Excellent storytelling. Well done. Bravo!
Not a movie for everyone.
If you want lasers, explosions and monsters in your sci-fi this is not for you.
If you want creepy atmosphere, dialogs and good acting it's a perfect fit.
The movie is not perfect still.
The premise of a local radio getting strange reports from callers around the town is reduced very quickly to only two main calls.
I would have preferred to listen to more callers and have the tension and realization of what was happening building up a little slower than it was.
Also the black and white TV show thing didn't resonate well with me. If they limited that to the introduction it would have been better.
Still a solid 7 for me.
Almost a podcast on film, The Vast of Night is a gripping thriller with some of the most captivating scenes and style this year. Absolutely stellar work from Patterson, along with some awe inspiring long takes from both Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz (the switchboard scene and Mabels interview are some phenomenal cinema). Great work.
It's always refreshing to see a sci-fi movie that isn't afraid to take its time to properly establish characters and the world in which they inhabit. The Vast of Space is an intriguing look at the human side of an alien contact movie.
Absolutely terrible. I get so annoyed when a film is rated highly (in this case 66%) and you figure out later it's just boring or artsy fartsy people rating it because they THINK they saw something artistic. It's not artsy just because someone slapped a retro color filter over it, it's bad. Had the movie actually lead to something I'd of thought it was better, but as it was it was just EXTREMELY long scenes of blah blah blah scenes that rise tension that the film never delivers on. I swear the same people who like this trash are the ones you can throw paint buckets at a canvas and they say "Oh wow you can feel the artist's anger in this piece." Absolute garbage.
Really enjoyed this film. Its certainly different from most films, loved the long dialogue heavy scenes and the slow growing atmosphere.
Cinematography is on par. Quite good and refreshing. But it ends there. This movie should be called: The Vast WASTE of a night.
To better describe this: Its a poor try to copy Orson Welles radio transmission vibe.
I hope some alien race can get me those 91 minutes back at some point.
05/10.
It would be so cool if anything happened in this movie. At all.
A Sci-Fi movie which doesnt emphasize on VFX nor action, but brings you into proper storytelling. Could be slow for some, for me it was a good effort. 7/10
I couldn't understand a word spoken for the first 20 minutes the accents were so strong they might have been speaking Russian. This is one dreary, slow placed movie filmed mostly in the dark with only a few actors.
Special effects are negligible as is the thin story line and the ending a complete letdown ,not sure why it gets good ratings. Really a waste of 90 minutes.
despite most ppl here said it is boring i really liked it. the atmospehre and style was very good and i liked the overall fell to this movie. now i have to say you have to be in the modd for this kind of movie to like it but i dont think this is a bad movie in any capacity
This is a good movie. The actores are excelente. No Need for Money to do a good movie.
This movie looks and feels like an 80's sci-fi B-movie. Its nothing spectacular, but it is good. It draws you in and you slowly uncover a mystery along with the main characters.
Too much talking and quick dialogues. The first 15 minutes of the movie didn't even understand a word so had to turn the subtitles on. But I guess the movie was ok for a low budget movie.
I'm sorry but the is the most boring movie I have seen as of May 30, 2020!!!! Lord Jesus, I was praying for Aliens, a Monster to appear after 10 minutes.....smh. They do soooooo much talking with absolutely nothing happening on screen
There are shades of Close Encounters here, albeit on a microbudget. Its quite stylish in parts, evoking the Twilight Zone with its setup, although the talky nature of the film might be offputting to some.
It's like a radio drama... but you watch it. Let's call it -- cinema!
The film plays out over four key acts and they feature some wonderful one-shots, period piece settings and dialogue. Jake Horowitz and Sierra McCormick are a wonderful pair. This is sci-fi without the pew-pew, but it made the ending all the more delightful when it came.
There was potential here but it just falls flat on its face. This should have been a short film instead. The first 20 minutes is boring dialogue, and let me be clear, dialogue doesn't always have to be relevant to the plot but it does need to be at the very minimum interesting. The first 20 minutes could have been thrown away and nothing of value would have been lost (except the one lady talking about the animals).
Why spend 20 minutes building up the female lead as an aspiring journalist so much, just to have nothing happen with it at all? She does not build as a character, and the whole thing was seemingly just to pad out the time to make this into a feature length film. The same can be said for the radio host, his personality gets established for the first 20 minutes and then the rest plays out as if he is just anybody. His accent and all of the slang that was used in the first 10 minutes gets forgotten very quickly, it's honestly comical.
The story doesn't take you anywhere surprising, exactly what you expect to happen happens.
This was a rather decent film, I feel if you liked Encounter of the Third Kind this will most likely be up your alley.
Lame. 45min story telling, then She runs. But wait, no action, another story telling. Maybe it was a AI script because of the strike, maybe. Worst than Netflix movies.
Intriguing story. Good acting. Too much dialogs. Very slow.
Rated a Connor 10, normal 8.7
This is a movie that isn’t for everyone, but is carried by the weight of the actors and their conversations. A fresh take on a genre that is wasted by generic tropes and spin out movies. It takes a good 15 minutes for the pace to really start moving, but once it gets into the groove it just keeps upping the tension. The whole movie is just conversations leading up to a mystery that you already know the answer too, but still keeps you feel tense and engaged.
The two protagonists barely hold the film. The ending is disappointing and the easy way out. There are little credible scenes that damage the film that barely holds up at times
I expected a run of the mill low budget poor attempt at an action scifi movie, so I was pleasantly surprised about this.
About the low budget and scifi I was correct, for the rest I was not.
The opening feels kinda gimmicky with the whole visual representation and introduction. The parts where this 'theme' of the opening the television screen template is used again, are most likely the poorest part of the film. After this we get dumped immediately into the actual opening. It could use some more easing into, because I felt kind of shocked into it. Mostly because of the instant fast paced talking and heavy dialect. It does effectively sets the tone and expectations for the film immediately, and makes clear that this is a dialogue driven film. More action than some mild running you should not expect!
Dialogue is this films strongest point. Not only the way people talk, but rather what they say are very character-centered. This causes very recognizable identifiers between characters from the second they are introduced, as well as an idea of the time period. Even some of the minor side characters feel like actual characters, opposed to the blank slates we often see in many movies.
Through dialogue and with the benefit of some, surprisingly I might add, good acting the main characters are set up. Nobody will win an Oscar for their performance in this film anytime soon, but the (at least to me) unknown actors held their own very well. Especially considering several slow zoom long shots that were used. Because the film heavily leans on its dialogue, it is commendable that these actors can carry this as well as they do. Many have failed or done (much) worse under similar circumstances (including A-list stars.)
It is a shame though, that this character setup does not really lead anywhere. The 2 protagonists lack some kind of progress or journey or anything at all xD Everything was there, but the characters went nowhere and we were left with just the promise of an arc. Of course stuff happens (especially in the conclusion) and there is story development, but the people we met at the beginning were the exactly the same at the end, and nobody ever had to change or work through any personal obstacle. The story itself is also pretty straightforward. Not worthy of the name mystery, but straightforward enough and with enough substance to not totally crumble. Unfortunately, this leaves with a rather lackluster, maybe even unsatisfying end.
Visually it can be a bit (too) dark, and some shots are a bit awkward or 'too much', but besides the aforementioned opening 'theme' it luckily doesn't fully go off the rails. Of course, again, do note expect any large scale blockbuster CGI or anything even close to that. But it would be silly if you would expect that in a film that costs about the same as just 1 car in the Fast & Furious franchise.
All in all, a decent low budget scifi slow burn that fizzles out in the end. I would only recommend this if you are okay with watching something you won't see from the likes of Michael Bay, Christopher Nolan or Marvel studios.
Just a brilliant bit of original story telling. Totally evokes a time and place and people we thought we had forgotten. Creates a sense of wonder and imagination long missing from American film. Best film of 2020 by far. Stunning.
It was okay but I kind of wanted more , it was a bit of a let down.
After half an hour into the movie, it's a little upsetting how slowly it builds - despite how interesting the story turns out to be.
Or this is a failed pastiche of b movies from the 50, or I did not get it.
Or it's just plain bad...
The Vast of Night isn't a bad movie, it's just not a very compelling one.
Would have suited better as a 40 min episode. Could have used some spunk, some mystery and some investment.
No matter what virtues one might be able to identify in its individual parts, The Vast of Night is a poor film.
Abominably acted and bizarrely scripted, a visual medium is a strange choice for a film that is 80% dialogue among seated characters. The Twilight Zone framing is laughable and there are no thrills to be found in this supposed ‘thriller.’
Steer clear.
I heard scifi fans praise this movie but it honestly didn't live up.
That doesn't mean it's a bad movie, I'm glad I watched it. But story wise I expected something more interesting to happen.
I feel bad for the old lady btw.
This would be a solid hour-long radio drama. Too bad someone decided to make it a 90 minute movie.
If and Only if the ending was more satisfactory...Otherwise a good suspense and thriller syfy movie which keeps you entertained all the way
in a small town in the united states in the 1950s a radio transmitter captures signals from aliens, creating a counterpoint to the veracities of these programs

Artsy? Maybe. Boring? Most definitely.
