After have played the Wolf Man and Frankenstein, Lon Chaney Jr. pull’s a hat trick, taking on a third Universal Monster in The Mummy’s Tomb. Thirty years after having failed to stop archeologist Steve Banning from discovering the tomb of Princess Ananka, the newly appointed high priest of Karnak takes the mummy to America to get revenge on Banning and his family. Unfortunately the film follows the classic horror sequel trope of killing off the survivors of the previous film; which insults the viewer and kills any goodwill it had carried over. But worse than any of that is the dirt done to Chaney, putting him in this nothing role where he has no lines and his face is wrapped up in bandages. Still, notwithstanding, Chaney’s portrayal of the mummy is rather frightening at times, and some of the kills/attack scenes are disturbing. Yet while it delivers a few scares, The Mummy’s Tomb is a disappointing film that seems haphazardly thrown together.
