There are bad movies and then there are movies that just aren´t for you. This belongs in the latter category.
Malick came back after 20 years and a who-is-who of Hollywood lined up to get even the slightest part in the movie, offering to work for free and even paying for it. And I don´t understand why. This is the third movie from Malick I watched. I didn´t made it through the first two (Knight of Cups & The New World) and in a way I didn´t made it through this one, too. After an hour with the prospect of another two ahead it faded into the background and I let play itself out barely taking notice of the plot anymore. Maybe if it would have been an hour shorter I would have stuck with it.
Malicks kind of filmmaking is of the sort that lets movie critics exult in critiques that are as hard to understand as his movies. I´m not bashing this, after all it is production wise a well made movie and the actors are doing their best. A lot of people like it and that is fine with me. But if you have, like me, had difficulties with a Malick movie before you can save the three hours because I am sure you won´t like this.
Seriously, the composite score for this is only 76% what the hell? This is arguably the best war movie ever made.
Private Witt: "Do you ever feel lonely?"
First Sgt. Edward Welsh: "Only around people."
It was poor timing for this to come out the same year as 'Saving Private Ryan', as this would often get overshadowed, which it doesn't deserve to.
'The Thin Red Line' is Terrence Malick at his most poetic. I was honestly surprised by how many celebrates made an appearance, which due to the style of editing out famous people, they appearances turned into cameos. Adrien Brody was the most famous 'film extra' of all time.
Out of all the World War 2 movies, not one of them felt this unique and spiritual, and that hasn't been topped yet.
A masterpiece. Visually stunning, emotionally striking, supported by of the greatest score of all times and an all-star cast it manages to make a philosophical war drama that goes deep in every aspect of the matter. A true classic.
This is a great war movie. The story is amazing, beautifully shot and a incredible cast.
The directing and cinematography are gorgeous. The music is also quite beautiful. Most of the film though is someone screaming about getting shot or nature b-roll with philosophical introspective narration. For 3 hours, it's long winded and doesn't pull me in like other war films. Not for me, but it's clearly cherished by others.
Balancing on the thin red line of masculine pathos and cliché ethno vibes of the nineties. If you ever feel torn between watching a run of the mill heroic war movie or some pseudo philosophical existential introspection, this is it. It's not really bad though, but it is... well, what it is.
one of the best war movies ever in every aspect just amazing true masterpiece
One of my favorite films, and arguably the single greatest war film ever. The acting, writing, photography and score all top notch. Goosebumps with every viewing.
One of the best war movies ever made. Terrence Malick is all we need.

I've never been to any war and I hope I never will be, but if I should imagine what it's like I would think something like that. It doesn't depict war as a series of heroic and great battles, where at he end the triumphant soldiers put their flags on the land of the occupied and the national Anthem intones.
On contrary, it broadcasts a true picture of it. Because it is horryifying, and full of blood, dirt, pang, despair, lost body parts and lost comrades. Where you can easily lose your mind, clear judgement and humanity. If I remember right, Nick Nolte's lieutenant was the only one, who represented the world of a mindless war movie with big explosions. Because he was not in action on the battlefield, just made commands on the background and never was face to face with the terror of war.
My only concern is that I think it was too long, but it's just kinda nitpicking, otherwise excellent movie.
