Beautiful graphics and aesthetics but overall not very exciting. Mostly nothing happening.
Neither bad nor good. The space scenes are fine. Clooney is acting ok but the story is missing a lot in whole. Actually all of the story is a space ship had gone to Jupiter's newly discovered moon to check it and they are turning back to earth. But the earth is f*ucked up with global disaster. One guy, Clooney is at the artic having illusions of his daughter which we understand at the end (!), trying to reach that ship to warn them to go back.
I watched it for the sake of Clooney and some space views. That's all. Other than that, it is another ordinary movie...
Interesting concept, but a bit too much overcomplicated with that Iris.
Nothing surprised me. I mean NOTHING.
Tries to be something it doesn't have the chops to be. You'll see the "twist" coming from a mile away and the only thing that'll keep you watching will never get enough screen time. The space ship segments would have made for an interesting movie, but no. The Earth dying would have made for an interesting movie, but no. Instead, you get to watch George coughing.
The opening lines of his character are an eye roll and it doesn't get better as the movie goes along. Looks pretty, tho.
Anyone: speaks
This movie: slow orchestral music
The soundtrack is off way too much. Tried to get through The Midnight Sky but I turned it off about halfway into the movie. It is so dull. I actually can’t find one redeemable quality about this besides some stunning photography. The movie starts nowhere, goes nowhere, with characters you don't care about, it is just a whole lot of nothing. I can't believe it cost 100$ million, I think this is a money funnelling scheme .
Just because a film has great special effects and some nice landscape cinematography, doesn't make it good.
WTF even Red Bull couldn’t keep me awake for this snooze fest
Nearly excellent but a little frustratingly not quite there. Some beautiful moments, and I love the production design of the spaceship.
It felt to me that there were too many moments signposted in advanced, and some sightly uncertain points where the film didn't quite know what audience it was catering for.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but felt it could have been much better
Really poor storytelling, Clooney's part was so cliché, you knew exactly what will happen with him in the first moment.
The part with the spaceship could have been awesome, but sadly it fell really flat - first the acting was bad, and secondly the moment the accident happened everything went worse. I mean you want to tell me that there's no doctor on a spaceship, and there's only one person who knows how is a wound supposed to be handled? Because I'm not a doctor, but putting only pressure on it and think that will be enough is just stupid.
So all in all this was not a great movie, expected so much better than this, I'm disappointed.
I have to write a min of 5 words but I could sum it up in one. Meh!
Beautifully filmed, ponderously slow. There’s not much more to say than that, which is an indictment in itself.
What an incredibly depressing and unsatisfying story. What’s the point of bothering to go back to Jupiter? So you can give birth to some child destined to live and die alone with no hope to escape? Is this some artsy take on the futility of life?
While beautiful to look at during most shots, The Midnight Sky turns out to be some of the most boring, formulaic storytelling I've seen this year. Nothing is new here, and everything is telegraphed before it happens. It drags it's heels almost 20 minutes too long, with nothing paying off from the time investment. If you need something to test out your new 4K TV, this isn't a bad showcase, just don't expect anything engaging narratively.
The greater plot lacks complexity and any form of exciting details.
So they used incredibly much screen time for pointless fillers, most them desperately trying to enrich the movie with emotions by action scenes. And every single one of them is a subpar snorefest.
The movie has some emotional moments and good chemistry between some actors.
But these few moments aren't enough to safe this trainwreck. This movie could have been cut down to 5 or 6 minutes and it would probably provide better entertainment.
I liked this. The acting was everything you would expect from Class A professionals. The story was moving. There were times when the pace was rather laboured but there was great beauty in the film that made the lulls worth it. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10 [Near Future Drama]
One of the most depressing films I have ever seen in my entire life. I do not recommend this one to anyone emotionally struggling during the pandemic. Awful, awful ending.
One Hundred Million Dollar.
That's a lot of money to make a movie that does about nothing. Technically this is really good. It looks great but it's an empty vessel.
There are no surprises in this movie. None ! If you don't see the twists at the end coming from a mile away you're not paying attention (which I could forgive) or have never seen anything similar.
There isn't even hope in the story. Everyone on Earth is dead. Augustine will die, the two astronauts going back to earth will die. And in a best case scenario the couple on the ship will get back to K23, or what the designation was. And after living for who knows how long, they will die, too. Leaving their daughter and possible siblings behind to ....., die. Right ! There will be no new Earth as you can not rebuild a civilization with two people. That's about it. Mankind's dead. And in case I didn't miss it, they didn't really showed why.
There was no emotional investment on my part, I stopped the movie five times and when it was running I was looking for stuff on ebay. The story never got to take me with it. And the movie fades into nothingness.
What's the point ?
If you like movies with resolutions, this movie is not it.
This is not a great movie - but it is good and enjoyable. Once again, since this is still 2020 and there has been a meager selection of decent new movies to watch - this was a breath of fresh air.
Although you do have to check your brain at the coat-check before watching this as there are a few (maybe several) unbelievable things that occur that simply are not survivable and yet somehow...
Sadly (and most annoyingly), we never actually find out what destroys the earth.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
I went in expecting it to be a disaster and was positively surprised, so maybe that's the key here.
It has a slow pacing, for sure, but by the end it fits the story perfectly, so people that just want to see action or explosions might want to sit this one out.
The one loose end that bothers me a little was the one set at the beginning, for the deliberate misdirection. Not because of said misdirection but because it just feels wrong that they'd mention "the rest of the world" and then never bring up any more details about it like what happened in the first place to precipitate the expedition, how did it get so bad within the 2 years that the expedition took place or what year is it?
Quite an average movie. I really expected more from it. It‘s not bad though. The cinematography and the CGI of the spaceship is great but the story just lacks in a lot of ways.
It's a good-looking film but it fails to reach full liftoff on both the ground and in space. Far from a failure, however, but I expected something better.
Started kinda slow but picked up speed after a while.. not a running speed just a little fast walk.
Not an action packed movie but plenty of stuff going on to keep you intrigued.
Nice story, good ending even if it was cliched - what other option would be logical in that situation?
Good time waster
Solid 8.5/10
This feels like two half-baked movies that got stitched together with a weak premise to deliver a very simplistic message, and it made for a pretty mediocre movie, at least in terms of storytelling.
So the premise is good. The acting is great. The story is decent. But the day-night cycle in the arctic is pissing me off. WTF? At what time of the year does the arctic circle have regular bright days and dark nights in 24-hour cycles? Never! Also, what spacecraft can't triangulate itself based on the stars? Asinine!
The amount of crap they run into in space is redonkulous. It is bad enough to see asteroid fields in Star Wars and other shows/movies when the density is about 100,000 to 1,000,000 times less. Empty space is just that; empty. Not saying there isn't the stray asteroid the size of a grain of sand, but the sort of material Aether runs into would be easily visible by an optical telescope, let alone a radio wave/microwave telescope. This is how we see comets after all. They should know all the comets tracked within the solar system up to 3 weeks ago. It would be exceedingly rare to hit one unobserved comet on their trip. Even more so to encounter two.
The lack of understanding of communication times is quite pathetic. I mean, who hasn't heard about the 8 minutes between the Sun and Earth. These distances are several times that based on the graphics. At least 50 to 75 percent of the distance to Jupiter, which has a delay of over 40 minutes. I would expect 2049 to have data dumps instead of live communication. We have it today. Record what you want to transmit and when you want to transmit it and the number of times to transmit it. It is that easy. You can then wait for a response or listen to a recording later. Any computerized facility should be able to loop a warning on broadcast and keep the antenna pointed where you want it.
On the upside, you know some terrible $#!+ happened from the get-go, so the rest of the story is well laid out to let you experience the gravitas of the situation. We know from the flashbacks that Augustine is not a people person and is just waiting out his time to die, but isn't running towards death, either. With Iris, there is a kink in his plan. Trying to save the crew of Aether is the basic premise, but it is Augustine's journey that is the story.
Despite the crap science, this is a fairly good movie. In fact, it is a powerful story if you can set aside your shallowness and neediness and just experience it. The art of storytelling at its best.
It's not as bad as others have made it to be. It is pretty to watch, and has a very good storyline. Only two things really bothered me: (1) the "Hollywood" behavior of the astronauts, also described by others. They scramble incautiously outward on their EVA, then fall into slo-mo on their return; they goof around on EVA, cluttering their comms with a song(?!?!?!); and to avoid spoilers, I'll just say they are horrible at personnel allocation/assignment/prioritization. (2) The pacing of the editing is just plain awful. The only thing which makes this film viewable is Netflix's new speed control. This film is just fine with judicious use of 1.25x and 1.5x playback.
I haven't read the book but it's a good movie to enjoy at home,i love sci-fi & space movies but if this were to be released in theaters it would have bombed.actually if it weren't for the great original score from Alexandre Desplat;i may have fallen sleep while watching.. I'm giving it 8 for the visual, score and seeing Falicity Jones.
A beautiful and somber film about the importance of human connection, of brotherhood in the midst of desolation.
From George Clooney comes the dystopian sci-fi thriller The Midnight Sky. Based on a novel, the story follows a scientist who must make a dangerous trek to a radio station in order to contact a returning spaceship and warn them that Earth has suffered an ecological catastrophe; meanwhile the ship suffers significant damage during their journey and the crew has to attempt repairs. Featuring Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, and Caoilinn Springall (in addition to Clooney), the film has a pretty solid cast; yet it’s newcomer Caoilinn Springall who stands out the most, having tremendous screen-presence and good chemistry with Clooney. Also, the special effects and sets designs are rather impressive. As is the score, which complements the material remarkable well and sets the right tone. Incredibly compelling, The Midnight Sky is an exciting space odyssey.
I watched it at 1.25x on Netflix and it was still very slow.
There's a qtwist at the end that doehs not pay off.
The two sides of the story seem disjointed and neither pack the emotional point they should.
Riddled with flaws, slow and uninvolving overall. All that said, it isn't as bad as reviews would tell you because of one simple fact - it's what Clooney does... The American, Solaris, Good Night Gooad Luck, Ides of March, Clayton... They're all that devoid-of-emotion droll dull character films with next to no script.
5.5/10
Didnt see the end twist coming.
Beautiful sad movie.
Loved it.
Stopped watching this at the first half an hour. Too slow and you already can imagine where all this is leading. In one word BORING
[Netflix] A film that feels apathetic in its development, that fails to capture interest in either of its two narrative sections. There are improper uses of characters (the girl) that only have an explanatory, discursive function. There are action scenes that seem like a concession to viewers who expect there to be such scenes in "space" movies. But above all there is an erratic path to a non-existent goal.
Some books weren't made to be movies
On the edge of being too fringe for me.
Predictable story which didn't seem to explain anything, unless I missed it, about why the Earth was damaged and Billions had perished. perhaps I dozed off for that bit of the dialogue [sorry!]
Very scenic film with what is I guess a positive ending - already slow moving, but, it would have been nice to see that they made their second journey successfully; I guess that would have required a film the length of Cleopatra!
A whole lot of nothing.
If it weren’t for the little twist at the end, I’d have given this a Meh rating.
Disappointed and boring, couldn't connect to the movie.
Could have been so much more. The Arctic held out promise. 70% there 30% for the rest. Incredible sets and Jack London on a mission. Too bad it got caught up in a meaningless Kubrick homage. Love you George but it just had no there there.
Bored, Bored And Bored in stupid movies
The movie was pretty bad and disappointing. The cast of the spaceship wasn't convincing at all and I wasn't emotionally attached to any of the characters.
And the screenwriter, who thinks that letting the main character swim in polar water is a cool idea, should be fired on the spot.
Interesting movie. Everything is very subtle, nothing is thrown in your face and pushed through your throat. No emotional rollercoaster crap. There's not that much going on but that does emphasise what it's about. There are very little or no distractions. Again, the point of the movie is emphasised because of that and I think it was a good choice to make the movie the way it's made.
It's a slow movie and I really enjoyed it a lot. I found the movie had a good balance between drama and scifi, yes both are equally respected imo. In fact the way I see it both are inseperable in this movie. Can recommend for when you want to have a chill ;-) movie to watch and obviously if you're into scifi.
Nice pictures but the story is boring. Too slow to really be entertaining it doesn't have real inovative ideas to be really an interesting experience. Just an average SF movie that remains watchable but you will forget it quickly despite all the good sides. Only for SF fans
I can't say that I understand the hate for this film. I found the story to be interesting and touching, and while it wasn't the best of its kind, it was still a strong effort by all involved. I felt that young Caoilinn Springall was particularly good in this, especially in a role, where she had few lines and had to emote through her facial expressions and actions. It was quite impressive an impressive feat from such a young actor. I will admit that partway through the film, it occurred to me that Iris might have been a figment of Augustine's imagination, but I didn't see the ending as it unfolded. All in all, I felt that this film was worth a watch.
Midnight Sky is an excellent film that dives into themes of hope and survival, exploring the fragility of human existence. George Clooney delivers a solid performance and the cinematography is stunning. The film masterfully blends science fiction and human drama to create a thought-provoking and moving story. Midnight Sky will leave you with a renewed appreciation for the power of hope and human connection in the face of adversity.
I will rate this movie We are the only two now/10
I feel like what they did was really good. But they didn't really do anything.
in the film there are a couple of opportunities where to give a much greater dramatic weight and to take much more interesting options. However it stays the easy way.
Mediocre in all respects except for the photography. Unrealistic action acting, and some erratic scene changes. The music does nothing for the film.
Altogether far too long and slow. Clooney's poor acting and directing detracts from what was potentially a good story.
To anyone wondering what happened in the first place I suggest: look out of the window.
Well, nothing half and nothing whole.
An aging George Clooney who looks pretty broken up and has not fully worked out his role or brought it over. The twist at the end with his daughter was clear to me from about halfway through the film, so some scenes have become illogical or incomprehensible. What has been staged quite well are the outdoor shots in space, as well as the one scene with the blood in weightlessness. You can watch it, but otherwise not expect too much and it is far from being a science fiction highlight or classic.
The movie feels like asif you drop in, in the middle of a story, perhaps some series tv show where you missed the first two (or more) episodes and you start watching the final episode of the season.
Overal a well made and beautifuly shot film. But slow, drama and just too predictable. There must have been much more to work with in the source material.
This could have been a great action movie, or a compelling scifi drama.
Now it falls short on both.
Dear George Clooney
I love you, but you could have spent two extra pennies on screenwriters and less dog actors.
A T E R R I B I L E film
Could've been better. Long 2 hours.
Just watch Interstellar instead. Better in every aspect.
I wanted to like this more than I ended up doing. The book is good, but (apparently) doesn't translate all that well to film. A lot of creative license was also taken in ways I wasn't a huge fan of. I didn't hate the film, but I doubt I'll ever want to watch it again, either.
The movie is both good and bad. The biggest con for me is how depressing it is. Acting is great, especially Clooney, the storytelling leaves a lot of gaps for the viewer to filll in or just purposefully for the suspense. Overall it's a nice experience, but is surely likes to toy with your emotions. It's the kind of movie that either bores you to death or makes you tear up, depending on your mood.
Just when I think Hollywood could not possibly shit out anything worse lately they say "hold our beer" I mean this movie is complete DOG SHIT from start to finish! its just typical SJW virtue signaling garbage where yet ANOTHER interracial couple will have a baby and that's the beginning of the new human race....TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The only good thing about this disastrous project is the production design. The rest (direction, script, acting and even special effects) is a mess. Hey Razzies, here's George Clooney as a great candidate for the "Worst Director" category.
Made me cry which isn't a high bar when they pull out well done cinematics and a proper score. Looking back my rating has systematically dropped as the beauty wore off -- none of the emotional punches hit long-term. A good way to waste 118 minutes, and I don't regret it, but not something that will stick with you beyond a few striking visuals.
Sad, dreary.well made but sad.
K23.... Otherwise known as Planet Inbreed.....
A lot of things are soooo wrong.
You will not survive in those waters.... Or out of those waters with wet clothing.
I am sailor and my crew is (minimum) 27...on a spaceship......only 5....oh wait 2?
No not really my cup of tea let's say...
So Clooney goes from point A to B. Aether goes from point A to B and back to A. Some dialogue happens, completely inconsequential to the events taking place. So in summary nothing happens for 2 hours. Looks nice tho, get some actual writers next time and maybe you have something Georgie boy.
Absolutely beautiful and stunning movie. Unfortunately that's about it.
I gave it 6/10 because it was fair, not good but not bad, just fair.
My wife referred to it as "a pointless film, nothing happened, and why would you get pregnant in space if you know you're going to be away for so long ".
Gave up after 30 mins
More like Intersnooze
My interest for this movie died so quickly and yet I was only 20 minutes in. Everything on a technical and performances side were all decent, but man this was painful to get through.
I like George Clooney a lot, but it gives me great sadness to say that 'The Midnight Sky' is another directorial bomb from Mr. Clooney.
Just another Netflix borefest with a famous watch bait.
Just another Netflix borefest with a famous watchbait.
Was hoping it was just Clooney struggling to find his way to his destination. I don't mind the kid. Just the rest on the space station is uninteresting.
Edit: They just used a timpani for a jumpscare! Hahahaha
I guess George Clooney has finally hit the age where he can’t play a young and old version of the same character. lol. Must’ve been a brutal realization. It was ok .. a bit obvious.
Again a boring slow movie without any story or consistence. I stop to watch at 40min, which is a lot !!!
my god it is a very glimpse movie but pretty much waste of time
Boring movie, dont waste your time
better movie than critics are saying. then again critics are just failed jealous wanna be movie makers. well worth the watch with some good twists.
1word 2words 3words 4words
So?
I Fell a sleep. Tried to give it chance. gave it a fair 6
OK story but it was a lot like the movie gravity in combination with some boat movie I saw a while back. The ending was done nicely. Time and life go on even though everything is gone.
This was an ok movie, the pacing was pretty slow here.

What an utter bunch of crap! One father and the daughter he never really met are among a few survivors of a global catastrophy, where billions of people died. Yeah, riiiiiight...
