The Queen 2006

The Queen was wonderful. Who would have thought a movie about the Royal Family could be so interesting? Helen Mirren's understated portrayal of the Queen managed to humanise her and paint her as a sympathetic figure, while Michael Sheen is likewise portrayed in a very flattering light. Tony Blair's wife and staff on the other hand, particularly the Director of Communications, definitely weren't, though in the former's case, that was apparently historically accurate. Great score by Desplat as always, and the whole movie was a handsomely-constructed delight. Getting rid of tradition and royal protocol for somebody who wasn't even HRH anymore was uncool though, and the press and public should feel bad (for something that happened 17 years ago).

Nothing groundbreaking, then or now. Basically a talkative movie more about Tony than the rest.

DISCLAIMER: I did not see this movie in its original language(English), but in a dubbed version(Italian). I may have missed some nuances.

"The Queen" is the most boring movie I've seen in a long time. It's not bad, just boring for my tastes.

The cast was well chosen. Sheen's portrayal of Tony Blair looked believable to me (admittedly, I am not a brit) and Helen Mirren's Queen Elizabeth was superb, really exploring the many facets of a monarch(but, the Oscar that year should have gone to Meryl Streep, IMO). The rest of the actors were good but they didn't shine.

The cinematography felt well done to me. It delivered nice shots adequate to the situation.

The plot might have been interesting but the pacing was off, at least for me. Plus, the scene with the stag was just contrived and forced.

In the end, I can't really recommend "The Queen", unless you are a big fan of Helen Mirren's work or are particularly interested in the affair (though it didn't add anything I didn't already knew for me).

The other major British royalty movie on this list gets bonus points from me for illuminating an historical event I had no idea happened. Diana, sure, but the insider politics behind her death was news to me. But that aside, you really can’t go wrong with Helen Mirren as Queen of anything.
