So one night I got drunk with a few friends and not wanting to drive I stayed at his house. After the drinking was done we all sat down and watched The Night Before on his DVR. Whilst being drunk I thought this movie was very funny and entertaining. Then we woke up the next morning......not remembering what happened during the movie we all decided to watch it again. By the time it ended all of us laughed maybe once while sober. Jesus Christ this movie is not very good.
A forgetful holiday themed comedy. It has it's moments, but as a whole it comes up short. It is overly raunchy at times and is just not very funny. In conclusion it is pretty much a drug movie filled with big names, but not big laughs.
I am getting tired of Rogen's stoner comedies, this is one film that will not be a Christmas classic.
New rule to self - ignore all comedies starring Seth Rogen. Man, that was an awful movie.
6,5/10
Nothing special but way better than I expected
Fan of all the cast but it was a bit let down. Boring strange and not funny as you thought it will be
One of the best Christmas movies of all time. The Night Before has crude, over the top comedy, that will have you laughing from start to end. Join the journey of 3 friends trying to make it to The Nutcracker Ball. Tons of cameos, action, and jokes will make this one of your favorites. ENJOY!
joseph gordon levitt is the most versatile actor of our generation i don’t even care i am right
Little Xmas Eve rewatch almost 7 yrs on and I forgot how amazing Mikey Shans Mr. Green was. Best part of the movie. Great chemistry and cheesy fun. Some parts missed, but this was a well done buddy xmas dramedy. 7.4
To start, Seth Rogen is doing all the heavy lifting here, without him there would not be a movie. I like what The Night Before has to say, but Joseph cannot handle the lead role in a comedy like this, and Anthony was miscast. Hell, some of the supporting actors brought move laughs.
The movie seems like it is wanting to land somewhere in the realm of The Hangover or A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, but can't balance the humor with the more serious tones throughout. If this had simply been a cute romcom about JGL trying to win back Lizzy Caplan, I think it would have worked, trouble is it wanted to pack in more story than was necessary. On the other hand, if this had been a typical comedy with Seth as the lead, and two comedic actors - in his weight class - costarring, this would have been amazing.
I can't say I disliked this, but the ending left me feeling nothing more than "oh, okay, it's over now." I'll probably watch this again, but it will only be for Seth's parts - which I was literally laughing out loud during.
the first half of the movie was entertaining but after that ive got bored with the seth rogen humor. pineapple express was way funnier.
For me, a grumpy old man, this story seems as old as the hills. The characters are on the cusp of serious adulthood, children, a professional career, a professional athlete on top of his game and of course the one that cannot change, is stuck yearning for his youthful exuberance. Throw in a ballsed up relationship get in Gordon-Levitt and you have so far, so familiar. Then tip in a legendary party that the trio always wanted to get to but just could not and this neighbour is very familiar. You will not get lost let us just say.
Levine and his fellow scriptwriters change it up a bit by setting our events over Christmas and giving Gordon-Levitt a very sad back story to garner sympathy for his behaviour and motivation but this is all still served on top of the gross-out man-babies we are used to.
The setting of Christmas gives the makers a chance to play with some familiar themes and stories and weave them into the procedures. It is fun spotting them but I do feel these cute little hat tips are not enough to hold it all together and certainly not enough to elevate this tale above the others of its type.
As an audience we are asked to accept the usual comedic behaviour that in a normal life would have you calling the police or at the least not having these people as friends. Ethan steals the tickets from a jacket he is coat-checking in – this is a despicable hat and no excuse because he does not like this job. Seth Roget goes potty insane over the fact he is having a baby. Most people probably get worried, get that stressed over this impending responsibility but, and I fully realise this is a comedy, the over-the-top response to this by Rogen left me cold and just thinking his character was an extreme dickhead. He is an ex ‘pot-head’ (again Seth really?) so his paranoia could be explained by this but for me it just was not that funny a portrayal.
In fact being honest the three main characters are selfish idiots who you would run a mile from. The only strength they have is their strong friendship and as per usual the strong women in their lives who, with the exception of the mother-figure, would not have stuck around for so long. I found it unfathomable why any of them would have anything to do with them but hey-ho.
Rogen, Gordon-Levitt and Mackie give solid and dependable performances whilst hardly pushing any envelopes or stretching themselves, safe and sound. Even Michael Shannon as the initially menacing Mr.Green could be said to be playing against type but not really.
The women in the film Jillian Bell, Lizzy Caplan and Lorraine Toussaint get to play long-suffering, patient, loving and loyal to people who do not deserve it – again. Seemingly the most popular role you will get offered.
Night Before breaks no new ground and is not even top-notch in its genre, it is slap bang in the middle. It is fun and if you are a film buff and it does have competent and safe acting but it really is disappointingly familiar. As I watched it I was annoyed by it as much as I was entertained. There was just enough to keep me watching. I have to say I could not recommend Night After and will never watch it again.
There was a lot of talent involved but I really do wish they would try something different with this type of film and characters. We can but hope.
Also in these type of films why is the party the lamest direst event that you would not want to go to, that in this event that gets an unlikely Miley Cyrus promotional thrust into the middle of it. Corny, badly acted and unnecessary
Like barf from someone who ate too much Christmas pudding, The Night Before is an inconsistent mess of random chunks with a couple funny bits in the mix.
As usual, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the best part and Michael Shannon is so good it's pungent (OK, the analogy stopped before this paragraph).
"She Home Alone'd me!"
I need to watch more holiday movies this month and this randomly popped up on my feed. I don't know why I didn't watch this in theaters because it was pretty funny. You can tell a lot of the jokes were improvised on the spot (which I love) and Michael Shannon might be my favorite thing about it.
I don’t get all the hate for this movie. I thought it was a worthy effort. Everyone is expecting a new Christmas Vacation or Home Alone I guess with this cast. It’s obviously not but I still enjoyed it.
Funny.
'The Night Before' makes for very amusing viewing, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie are great together, I like all three actors individually and as a trio they are just as terrific - all give entertaining performances.
Rogen plays the most obvious role for him yet absolutely nails it, Gordon-Levitt is probably the weaker of the three but is still pleasant to watch - as is Mackie. The casting is top notch, with supports like Michael Shannon and Tracy Morgan. There are other noteworthy faces involved too, like Ilana Glazer and Lorraine Toussaint.
The plot isn't anything crazy or distinctive, yet still feels suitably fresh for the vast majority. I will say, though, the film does hit a bit of a wall at around the midway point, but thankfully picks up almost immediately - thanks to a great scene with a couple of fun cameos.
An enjoyable film. It's ridiculous, but they make it work. Recommended.
For better or worse this movie is exactly what you expected it to be. Nothing terrible but nothing that made you think about it three minutes after it ended. At different times I wished that Joseph-Gordon-Levitt, Lizzy Caplan and (the always incredible) Michael Shannon would have just gone off and made a movie of their own.

Such a great Christmas party movie. Great to have a few drinks with! Laugh out loud funny, which is rare for me now days
Full of holiday cheer, The Night Before is a wacky comedy that’s out of control (but not always in a good way). The film follows three friends as they chase after an elusive Christmas Eve party called the Nutcracker Ball. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anthony Mackie, the casting is pretty good. And Miley Cyrus has an incredibly fun cameo. However, the comedy is hard R; full of drug and sexual humor that’s extremely crass. So while there are plenty of laughs to be had in The Night Before, it’s spoiled a bit by the vulgarity.
Good movie, kind of stupid at times but stupid funny. The cast is what makes the movie, Michael Shannon stole the show.
A very underrated comedy with a lot of humor and a good message. You might think this is just another typical stoner comedy and while it has those jokes it also has a strong message about friendship and the loss of family. James Franco and Miley Cyrus' cameos are both fantastic too. This should be a yearly watch for the holidays.
Plenty of good hard belly laughs. You know what your going to get even before you press play so don't expect another (yuuukk) Green Hornet.
Pleasantly surprised, better than I thought it would be...some very good moments and really good laughs..

Just bad, It is shame because I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Mindy Kaling are fantastic actors. My expectations were a lot higher from this cast. The movie was just boring and not funny at all, and I am usually a fan of Seth Rogen's comedy style movies. This just didn't have anything to offer, I would recommend not wasting your time on this one.
