The Pianist 2002

First of all, Roman Polanski is a criminal and a coward.

That out of the way, I recently rewatched The Piano for the second time. My first viewing was underwhelming, which may be due to having rewatched Schindler's List not long ago.

Now that nearly 2 decades have passed, I rewatched it with more open mind. By and large, The Pianist isn't trying to make some big statements. I think it is merely interested in retelling Władysław Szpilman's real life tragedies and ordeals (played by Adrien Brody) as earnestly as it can. There are very little embellishments and emotional manipulations.

Every events in the film happened to Szpilman, from his indifferences in the beginning to desperations in the end. Some of the scenes are no doubt a composite of Polanksi's own experience as a Holocaust surviver, who has experienced many of the same events at much younger age. There are moments where some alterations would've resulted in more profound and emotional consequences. But Polanski intentionally avoids them, ultimately just telling the story of a pianist, who didn't want to be a hero. He just wants to survive and play the piano.

Very sad and depressing film based on a true story... and very eye opening also. Story about a Jewish pianist trying to survive during the autrocities during ww2..... great performance by Adrien Brody. Great directing as done by Roman Polanski..... I’m still thinking about this movie a day later.... some scenes were so sad and hurtful that they have remained in my mind. A must watch.

I can’t believe it’s took me this long to watch this knowing about it for awhile because it’s picture is remarkable, deep, beautiful, emotional, eye opening and much more with a strong performance from brody that i’m not much of a fan off but he did a great job in this and he’s definitely made a place in my good books.

The cinematography was scenic and the subject matter was aptly portrayed which ranks Roman Polanski as one of the best in the film-making industry. However, I found the main character of the story weak in such infuriating ways. Adrien Brody is a wonderful actor but his character could have done better given the scope of his network of influence, his skill and expertise as a pianist and as one of the few people fortunate enough to escape the terror of the Nazis. I can't help but wonder what would have transpired had Henryk been the one that got pulled out of that death train by the Jewish Police officer instead. Maybe we'd have gotten a more inspirational story.

In a world rife with wars and battles of heroes with the the sound of swords, knives, and bullets blazing through the heat of battlefield, we're introduced to a man whose fingers work best pressing keynotes of a musical instrument.

Enter our protagonist, a Polish Jew who lived and dredged a life through the hell that was Warsaw that creeked and crumbled during the war that ripped through Europe. His struggles, his battles, and his determination to live through what was inhumane is made to resonate through the works of another Jew, one who could understand this pain as being a victim himself.

And in the end, just as we began to see him play so do we see him at the end playing yet.

This is like the horror movie version of Schindler's List. It's relentless.

The most harrowing film I’ve ever seen. A must-see for anyone, purely for the history.

What a weird choice for a title, the main character being a pianist is not even close to the most interesting thing about the movie. Regardless, this is excellent, there’s so much raw emotion in it. I love how the directing gets grittier and snowier as the film goes along, it creates this sense of increasing dread. No real complaints, I think this is pretty much perfect despite being light on subtext or complex morality. Perfectly acted, well paced, good sound design, interesting characters, it’s all very well done. I like seeing Andrien Brody in a serious, dramatic role like this, because I’m mostly used to seeing his quirky side in Wes Anderson movies. Overall, I couldn’t help but occasionally compare the film to Schindler’s List in my mind, and I think those comparisons are generally pretty favorable.

9/10

Not the most exciting movie in the world, but a heartbreaking story. Impactful WO II stories (almost) never disappoint. Amazing watch!

Movies about Really Horrible Events like the Holocaust are sometimes overrated, in my opinion, because the seriousness of their subject matter overshadows the actual craft in making the movie. For me, this one is a bit of a mess–overly long, unfocused, poor writing, Adrien Brody, etc.

Probably my third viewing of this film, the first time during the Toronto International Film Festival though amazingly it didn’t win any awards there. This was the first time I saw Adrian Brody in film and was astounded by his acting and have been a huge fan ever since. The movie is so poignant and such a great reminder of what life must have been for those who were trying to survive during the war. A must watch.
