I read this theory that says that the whole movie takes place in Kate's head, like a re-imagining of something tragic that happened to her. Her tattoo is a snake eating itself, which is a symbolism of Kate's madness.
The article explains that Kate IS Ms Jessel (the former nanny). She worked at Bly Manor and was charged to raise Miles and Flora, but she was afraid of Quint who was a creepy pervert and one night, when she tried to escape, he sexually assaulted her. She fled the manor and abandoned the children, and she went insane because of the trauma and her regret over leaving the children. She was taken to an asylum, and the movie is Kate in her head living out the life that she should have had, the path that she should have taken in which she saved the children and escaped with them from the clutches of Quint.
There are a lot of things that prove that Kate is Ms Jessel. First, Kate always sees Ms Jessel through a reflective surface (window, mirror, etc...). In Kate's fantasy, things are perfect and Quint is dead, BUT, due to her subconscious, Quint keeps creeping in at several points as a ghost and through Miles who is actually a manifestation of Quint. Miles wears the same clothes as Quint and rides a black horse just like him. Besides, the first time Kate sees the ghost of Quint is when he is walking into Miles' bedroom. Miles also almost forces himself on Kate at one point and kisses her, which would be a symbolism of the sexual assault that Quint carried out on Jessel. At one point in the movie, Kate believes she is being attacked by the ghostly hands of Quint, which could be a flashback of her past sexual assault.
At the end of the movie, she returns to reality where she is back at the asylum, and when her mother or rather Kate turns around, she sees her own face, and this is why she screams.
Honestly, the movie was good, until the transition to the ending scene. It made no sense for what was established throughout the movie.
Good actors but again a shitty ghost house movie
I want the last 90 minutes of my life back.
Look. This movie had a lot of potential. I liked the 90s setting. If you want a modern gothic drama or the gothic mood, like I did, you'll like this movie enough. If you're looking to be scared and terrified, look elsewhere. Like some reviews have said elsewhere, I was enjoying it up until the last 15 minutes and then I was confused and all "WTF?!?". I can see how the ending ruined the movie for most. I will say that I had just finished the novella by Henry James, so I was able to watch the movie with more backstory and details that many watching this movie would not have. It touched on a few theories about the novella, but the part with [spoiler] the tutor's mother and the ending was completely out of left field for me (not in the novella at all, not that it matters to me, but that's why it was out of nowhere for me). I would assume the movie was on the side of the tutor actually being crazy, but when you're watching the movie, the ending will be totally confusing because the movie did a terrible job building and leading up to it.
I don't know why I wasted my time with this terrible movie.
Disappointing.
If you read the novel that inspired the film you might find many similarities; but that confusing ending came out of nowhere, despite fitting better with the original plot of the novel. But unfortunately it came after 1h and 25 minutes of boring paranormal horror movie clichès, so it couldn't really do anything to save the film.
Waste of time. I want my 1h 34min back.
This was a waste of time.:wastebasket:
It's a bad-made copy of The Haunting of Bly Manor, 5.5/10
Well without the ending I’d of give it a higher rating because it was actually decent with some good effects and good cast that all played well and definitely underrated.
The plot was all over the place with not enough information but it didn’t effect my enjoyment of the film but the ending was definitely a very poor twist and could of been better so it’s a shame and I’ve read up that it’s more understandable if you read the book that has a different ending thought and seems better but knowing the ending of the film version wasn’t enough because still leaving you how it did in the way it did spoiled it in my opinion and put me off and that can’t change and it made it look like they got lost and didn’t know what they were doing with the ending of this film.
A pretty decent movie actually, despite the bad critical response. Sure, the ending is confusing, tho there have been attempts to explain it, as you can see if you commit to a Google search online. Other than the ambiguity, it is a well made film, and it will be interesting to see how it compares to the television adaptation of the Henry James novel from which this film was based.
what a lot of non-sense!! Does anyone understood the end?? This is a terrible ghost stories with poor acting, bad special effects as they must ran out of money to finish it. Like my girlfriend said: "this is a low budget movie" and she fell asleep after 45 minutes in.
Don't waste your time watching it, unless you want to sleep within the hour.
Didnt understand what the movie was all about
Episode 10x05
Meh! if you want terror, better another one, because here they soon forget that. It is the story of a babysitter a little stupid, it becomes long and heavy. And forgettable. Plus the ending is ... incomprehensible.

At first, I had to rewind back 15 minutes because I thought I missed something. Nope, the ending was that bad. Like someone lost the last few pages of the script.
