There are a few genuinely funny bits. The plot is quite charming. It doesn't take itself too seriously.
The numerous big name costars are fine but aren't given a whole lot to do.
6.5/10
This movie would have been a horrible watch if I hadn't seen it with my kids. But I did watch it with them, and we all enjoyed it. My 7-year old twins thought it was absolutely hilarious and even as a grown up I thought there were some clever sight gags & silly situations that nonetheless made me chuckle. I personally appreciated that the content was fairly innocent and it wasn't a whole movie with nothing but bodily function jokes.
The plot is so tired and overused, nothing about this film was original at all. There is a problem between two people, then they do bad stuff to each other and at the end they feel sorry for it.
Not just the writing but also the characters were cliche. Such a stereotypical family - teenage ('ugh, I hate my parents') girl, hiding a relationship with a boy, middle school boy loves video games, and youngest sibling (most of the time a girl) who is always so innocent.
I don't care if it's a kids movie, that doesn't excuse it for being lazy and formulaic.
What a waste of a talented cast! This is a mostly unfunny and predictable movie, and one that I will never be at peace with.
In a way I almost want to up the score by a point or two just for being exactly as bad as I imagined.
There are honestly aspects of this movie that I like. De Niro's Ed doesn't want to be there. and the kid Peter hates losing his room. This is a childish thing for him to hate but he at least is a child. The real curiosity is why he has a giant room to himself while his sisters one in elementary school, and one in high school are sharing a room. It's a ridiculous arrangement. But Peter with zero tact or shame openly hates on his grandfather for "stealing his room". This shows how poorly he's being raised that he never talks about why his grandpa is moving in and no one talks about why grandpa is moving in to him. The kid just takes it personal and is constantly very publicly announcing his displeasure. It's weird. But the first thing I like about this movie is that Grandpa Ed doesn't take it seriously. It's a child acting childish why would you take that seriously. It's one of the most realistic aspects of the movie. He just ignores him. Beautifully.
But eventually the movie has to happen and Peter is too childish to not just straight up assault his own grandfather so Ed devises rules of war that they have to follow. All reasonable measures about keeping it one on one. The "pranks" or "attacks" in this movie aren't worth speaking about for the most part. There's the one where Ed retypes Peter's "What I did for summer" homework and the kid has to read out loud embarrassing sentences in front of his class because his teacher insists that he keep going and Peter is too much of an idiot to lie and make up what he did over the summer. Seriously it would have made much more sense if someone else had read the paper to the class. The rest of the pranks are literally 1 step up from that. They're boring. They're uninteresting and Grandpa as the adult has the better pranks. It all culminates in a final competition of Peter's choice. He chooses the sponsored sport of trampoline dodge ball brought to you by whatever that place is called.
It's at this point that I dismayed that we were only 50% of the way through the movie. What more could possible the movie have to say? Turns out... nothing.
This was surprisingly fun and funny. I wasn't expecting much however I think the kid, Oakes Fegley was a good match for De Niro.
How I rate:

It's a cheap comedy but man I love this. The dodgeball scene was the best part of the whole movie, especially when Cheech Marin teeth fell out. I laugh every time at that scene.
It isn´t original and sometimes u know what will happen in the movie but come on, just turn off your mind, relax and laugh with your family. The job with Robert de Niro is incredible !!!!
Rubbish.
Everything about 'The War with Grandpa' just feels off, nothing feels right to me. What doesn't help is that the first 25-30 minutes are extremely dull, like utterly and truly boring. Once the premise gets underway it slightly improves, yet still produces nothing to remember. Even the 'war moves' that feature fairly cool scenarios just come across as very underwhelming.
The acting across the board is subpar, at best. That's a major disappointment, given Robert De Niro (Ed), Uma Thurman (Sally) and Christopher Walken (Jerry) are involved. I don't necessarily feel like they weren't trying or anything, but I just didn't sense any spark from them. The kid actors, meanwhile, are average.
Despite a relatively short run time of 94 minutes, I was gagging for the end credits for a rather long while. With that said, knowing me I'll still probably check out the apparently upcoming 'The World War with Grandpa' sequel in a few years...
My almost 12 year old son loved it, laughed a lot, but me a bit less.
So glad I waited for this to be on Demand. Enjoyed it much more in my own home.
Not bad to spend an evening. Robert De Niro is the best. The other ones....just ok.
One of the "old folks" movies they are coming out with these days. That side of the equation worked. The kid, however, was a mess and so were his friends. I gave this a 6 instead of 5 because I feel like the codgers got 60% of the time, so that's math.
Not to bad for a family movie some good pranks :D
Family fun, with a simple story and a epic cast. Good for some laughs but that’s it.
Happy to see Walken again :)
Really enjoyed this film .Brilliant lol
Had a few funny parts in an otherwise boring movie. I did appreciate the few scenes showing the family love and affection between the grandpa and grandson. I think that was the one highlight here.
Robert was in it for the De Niro, Jane needed to Seymour and Christopher should've kept on Walken.
This isn't a cliché waste of comedy, it's a mystery: why did the A-list cast sign up for this steaming pile of Neighbors meets War Games?
Not a great movie but it does have some funny moments. The combination of Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken is fabulous as they mesh well with each other. I just found the movie a bit too juvenile and predictable.
Joker to The Irishman to this, does any actor have the range of movies that De Niro has?

I couldn't wait to see this after watching the previews. It was terrible. Not funny and DiNiro doing his usual schtick just like his picture on the poster. Completely uninteresting, bad writing and mediocre acting. Cringeworthy would probably be one word to encapsulate this piece of garbage. 0/10
