The Poison Rose is a fair film that takes a stab at being a suspenseful thriller. The movie has some twists, however, the actors' performances are better than the underwhelming plot. While the film doesn't break any new ground in terms of the genre, it's a decent watch for fans of the mystery-thriller genre.
I don't know, I rather liked it... Yeah, it had some real potential that wasn't realized but the mood was pretty good.
Couldn't even make it through the whole movie. Cast was such a good lineup so I expected more, was very disappointed.
I quite liked this movie - knew almost nothing about it before watching it.
It's about an L.A. Private Investigator that gets hired to return to his hometown of Galveston, Texas by a mysterious woman (who then is never seen or heard of again for some reason), for a job looking into a crooked retirement home. Returning home, he immediately runs into all types of crimes that were just waiting for him to show up and solve.
Morgan Freeman plays Morgan Freeman with his usual effortless style as a bad guy. What happened to Brandon Fraser - didn't he play Tarzan or something years ago? Now he looks like he eats the whole left side of the menu whenever he stops for lunch!
Anyway, the movie is a good time waster - don't expect a classic and you won't be disappointed, but it does keep you engaged for the entire time. 7.5/10
A mediocre noir crime drama, The Poison Rose is full of mystery and intrigue. Based on a novel, the story follows an LA PI who returns to his hometown of Galveston, Texas, for a job looking into a crooked retirement home, but he soon runs into an ex-girlfriend who hires him to clear her daughter of murdering her husband. Starring John Travolta, Morgan Freeman, Brendan Fraser, and Famke Janssen, the film has an impressive cast; though they give rather middling performances. And the low-budget shows in some of the sets and directing choices. Still, there are some interesting plot-twists and suspenseful moments as the investigation unfolds. Yet while it’s entertaining, The Poison Rose is a fairly rote thriller.
I was going to give this movie a chance and watch it. But, about 57 minutes in, Travolta gets into a gunfight and he has a small revolver and bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang he shoots EIGHT rounds from a small revolver. What an easy detail to have right and they blew it. SMH
With a terrible script, poor production values, and a cast that can't be bothered to put in good performances, this is an absolute misfire. The fact that it alludes to The Maltese Falcon at the beginning just seems to make the whole film seem worse - dear director, don't reference a classic when your film is absolute garbage.
A surprisingly good movie. So campy and bad that it was actually good. A couple of plot twists that I probably should have seen coming but didn't.

Is it just me or is John Travolta looking more plastic? It's fantastic, I guess?
The word fantastic, on the other hand, isn't something I would describe when it comes to this movie.
