I wish more movies were as simple as this. Bad, world-ending thing happens, guy tries to make the most of the last hours. No worries.
Obviously being straight-forward and to-the-point won't win any accolades but it's refreshing after all the heavy films in my recent rotation (Stalker, Oppenheimer, Snowtown). And although it's simple, the execution is on point.
What These Final Hours (2013) also has going for it is that it's shot in my hometown, Perth WA. Rare I see anything of this sort of quality in this setting, to be sure. Seeing skylines that I grew up with contrasted with the oncoming apocalypse and its sociological consequences, very fun.
However, this film is separated from other doomsday 8's and above because it lacks action (it's in need of a set piece maybe) and relies on the interpersonal drama of those trying to survive... which isn't bad per se but you need actors of a higher caliber if you hope to indulge in dramatic scenes. Constraints of a tight budget, methinks.
Definitely a strong 7 though, and a deep pocket pick when someone's already seen the Children of Mens and 28 Dayses etc etc.
P.S. For what it's worth, we do get a Sarah Snook cameo, Australian accent and all. She drugs a literal kid with what I assume is MDMA; absolutely wild.
An interesting character study but ultimately just an average end of the world flick that kind of tries to do too many things at once. Is he the tough guy with a heart or the dick boyfriend who just wants to go to an end of the world party? Whatever. It was fine for 90mins
Surprisingly good. I like movies where the end is... the end of the world!
The plot sounded interesting but I just never reached a point where it peaked. the whole movie just is flat. And althought it might sound a bit zynical - but if it`s the end of the world what does it really matter what you do ?
A rather boring effort into the apocalyptic genre. The mix of dumb and unlikable people partying set to our protagonist learning about himself at the end of times because of a little girl (original^2) doesn't really work. It's just shallow violence and sex to fill up the screentime for a cheesy ending. There is little here to convince you of a realistic impending doom (and the idea of certain countries getting hit that much later is also not well thought out). Color grading the whole movie to brown does not making it more exciting.

I liked it. I liked that I had preconceptions about the main character and then we see, and he finds out, who he really is. I thought the story was original enough for the genre. Judging the movie logically is a little against the idea of the movie as the whole basis is upon a great unknown. I thought it worked at the end and it was an emotional movie at times. The two main performances were very good. I'd recommend it to anyone. On one hand I'd give it 6/10 because it's a simple story and the emotional tricks have alk been used bedore, but I'm going for 7 because for what it is it does it really well.
