Is this movie cheesy, dumb and just a bit too much at times? Yes.
Is this movie also colorful and sweet and just plain fun to watch? YES.
It honestly has everything: a cute lesbian love story, Meryl Streep living her absolute best life in an utterly unhinged role that feels like Miranda Priestley on crack (ready to throw hands with a 17 year-old, exuding pure MILF energy and ending up with Keegan Michael Key who is no less than 22 years younger than her (legends only), serving looks left and right - GIVE HER OSCAR NO. 4 RIGHT NOW), Nicole Kidman going All That Jazz on my unsuspecting gay ass (ma'am, this is the McDonald's Drive Thru), a banging soundtrack, homophobia being defeated with the power of a musical number, glitter and sequins galore, and finally, a hopeful message of kindness, acceptance and love that made me cry like a baby.
10/10 would recommend.
I've never been a fan of musicals but after this... yeah, no, I still hate them! Still a fun watch, anything with Meryl and Nicole on it are worth watching!
This was not a good movie at all.
I wanted to turn it off after only 5 minutes into it.
And all because of James Cordon!
There is about 2 minutes of good film... And that involves none of the main cast.
Choreography is good - but the songs and storyline are really weak.
Maybe with a different lead cast it would have worked better... I am assuming Patti LuPone and Nathan Lane were not available!
But overall, just BAD!
So, so disappointing!
So, so miscast!
It's so boring even Meryl couldn't save it(
This is how should make a musical!
When I first started watching this I was disappointed it was a total musical, (I usually don't watch musicals). However, with the actors in it, I wanted to forgo the music and see what it was like. This movie is incredible. What a wonderful way to bring forth understanding, tolerance, equality, even the songs tell a story. This is a must see for everyone. I cried, laughed & felt so much pride that this was put together
2h12 is a disgrace. Paper thin plot, hammy acting, tedious and numerous musical numbers... Longest 2h12 of my life.
3/10
It really looks all very expensive. Overacting is probably in it's place because of it's genre. But the lovebirds... No sparkle of love or anything between them. A missed chance. For me this movie really failed.
an enjoyable musical: good story and message along with catchy tunes.
This movie has an amazing message, and that’s what people most overlook when watching it.
Some of the songs are boring but majority of them are so catchy. Love thy neighbour is hilarious! If you want a lighthearted comedy musical with lots of ZAZZ this is the movie for you
Can not wait for this! just what 2020 needs!
Didn't like the musicals but it was a nice watch once you skip through the musicals the point of the movie is actually okay
Fun watch with catchy music and some great dancing in particular. Story is a bit of a paper tiger political crapfest (let's beat up on the Midwest, those old rednecks!) but the musical aspects are solid and characters are generally fun.
Just like the Broadway show of the main cast, a story about inclusion, a famous cast, amazing musics and coreos and strong visuals is not enough to save a movie. You need to be yourself and not an Oscar stunt.
This is like 16 hours long
Fast forward through the songs and it will be over in 10 minutes. It wasn't bad but not worth missing your prom for.
Overdone. Oversimplified. Tries to send a good and necessary message, but life is not that simple. A movie to watch in a Sunday movie night.
[Netflix] Another optimistic and inclusive film from Ryan Murphy, but again, like tv show "Hollywood", more superficial than really deep. A not very funny script and bland and repetitive songs, closer to "High School Musical" than "Hairspray" (Marc Shaiman would have done a good job here) complete the disaster of a musical that is as narcissistic as the protagonists.
I really wanted to love this but it was very disappointing and boring sadly. The songs are bad, actors are over-acting (okay maybe expected from a musical but still felt too much). I watched it in 5 parts because I was very bored with the story and unnecessarily prolonged scenes.
When The Prom is full of energy (dance numbers and humour) it is an absolute winner. If they could have kept the energy at 11 the whole way through it would be one of my favourite films of the year. However, none of the slow emotional beats worked. None of it felt earned. I find Ryan Murphy to be a master of tone normally. He can add sad moments that hit where others cannot. It did not work this time though.
I think I expected more from this but overall it’s a cute fun movie.

Extremely cheesy and dumb storyline. The music and the singing is okay but honestly I only kept watching because of Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.
