two things make this movie worth it: rebecca hall's performance and ben lovett's score. otherwise it's pretty weak.
the scene after she falls asleep in claire's lap tho. shit took about 10 years off my lifespan i'm still Stressed man i have a heart defect don't do that to me
I love Rebecca Hall to bits and indeed this movie doesn't fly without her.
It's just lazy writing, and an incredibly litteral, in-your-face interpretation than should have been taken much further. Or maybe I missed it. But depression deserves a much better treatment
I saw another comment about House of Leaves. Just because there's a house (and blueprints which by the way are totally mentioned then forgotten) doesn't mean there's a chance that the everest of semiotics will be made into a movie. I for one hope not.
So yeah, hooray for Rebecca, and I'm glad she still works in that mystery/horror vein, but I hope she chooses more interesting projects moving forward.
would probably have rated this an 8 or 9 because I loved the slow build and the tension, but the ending just fell a bit flat to me, still great overall though
also im disappointed that the mirror/alternate house wasnt really… what i thought, I guess? and not sure why its called “the night house” since the night itself or even the house isnt really the heart of the film, should have been called nobody’s home or the house on the lake or something lol
A frustrating movie that never really goes anywhere ,you pretty much can figure out the movie in 15 minutes
For those of you who have not seen this: it is NOT a horror movie. It's more of a psychological thriller. The movie itself can be taken literally (which I didn't enjoy) or as a exploration of grief and depression (which made it slightly better). Ms. Hall carried this movie. If not for her, it would be just another Netflix throwaway.
This movie was great at first, and had so much potential to be a really good film.. It got super cheesy, and far fetched— real fast.
Better than i thought for sure. It's kinda felt liked something very familiar but the way the plot was written it was good and Rebecca Hall gave one of the best perfomances i have ever seen in a horror film. Not something special but still liked it. 7.0/10
Like a good Monday, it started off even more normal than expected but then somehow got better along the way.
In the face of all the neo, A24 horror hitting the screens like weird bugs on a windshield, it's reassuring to see traditional horror movies can still keep my interest and give me a start.
I still don’t understand why there is an upside down house
The creepy and intriguing buildup thankfully makes up for the underwhelming ending.
A gripping watch but forgettable.
Rebecca Hall is great (and so is Sarah Goldberg btw). But she always is. The sound effects are nice too.
But the movie itself? I can't even be bothered to ponder about everything that made no sense.
Scary, for sure. Expect psychological horror and a few jump scares. But overall, the movie tackles a big topic. It also plays a lot with perspectives which is great. I'd say, it deserves a good rating.
Pretty decent, but here’s a little piece of trivia that will ruin a part of the big mystery in this film (and potentially some other films in the future): Apple doesn’t allow for villain characters to own iPhones in movies .
A decent house by the lake horror film with a little bit of The Invisible Man in there. Watch it if you are a fan of Rebecca, she is great in it.
This film builds a good amount of amtosphere but ruins it with lame jump scares and a third act that destroys everything that was built up. Rebecca Hall's acting does stand out given the material she has to work with.
It was pretty creepy and has some nice twists.
The Night House is a solid psychological drama, where the horror is that you don't know your loved one as well as you thought.
Director David Bruckner is one unique director, and Rebecca Hall is one unique performer.
很新颖、很奇特、很好看,你以为迷是女主死去的丈夫,其实迷是女主。, watched at 2021-10-05, imported from douban
The movie started verry good, but the conclusion ad the end is shit, wasted my time by watching it.
They should have focused more on cult things than ghost things. There was potential, but somewhere they lost it.
They should have worked more on the ending.
Overall, it could have been a good movie, but it is now only Rebeca Hall acting.
The Night House" directed by David Bruckner, falls short in delivering a compelling story despite the strong performance of lead actress, Rebecca Hall. The plot is hard to follow and the supporting cast fails to impress. The film can be divided into two halves, where the first half presents a typical haunted house story, and the second half takes a darker, more twisted and psychological turn, but ultimately becomes too unclear and convoluted. While Hall does her best to portray the emotional turmoil of her character, it's not enough to save the film. In the realm of supernatural thrillers, "The Night House" fails to stand out and there are better options available.
An interesting, dark concept of Alice on the other side of the mirror. ;>
Loved this. Brilliant pace, excellent use of visual effects, an awesome score, and a compelling story that keeps you wondering.
An enjoyable ghostly thriller.
sweet sound mix. very nice imagery later on.
I don't understand why some studios classify movies in the horror genre, it must be to boost sales. This movie isn't horror at all.
Rebecca Hall was great as main character, Beth. This wasn't scary but it had some interesting moments but too many stupid jump scares.
Initial half was great. But like all supernatural horror movies, it got too over the top towards the end.
Really very creepy and uncomfortable. This movies is really good. Including the ending.
That was not an ending.
Episode 10x08
David Bruckner as director and Rebecca Hall as the absolute protagonist know how to create an atypical ghost story, with a lot of mystery in a haunted house. He has made my hair stand on end at various times and I have liked it a lot for everything she proposes, I would even have given for a miniseries. One of the best of the year in terms of genre films.
i love movies like this, the jump scares, psychological horror and the house and how simple and beautiful it is and the forest!!!!!!! oh I LOOOOOVE THESE. rebecca for me never failed to deliver, i loved her performance.
The Night House is well written psychological mystery thriller with intricate layers unfolding on a regular basis throughout the runtime. The eerie atmospheric tension and the suspenseful background score enhance the mystery. The movie lacks jump scare as it is more of a psychological supernatural genre. The story needs multiple viewing for a better understanding and is difficult to interpret if you watched it once. Rebecca Hall is outstanding. Her expressions are vivid and she portrays a widow horrified by a presence at her home with utmost perfection. Sarah Goldberg provides decent support as the film progression is rather slow and driven by a sense of mystery of what's happening by the way. When you understand the film, you just appreciate the writers and the director for his vision.

After reading a few positive reviews about this film, my expectations were raised. Sadly, after watching it, I felt a little cheated. It’s not terrible by any means but it’s lacking in both scares and coherency. Disappointing.
This film succeeds due to two key things--Rebecca Hall's tortured performance and the general mood of darkness & isolation. As with most moody horror films, the ending suffices for its purposes but can't live up to everything that built to that point. I did love some of the reveals as you start to understand more about the mystery, and they felt impactful due to how Hall portrayed the reactions to them. Mystery horror fans will love this, much like I did.
I enjoyed this. Rebecca Hall did a good job with the role. Decent atmosphere and scene switches throughout. There is something missing, but for the genre it's above average. 7.3
It started ok and Rebecca Hall is fine but it's possible the most predictable film I've ever seen
Don't waste your time watching this.
JFC... a distrusting, psychotic widow, booze and dreams... It ticks all the tired, harmful cliches.
Hey Hollywood, can you stop glorifying men's suicides as a redemption trope already? It's bad enough that men die from suicide 4 times more often than women.
Really creative way to depict a ghost, I've never seen it done this way before and it gives me hope that an adaptation of 'House of Leaves' is possible. Not very scary but there are some really tense moments with sensible jump-scares. Exceptional camera work, lighting, and sound design. Be warned, it's an extremely slow burn, 'The Night House' would be very boring without Rebecca Hall.
The end of the movie was a good piece of horror. But honestly 70% of the runtime was uninspired filler. Would feel more like a candidate for a 40 minute episode of a horror/thriller tv show.
Never check their mobile phone!
This film has some decent spooks and Rebecca Hall totally carries the entire movie with ease. The trauma metaphor is a little tired these days and I think this movie has some bizarre unintentional implications with it.

This movie stands completely on the performance of the main character. And I think Rebecca Hall was quite convincing. A good horror movie but maybe they could forget about the jump scares next time.
I rewatched the trailer afterward to be sure, and I really found it and the name misleading. The whole house and the mirror house/world concept play's a very little role in the movie, and it left me a bit disappointed. I expected more of this alternative reality stuff.
