I wanted to care about this movie. The story is obviously one that should be told, and it certainly felt deeply personal to the narrator. However, I could barely keep an eye open. It was very sleepy and felt very much like homework. I felt guilty being so bored by such a tragic series of events, but it is what it is. I definitely wouldn't mind learning more about this setting though.
The director ran out of photos, I ran out of something that truly touching and revived the original form of storytelling that Panh himself invented.
