The Virgin Suicides 1999

As soon as we see the title it suggests that you are going into a depressing film and this certainly is one. With a mysterious, melancholic and sometimes haunting atmosphere Sofia Coppola was able to do a solid debut with her The Virgin Suicides.

This tells the story of five beautiful girls, full of life are forbidden to live their adolescence in a normal way by the restricted orders of their religious parents.

Is difficult to talk about this film without spoiling much and I don't wanna do it for the ones who haven't seen it yet. I will just say that freedom is one of the best things we can have in life. Living in cloistered is not easy or good for our mental health.

The performances are solid from all of the actors, it's visually beautiful and has a great the soundtrack.

Masterpiece, I love the atmosphere and the music by Air is stellar. Has a vibe similar to “Drive (2011)” IMHO

From writer/director Sofia Coppola comes the period drama The Virgin Suicides. Based on an acclaimed novel, the story follows four sisters who, in the wake of their young sister’s suicide, struggle to deal with their oppressive parents who attempt to shut them off from the outside world. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, and Kathleen Turner, the cast is quite impressive. The soundtrack is also pretty good, and the film does an excellent job creating the look and feel of the ‘70s. However, the storytelling’s a bit weak and doesn’t have a clear focus. The Virgin Suicides is an interesting film, but it tries to do too much.

You either get it or you don't.

I think I liked it. It's slow but that's what it's trying to do. I loved the music choices. Kirsten Dunst is good.

I always kind of cringe at people saying 'the book was better' but honestly... the book was better. Way better.
The movie has a stellar cast. The girls really look as I pictured them but the way the story is told in the movie skips over a lot of crucial moments. The best example is Mary surviving her attempt (just like Cecilia) only to die later like her sisters.
What the movie does capture very well is the vibe of the book. The way its shot, the music, it's a visually beautiful movie.

I couldn't finish the book, and I barely managed to finish the movie. Very mediocre.
