It's a nice enough movie with some great performances, but the story feels a bit unpolished. Maybe the sisters side of things needed to be fleshed out more? It feels like her whole characterization is "plays piano" and "has unspecified problems". Especially with twist being what it was, it feels like there was unused potential here.
Really enjoyed this. Sandra Bullock is brilliant as ever and the whole aesthetic of the film is reflective of the weight of the story. I thought it a good story well told
If you liked this, imagine how much better it could have been once all that botox wears out. (And I love Sandra B.)
wow, that made me cry a little. Great movie.
The moment you get to know the truth it's going to hit you hard and every human emotion you possess will erupt ...and that's when you reach out for tissues and release those trapped tears you've been aching to shed for a while.
Sandra Bullock was incredible in this. I thought the story and pacing was very well done. I really got sucked into this, it’s heavy if you have a soul. Unbelievably sad and satisfying at the same time.
No words to say. I almost cried. Such a great story. You must watch this movie.
well acted all around, 100% recommend. pacing made it sluggish in the middle, but i loved it despite that. the third act makes the slow second act worth sitting through, hands down.
Slow and poor movie..But Bullock was great.
Sandra Bullock acting brings all the pain to reality of the character and it gets its highest when she comes face to face with Viola Davis. The deliver an intense and amazing scene. Directing is a perfect fit to the entire mood and drama. The down part is some elements on the script that makes it a less powerful movie. You can tell there is a plot hole when something happen by accident. This is what separates this movie, from a great movie.
I love Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis. The story was interesting since the beginning but the plot twist reminded me of Mearl Of Easttown. And the bunch of dialogues at the end not revealing the truth just pissed me off.
Now that was deep with a simple plot but more to it when you learn more about what happened and hit a few emotions with a good perfromace from Sandra Bullock.
Good story, great acting and well thought out scenery and flashbacks. Definitely recommend.
Great performances and clever storytelling elevate this bleak, thrilling tale way above the swathes of mediocrity from Netflix as of late. Really great stuff. The scene between Bullock and Davis later in the movie is profound; dare I say worth watching the entire movie for. Highly recommended.
A really beautifully moving film. Sandra Bullock was excellent. She walked the line between brooding and damaged and redeemable perfectly.
waow you don't see it coming! Amazing
So sad movie but amazing story and …
Loved how the story unfolded and how it ended. Sandra Bullock did great in this one~
[Netflix] The attempt to encompass different subplots enriches the main character, but leaves out deeper developments of other important characters like Catherine, especially, and the Whelan brothers. Despite the fact that there are interesting questions that are only answered through a predictable resolution of the flashbacks that in a certain way eliminates the ambiguity to draw a line that is too conventional.
An almost great movie with some tense scene, really good storytelling and good perfomances too. 7.4/10
Sandra is doing a really good job in this interesting story.
The movie can be depressing to watch, because the story told is very heavy. Its still worth a watch if you like movies where you can live yourself into the story.
Its interesting to see actors grow up/old because most of them really become very good.
Sandra has never been a great actor, but in this movie... Wow she is good!
This didn't come together for me, despite the wonderful performance from Bullock. The pacing is slow and there is no break in the sombre tone. We never really get to know our main character as much as we'd like either. I enjoyed watching once but I probably wouldn't watch again just because it's so sad.
This is a great movie. Very realistic portrayal, in my opinion, of people coming out of the prison system and what they are up against. Great acting by all. 8/10.
When this film dropped on Netflix, I was puzzled. It sounded so familiar, yet, I was sure I hadn’t seen it. I puzzled over this for a couple of weeks and then began cycling through the reviews I’d posted. Then I saw it, this was originally a three part British television series, THE UNFORGIVEN, which I had given a 9 (superb) out of 10, written by the great Sally Wainwright and starring the brilliant Suranne Jones. Then I hesitated, as a fan of Sandra Bullock (by the way, kudos to her for getting the American rights to this story), I was intrigued, but I knew the ending, was it worthy of this new look? Could it possibly live up to the original? So, with that in mind, I think you might understand my verdict. If you haven’t seen the British original, watch this. It is a fascinating concept and Bullock loaded it with A list actors. Of course, her own talent was in full display, here. If you do know the original, move on, there is nothing to see here that wouldn’t suffer by comparison. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. [Drama]
The wife and I really liked it.
Not perfect but thanks to Bullock’s committed performance, any flaws in the script can be forgiven.
Sandra Bullock is truly a master of her craft and I honestly think this might be her best yet. This film is one that can really tug at your heartstrings and keep you on the edge of your seat, especially with the twist near the end. Was not expecting that. Would definitely recommend!
Get ready for the water works. This was such a good movie
Not a classic, but my girl Sandy B is amazing! Not a bad movie definitely a must watch.
Me and my wife’s tears were about to run down our cheeks until the terrible ending. Wow! What a way to end a movie. I guess we’ll have to use our imagination on what happened next. Rating—5
I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Depressing subject matter, but heard Bullock was very good. She did not disappoint. Nor did most of the characters in it. There were decisions made that I didn't quite understand, as they were very masochistic, but overall this is a well made film. 7.4
good movie check it out
The wife and I loooved it. A poignant story, well crafter, acted and directed, with a lot of taste. A great and satisfying ending. Bullock is great, as expected
It starts horribly slow and confusing, but once you get midway through the movie things start falling into place. Not a bad movie at all, worth the watch.
I think Sandra Bullock is just going to make a Netflix movie every 3 years and that’s going to be her career from now on. No other work needed.
not horrible but I feel like it ended abruptly and some weird character choices. vincent d’onofrio and viola davis’s characters should have been combined with viola playing a single role instead of relegating her to the “wife” and the cheating subplot wasn’t relevant? just felt like a lack of closure in several areas
Great movie. Sandra was PERFECT!
One of the great movie watched in 2021, just the right blend of everything direction, casting acting.
Sandra knocks it out of the park!!!
Wow! This was SOOOO good! Heartbreaking and touching and so conflicting in so many ways. They deserve all the nominations here and Sandra Bullock has proven once and for all, if there had been any doubt that she can absolutely do serious drama.
Sandra is great, but she doesn’t make a convincing 20 year old.
«You think this is gonna make you feel better? But life doesn’t go on. You leave behind everything you love».
A tough film with good actors, especially Sandra Bullock. I really appreciated
Never trust your brother around your wife.
Cried throughout the second half
Great performances all around.
The supporting cast is pitch perfect.
The ending is worth sticking around for.
Great movie!
I wasn't expecting much. After reading the description, I wasn't expecting anything, I wasn't sure I'd even be able to watch all of it. But it was unexpectedly good, borderline great.
Sandra Bullock gives a fantastic performance. The other actors did pretty well but Bullock pretty much carries the movie. I would have liked to see some of the other characters fleshed out a bit more, especially Katie. But, considering it's basically Ruth's story, the characters were fine.
Not much action so if you're looking for action packed, you'll need to go elsewhere. The early flashbacks were a bit confusing but it kind of pulled together as the movie progressed.
One huge plot twist that I should have seen coming but didn't.
Overall, an 9 out of 10. Best movie I've seen in quite a while.
Sandra Bullock does it so good in Dramas !!! Live this one !!
Okay how should I start, first of all I am not a fan of Sandra. But you know sometimes you got to get be it a chance right… don’t expect a fast movie, so if you are in a hyper mode and need a flick to match your levels don’t watch it. I can’t really compare it with any other movie, maybe they have edited a bit too much, because this film could use some extra scenes! Nonetheless I was surprised by the character Sandra is playing and at some point without realising it, you get sucked in! Don’t expect great dialogues because it is not a film for that! For me it was a good movie and I would recommend it!

You can easily guess what's coming next during the whole movie. But it does not keep you off liking the story and the movie. Although I am not a fan of Bullock, I must say that she really performs great. The looks, mimics, etc everything from her side is great. 7/10
