clichés (and there were a lot of them!) were played completely straight. Instead of making me laugh, they made me groan.
Jason Statham is always an instant +1 for any movie he's in for me, but the rest of the cast is wildly varying. DJ is a fun character, Jack (Rainn Wilson's character) is a bit of an un-entertaining character but he's relatively well acted. Suyin's character had a very weird, stilted delivery of most lines.

The CG was very off at times too. The shark looks fine, but any effects that are not underwater are full-on B-movie. The helicopter in the beginning and a moment where cranes fell off a boat in particular had me thinking 'why am I watching this in a theater'.
Entertaining but eh.

loading replies

Had more action than I'd expected, which was a good thing, but too much of it happened in the middle of the ocean. Want to impress me? Set the entire film on a crowded beach.
