The Musketeer 2001

Having never read the Alexandre Dumas novel, I use The Three Musketeers from 1993 as my standard. This version does not measure up. It opens nearly identical with us getting the back story to why d'Artagnan is so driven to become a musketeer. I have to say that Chambers did a much better job as our swashbuckling hero here than Chris O'Donnell. The revamped fight scenes with the Jackie Chan stlye theatrics played out well and were nicely shot, not overly dark. The problem with this production is the three musketeers themselves. They were horribly boring and lame. I know it is tough to match up with the performance of Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Oliver Platt but the only plus for this group was they spoke with an accent, which was tough to understand at times. Mena Suvari and her gimongous eyes didn't quite fit in here either.
