Movie is entertaining and definitely worth the watch.
The fight/sex scene between Michael Keaton and Maggie Q was awkward and cringy AF. It felt like walking in on your parents mid coitus.
Can’t believe Samuel L. Jackson is 72!
The movie is ok, a guess. A lot of good action scenes, capitalizing the fact tha Maggie Q use to be Nikita in another life.
I get that Michael Keaton is a household name and all of that... but that was a little bit cringy for me. I'm all about diferent type of couples, and i don't wanna sound prudish or anything but he's too old for Maggie Q to make any sense. I din't like that paring at all, and it took me away from the movie big time. Maybe with an actor not 28 years older than the female lead it would have made more sense to me. Or maybe I don't find Michael Keaton with that kind of appeal ...
Run of the mill victim turned into an assassin who only kills bad guys. The 90's were full of movies like this, except now the lead character is played by the lovely Maggie Q and the show is stolen by a somewhat atypical villain's henchmen Rembrandt played by Michael Keaton.
That's the only saving grace of the movie, Michael Keaton. He works for the bad guy Anna is trying to kill, essentially playing the opposite to Anna. Equally smart, lethal but far more charming and realized a character who doesn't handle things in the usual villain's henchman kind of way. He's the finesse, or as the character puts it, after the facts kind of guy who cleans up the mess left by the blunt instruments that come before him. Repartee between Anna and Rembrandt is the only thing that's "interesting", that is if you remove the poorly stolen Mr and Mrs Smith fight then fuck scene, the rest you've seen before.
Maggie Q holds her own against Keaton, despite not being given a lot to work with. It has plot holes, it has perplexing character decisions, but it entertains well enough for what it is.
And he got hot, imagine, they killed his mentor and I enjoyed his revenge. Good couple Michael Keaton and Maggie Q
Some good action scenes aside, this is a surprisingly mundane thriller from a usually reliable director.
Better than expected and certainly packs a punch. No nonsense revenge violence with some clever directing. Hats off to Maggie Q for faultless acting but Michael Keaton steals the show... I honestly did not expect that from him! Cracking stuff 7.5/10
I don't want to be that guy who says "I knew", but I knew.
Some good action scenes which had a little more to them than just the action itself. Great central female character let down by some very unthreatening baddies and under written make parts. Enjoyable and keen to see her character again… forgettable but worth a watch.
Don't get put off by some of the negative reviews. Solid 7/10. Decent action and plot twists.
The plot is as solid as a damp saltine and as bland as the watery soup it sits in.
Maggie Q kicks ass! I’d give this a solid “good”. Action was great, story was typical, but I thought Keaton and Q were great together. It was sorta like True Lies meets Bourne with a ton of Marvel-style quips.
Regular action movie. Worth to see MaggieQ back in fighting mode and with great chemistry with Michael Keaton. The rest is very standard.
The movie is good but not great. It‘s definitely awesome to see Maggie Q in this kind of role again. She delivers a captivating performances and also the locations of the film were awesome. But the ending felt a bit rushed imo.
So Maggie Q dreamt of fucking Michael Keaton when she was a teenager & now she gets to as an adult? That’s the only reason for the sex scene.
Strange experience.
On the plus side - we have some excellent action, three engaging main actors, an actual plot (even if derivative and unsupported by a decent script), established director with very good form.
On the downside - the aforementioned weak script, cheap locations devoid of any character, an overwhelming stench of Video-on-Demand...
I've been a fan of Maggie Q for a very long time. This pays homage to her excellent work in Nikita more than any of her other roles. And she still has the goods.
Michael Keston is a pleasure to see but the action isn't sold, which leads to stunt doubles, and in the days of high-def filming, that is unsurvivable. It is clear and apparent even with extremely choppy editing trying to obscure it.
The major pitfall is the cheapness of the locations. The direction is still that of a very accomplished filmmaker. But 60fps and Eastern Europe doubling as London or Vietnam or wherever just reeks of low budget filmmaking.
It was however nice to just have the skeleton of an oldfashioned action film, despite it being let down by modern digital visuals.
I enjoyed the action. I didn't regret watching it. I was left underwhelmed by the script and final act.
6.5/10
ANY movie with Samuel Jackson is fantastic, and this one does not disappoint! Top marks!
For me, the main attraction was seeing Keaton in an action role again.
This is basically just another "hitman" movie as there have been a couple of handfulls released in the past few years. It follows the same formula. In other words, nothing new or exciting here. But it certainly is watchable and entertaining.
If you're looking for a decent action movie then this will certainly do. If you're looking for something new, different and exciting, you will most likely be disappointed.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
It was a good action film! The trio did great (as expected) and it held my attention from start to finish. Is it John Wick? Of course not, but it’s damn good.
Rating: 2.5/5 - 70% - Worth Watching
5.5/10 - It had potential but felt way too unrealistic/stupid and failed to get me invested into the story/characters.
I watched this because of Samuel Jackson but then he got killed at the beginning :( At least he made it back :) Only to get killed again at the end though :o (Or did he? :D But it doesn't really matter as he doesn't seem to have long anyway due to his illness.)
That "relationship" thing between Anna and Michael was super weird...
Some funny/entertaining lines/scenes though and some good action scenes so it wasn't quite a waste of time :)
PS: RIP Benny. His demise really didn't seem pleasant at all! :o
Very simple action movie. Good entertainment where you can turn off your brain or even walk away for a minute to pee. Great cast with Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and [strike]T-1000[/strike] Robert Patrick (yes I know he was great in many other series and movies, he was good in X-Files as well).
Maggie Q was enjoyable to watch. She managed to keep being the lead character even while surrounded by such an established cast.
So bottom line: good entertainment, but nothing special you have not seen many times before and no plot twists you have not seen coming.
The story and the relationship between people was such a mess.
Really enjoyed Maggie Q, Michael Keaton and Samuel L Jackson. What I didn’t like was some of the unnecessary gruesomeness and violence.
I was totally blindsided by this one. I expected another cheap DTV action flick, sold by a couple familiar faces, but this turned out to be a solid little action thriller. A little predictable at times, but I expect that with this genre. It's brutal, got some kick ass action, and good performances. I had fun, but I guess I shouldn't have really been surprised with Martin Campbell being at the helm.
The Protégé is a 2021 American action thriller film that follows a young orphan (played by Maggie Q) who ends up being raised by skilled assassin Moody (Samuel L. Jackson), and her quest for vengeance after he is brutally murdered.
The plot of the film was okay: not terrible, not great. We’ve seen this type of “vow of vengeance” film time and time again, but I will say that it was executed well by the Director, who is interestingly also the Director of the cult-favorite John Wick franchise. There are definitely similarities in the choreography between the two, but there’s less of the sheer ferocity in The Protégé. Other than that, pacing was also good.
The plot started to become a bit convoluted towards the end of the film. Some things that played out didn’t make any sense to me, nor did it make the plot more dynamic.
For a movie that is supposedly about Anna, the titular character, I feel like I didn’t really get to know her at all. There’s was so much room for the exploration of Anna’s history and mental health; the film could’ve dove deep in the psychological repercussions in the flashbacks to her childhood, but the viewers… don’t really get anything substantial. Clearly, when Anna returns to Vietnam, she seems stricken to be back in her home country, but we don’t get to see her come to terms with her feelings.
While the purpose of the film was for Anna to avenge Moody, it ultimately felt like she was only a pawn for Moody in the end.
(Also, imagine my pain as I watch Jackson speak in poor Vietnamese instead of Q, who is actually of Vietnamese descent. In addition to that, the 30-year age gap between Michael Keaton and Q was a lil weird, in regards to their attraction to each other throughout the film.)
Set designs and music were standard, although my heart sang at how beautiful Anna’s little rare book shop was. Nothing much to add there.
Overall, The Protégé is an average action flick, despite its star power with Jackson and Keaton. Would only rewatch for the scenes of Anna’s romantic life in London.
The Protégé is a fairly standard, by-the-numbers revenge thriller. The story follows a contract killer named Anna whose partner and mentor is killed, leading her to track down those responsible. Starring Maggie Q, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robert Patrick, the film has a strong cast that gives solid performances; Q in particular is especially good. And the fight choreography is quite impressive and exciting. However, the plot is pretty formulaic and has all the usual tropes and clichés. Yet while it lacks for originality, The Protégé is entertaining and delivers some thrills.
It's better than I expected. Figured a fun little actioner, and got a pretty damn good b movie actioner w heart and humour. 7.4. Some moments are cringy, but that's okay. Maggie Q was stellar, Keaton and Sammy play their roles well also. Worth your time and then some.
Good enough for an entertaining action movie if that's what you're in the mood for. Nothing spectacular. Very little S. L. Jackson screen time, so manage your expectations.
I enjoyed this movie. Nothing extremely fantastic, but it was entertaining.
Went in expecting a kinda mediocre action movie and ended up really liking it. :)
No time wasted in this entertainment packed film. If you're into action films, this one won't disappoint.
Not bad, Keaton did a good job seeing he's 70.
I liked the movie. But, Who puts his guitar on a table? No one
Why was this movie made? What was the point? Actually how did the creators scam producers to invest money into this movie project?
Recently watched this. Just a helpful hint for anyone hoping to get a lot of Samuel Jackson screentime: this probably isn't the movie for you. He's definitely an integral part of the movie, but the main character is Maggie Q. She does a good job portraying a killer with a daunting past. Add in some Keaton, good suits, random love scene a la Mr. & Mrs. Smith and you have yourself a decent movie to stream with a friend.
Not bad not great. Didn't like the ending. Jackson was as good as usual.
Maggie Q is not a good actress. What, I’m supposed to be impressed by her because she’s slender and has good bone structure, um no. I’d rather watch Fran Drescher for 2 hours. No clue why she keeps getting casted. I’m still pissed about the last movie I watched of hers where I felt like 2 hours of my life were stolen. This isn’t any better.
Samuel L Jackson was good in the 90s, negotiator, 187, long kiss goodnight, etc. Anything after 2000 is cliche’ af. In other words, he hasn’t been good since the 90s and should only be in B/C movies like Nicolas cage. He is no longer an A list actor. If I never saw another Samuel l Jackson movie, I’d feel nothing about it.
How many times is Hollywood gonna make the same damn movie while changing like 5 plot points. Dumb af. John wick, nobody, this crap, etc… get some new fucking ideas already or stop making the same dam movie over and over Hollywood! Movies 2020+ suck ass so far.
If you found this movie entertaining you must be a simpleton
I cannot watch this movie on my computer . Even if I use my VPN
I came for Mr Jackson only to be bummed by his assassination!
Yet another hit man movie and guess what... It's the same as all the others! Do these writers and directors have to go to an exclusive Hit Man school where they all must follow the same formula in movie making?
Here's how it works...
1) Tragic circumstances bring two people together
2) Fast forward to when the older one is getting old and sick
3) One last score
4) Younger one comes out on their own with phenomenal skills of beating people up and killing them in "unique" ways
5) Oh oh, one baddie too many and they get caught
6) Phhh.. they escape easily
7) Big explosion
8) Finale with happy and also a bittersweet ending
Hang on, I should open my own school and teach this stuff... not give it away for free!!!!
Great job by my fellow Hawaii native!
This was a surprisingly good action flick. Not a huge fan of Magggie Q, but she was great in this movie.

It is a fine entertaining movie. Nice to see old guns Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Robert Patrick.
