As with other recent lesbian period pieces (Ammonite comes to mind) this movie has been unfairly compared with Portrait of a Lady on Fire. As with Ammonite this movie is extremely understated and the point of the movie isn't so much about a potential relationship as it is about how few options women had in the not-too-distant past. I thought that movie smartly knew how to begin and end the story and it didn't overstay its welcome. The two leads are fantastic and Affleck also shines in an understated supporting role.

Slow, stilted drama that doesn't always succeed but the period atmosphere gives it gravitas.
This is a most melancholy film that skirts tragedy at every turn. Beautiful performances by both Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby. (Honestly, Vanessa Kirby is radiant! Even though she is not, she always give off such a strong Redgrave vibe). Casey Affleck evokes great affinity in his supporting role. Very unique in our cinematic culture and definitely not for every palette. I’m not sure how I feel about it beyond what I’ve said. I give this film a 6 (moody) out of 10. [Tragedy]
It is a heaviness, besides being quite slow for my taste, and not slow for having a good style if not how lazy it is.
These lesbian-type movies are a real drama, and although they try to be inclusive, the subject of the dead lesbian is a fucking topic that could almost be considered homophobic, which they don't want to show.
Besides being more of the same, a tearful period movie, super slow and with a bad ending.
A languid representation of desire that is as icy as a snowstorm. It is more concerned with showing the depressing existence of the two protagonists anchored to their mediocre husbands, that the brief moment of passionate hope conveys nothing. Although there is an introspective intentionality in the voice-over, the director adopts a certain pretentiousness in the staging that blocks the emotions.

The World to Come is an excruciatingly boring and monotonous period drama. The story follows two women in the 1850s who form an intimate friendship and deal with the harsh conditions of frontier life. Starring Katherine Waterston, Vanessa Kirby, and Casey Affleck, the cast isn’t too bad. The script however, is really poor; relying on seemingly endless monologues that drone on and on. And there’s really not much of a plot, as random things kind of just happen. Still, the sets and costumes are especially well-done and feel remarkably authentic, and the scenic landscapes are beautifully shot. Yet despite its impressive craftsmanship, The World to Come is a dull and lifeless film.
This is a slow moving, bleak, and ultimately devastating film, so set your expectations heading in. I mean, this is a story of a lesbian relationship attempting to exist in the mid-1800s, so it's not going to be easy going. The small, brief moments of happiness that are allowed to exist are so rare and there are long stretches of cold, lonely aching between them, which the pace of the film bears out. You feel the neverending stretches of time between rendezvouses as you watch the minutia of frontier life play out. I love what this film was trying to portray, but it was a labor to get through with the absolutely laborious pace used.
I know it’s passé to be into tragic lesbian period dramas and I’m supposed to want more from my content but I would like to argue why can’t I want a variety of things that includes this without making it less valuable than stories of queer people doing the boring shit hetero people do like live to a ripe old age—yearning is a powerful drug and I refuse to quit her

I watched this movie against my better judgement, with a rice grain of hope, and in a state of suspicious dread considering the norm for mainstream made queer films. I regret the near two hours of anxiety, ambivalence and anguish. In plainspeak - Fuck this heartbreaking shit.
Now I'm going to watch some mindless series and try to purge away the well of sorrow that burrowed itself into me.
