The Shop Around the Corner 1940

Honestly, is anyone more charming than Jimmy Stewart? I hadn't seen this movie before but was intrigued when I saw it on a Favourite Christmas Movie list. Fortunately, it was playing on Turner Classic Movie channel, so I settled down after my family's Christmas celebration and just enjoyed! Movies from this era of film are more akin to stage plays than the movies now and I so enjoy the craft of well spoken dialogue. The plot is simple and transparent (it's premise was the inspiration for YOU'VE GOT MAIL). The supporting cast is eclectic and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I give this film a 7.9 (enjoyable) out of 10. [Christmas Romantic Drama/Comedy]

The Shop Around the Corner is a classic holiday romance starring Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. Based on an acclaimed play, the story follows two lonely souls who fall in love through a mail correspondence, unaware that they are actually rival co-workers at a gift shop. Sullavan and Steward are pretty good together; though Stewart is clearly giving the stronger performance. And while the romance plot works, there are some confusing subplots that clutter up the film and hurt the storytelling. Yet despite its problems, The Shop Around the Corner is a charming film with Christmas spirit.

the movie on which it is based: You have an e-mail. Ernst Lubitsch + good script + good cast = great movie

This is one of my favorite Jimmy Stewart movies. This was also the movie that inspired the modern movie "you've got mail" starring Tom Hanks. The back and forth between the two main characters is hilarious and the whole movie is just so much fun!
