I was so incredibly disappointed. It was overall a pretty lame action movie with an excuse of a love story.
Again one of the better superhero movies ever made.
It's just on my watch list, I'm simply passing by to say: "Kenneth Branagh??? Seriously? WTF is this?"
I'm a bit shocked, strange movie for this guys... debut as director?
This movie is extremely underrated because people judge it as a Marvel movie, so they expect a lot of action and they are disappointed when they see that for most of the movie, Thor doesn't even have his powers.
Many people dislike this movie because of the lack of action but it has the best character development out of all the other Marvel movies that focus on a character. No other Marvel character has evolved as a person in one movie as much as Thor has in this movie.
At the beginning of the movie, Thor has a really big ego since he is only interested in action, fame and glory, and he would rather kill people than save people so at this point, he is not really a true superhero, just a warrior who wants to fight.
The reason why Odin takes away Thor's powers is because that is the only way for him to become more humble and to grow into the responsible adult that his father wants him to be.
And of course, many people would say that Thor shouldn't be this way to begin with but they forget that his father was the king of Asgard, so he was raised in similar conditions as the rich kids of our world, and those kids tend to let it go to their head and they start to think like they are better than everyone else. And I am not relying on something that I read, but my own experiences to claim such things because I spent 4 years around rich kids in middle school.
It was only when Thor lost his powers and became as weak as a human that he realized his vulnerabilities and that is when he became more humble and less focused on his ego.
Another thing that I love about that movie is that at the end, you can see that Thor has evolved so much as a person that he can be viewed as a hero when he stops Loki from destroying Jotunheim completely. But the thing is that Loki is doing the exact same thing that the former Thor from the beginning of the movie would have been willing to do. The main difference between Thor and Loki is that Thor is the only one between the two who grows as a character because he is the only one who is punished by Odin.
This movie shows that it is not the costume and the hammer that makes Thor a superhero, but it is what he does with those things. In the beginning, he was a selfish warrior, and in the end, he became a selfless hero who was willing to sacrifice his own life for the safety of other people even though he knew that without his powers, he wouldn't be able to win.
What is interesting when looking at the Disney+ Loki series (which came out 10 years after this movie) is that when Loki is punished by the TVA, he also learns a lesson and grows as a hero just like Thor did in this movie.
I watched this on the 4th of July... technically making this the Thorth of July. I'll head to the door now.
I like the change of place and Hopkins is cast perfectly
@dunpealhunter I know what you mean, but you have to see Thor is quite diffrent in this point. Since almost every marvel hero originated through accidents, scientific experiments or evolution - Thor is what he is because he was born by gods, period. So no struggle, that's simply his story.
I've been rewatching most MCU movies and got to this one - It's weird going back to these movies after so long, and after the characters changed so much (Thor especially) but I'm surprised at how well this one holds up.
Watching Tom Hiddleston's performance is even more fascinating once you know what Loki is up to, you can definitely see him acting out the deceit, and the camera lingers on him a lot too. The humor also seems a bit less heavy handed than on later movies. My only complaint would be that the Warriors Three are completely expendable, but overall great performances and direction, lots of fun, glad I didn't skip it on rewatch :P
"Thor" definitely has its positives. The design of Asgard was beautiful and the technology on display was a wonder. I liked the integration of S.H.E.I.L.D. into the story and their interaction with Thor himself. Chris Hemsworth is almost perfect for the Thor role and brother Loki is a bit wimpy but connivingly convincing. The battles with the Frost Giants were very good as was the tangle with the chromed 'Destroyer'. It's internal inferno weaponry was a great design.
The movie loses its impact when Thor interacts with cutesy Natalie Portman. Nearly all of Thor's time on Earth takes away from the splendor of Asgard. Thankfully, the final battles take place on Asgard and not on Earth. Anything involving Asgardians on Earth during the course of the movie looks silly. As the final battle rages on Asgard, Thor's new squeeze Jane is limited to occasional shots of her glaring up at the sky.
This is a good lead-in for Thor's incorporation into "The Avengers", but it's not a must see comic book movie.
This one wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Felt somewhat forced at times - romance haven't been developed enough, antagonist of the movie is at his worst in the entire MCU (but oh my god will his character evolve to be one of the best MCU characters)
overall solid origin movie for Thor, but he really didn't shine until Ragnarok.
I forgot how much I loved the Third franchise. One of my favourite superheros is Thor and my favourite villain is DEFINITELY loki. I loved watching this movie again, and it reminded about how good these movies were. Finished this one at 8:11PM
I so much hate Natalie Portman as a person! She's a greedy person, one who sells his moral values for money should not have any screen time! This made watching this movie a bit hard for me!
Cheap acting with a terrible plot. Disappointed.
This movie totally blew me away, didnt expect it to be THIS good!
While not as bad as some of the other Marvel movies as Iron Man or The Avengers (personally, I only like their X-Men franchise and Spider-Man 1-3), Thor is no must-see. It is a no-brainer that you can watch once, but that's it IMHO.
Thor as an excellent superhero film that it was, I felt like it could have improved in the story line more. The story line kept me interested throughout the film but wasn't as good as compared to say both Iron Man 1 & 2 and Captain America. Although in my opinion Captain America had a better story in its film, Thor was much more fun and entertaining to watch than Captain America. The cast was prefect, Hemsworth was an excellent choice for Thor, and Hiddleston played Loki so well along with Hopkins who was great as the great Odin; also Portman is great in anything she is in. With SHIELD more involved with this film than any other, it was a solid build up to The Avengers film and overall a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Look into my tubey hole Thor you good lookin muhfucka
I honestly hated Thor's character. Kind of ruined it for me
While it's not as great as Iron Man or Xmen First Class, I think Thor is still a very decent superhero blockbuster. Since I'm not familiar with most superheroes, I like the 'origins' storylines that most superhero movies seem to follow nowadays. Perhaps boring to some, but for newcomers it's great! The acting, visuals and sound are just what you'd expect from a 2011 superhero blockbuster. Great entertainment for an evening!
Most of all, this movie made me want to start reading the comics (which I know I won't do), so it's a good thing a sequel (and the Avengers) is coming to continue the great cinematic superhero revival.
Didn't really enjoy this. Couldn't really get into it but struggled on through anyway.
I think the costumes we're pretty poor and it detracted from the film.
I liked how they incorporated SHIELD and Iron Man though.
not exactly Shakespeare, but better than expected
Film 135 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
I believe I'm in the minority here but I love the original Thor film. Everything here just works for me. Hemsworth more serious performance is so refreshing in comparison to what subsequent films, specifically Thor: Love and Thunder would do to the character. Hiddleston is captivating as Loki, a role that would define him.
The Shakespearian-esque vibe of the Thor film, no doubt due to director Kenneth Brannagh, works well for me. Hopefully Marvel can give Thor 1 more film similar to this before Hemsworth's time is up.
Next in my MCU rewatch, decent action, weird set/location, and a lame and cringy love story thrown in. Nothing special, but not totally awful. One of the weaker MCU films.
Decent movie. Cgi was doing good, dialogue was still abit stiff, acting was phenomenal, action was decent and so all in all the reason my ratings not higher is because its just not my type of yapping.
“How dare you attack the son of Odin!!” -goes crazy in a hospital gown-
A nice, simple coming of age story that's a breath of fresh air compared to the obnoxious overused cringe unfunny quip comedy in future MCU titles.
whoever thought it was a good idea to bleach chris hemsworth’s eyebrows like this, lets talk
I don't get the hate, this is a fair film. It oscillates between a fun fantasy romp and a dark and brooding family drama quite well, despite the drastically differences between the dramas. However, despite the film being enjoyable to watch, there doesn't seem to be anything particularly special about it.
Thor is a spectacular comic book film that delivers one of the most imaginative and unusual superhero tales in the Marvel Universe. Inspired by Norse mythology; Thor, God of Thunder, is cast down to Earth and stripped of his powers, but he must find a way back to Asgard when his brother Loki attempts to seize the throne. The film’s cast is stellar, and includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, and Anthony Hopkins. Additionally, director Kenneth Branagh does a brilliant job at creating a vivid and colorful aesthetic for the film. Full of exciting action and fun humor, Thor is a fantastical adventure.
Hemsworth is so damn hot!! good movie could have improved on the storyline a bit ... not as exciting as first Avenger and Iron man
33 | Thor is reckless and unwise. He is just a boy who pretends as a king. This film tried to show us the transformation of Thor Odinson from a boy to a man. But, unfortunately, it was not land perfectly. His character development seems rushed and contradicted his character.
In only weeks he changed so much without a moment of reflection on his mistakes in the past. Since Thor heard the terrible news from Loki his personality suddenly switch. Because of how sudden it is Thor seems more like an unemotional being. He is just like a robot who could be programmed by a computer with a fast click.
Not only Thor who has a bad development, Loki too. How could he self-proclaimed as a king without a council meeting or at least a discussion from several people who helped Odin run Asgard as a realm? A place as big as the earth should have many people involved to help Odin govern Asgard, but instead, Asgard seems like an empty kingdom.
This film showed us many people on Thor's big day, but then they just vanished and willingly accept Loki as a king. Asgard repeatedly said as a great big realm but we could not feel the nuance of the realm itself. The people of Asgard felt so staged and faked. This film failed to convince us that this realm has life.
Thor felt like an oversimplified film for kids' audiences. It is okay to do that. This film is part of MCU, of course, the executive producers and the investors want to create a large number of audiences. So they make the story easy for anyone to understand.
The hard thing when making a film is to choose to make a high-quality film or high profitable film. The people behind this film have already chosen their decision and we should respect it.

Thor's yellow eyebrows makes baby Jesus cry.
No English voice :( I want watch this movie please
Despite the fascinating Asgardian setting and cool visuals, the first "Thor" movie felt rather bland and slow-paced. This is mostly due to the dated approach in the writing. Despite being a relatively recent movie, it's crammed with all those sappy and naive stereotypes of much older superhero movies. Thor's relationship with Jane and the other human characters is so forced and simplistic, all characters are one-dimensional and add no value to the plot. It does not look like their affection grew through the experiences they shared together; they just spend a night under the stars to realize they are soulmates. I guess the whole thing is supposed to be about Thor's growth as a character, but again, there is no development whatsoever: the arrogant and reckless kid suddenly changes into a big-hearted superhero, just because the story requires him to. Wait, maybe finding true love is what changed him all of a sudden? Please. Him trying to adapt to the human world was kind of fun to watch though.
"Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor!"
It is crazy to see how much Thor has changed since his first movie. Talk about a character arc! From arrogant, bleached eye-browed man to one of the most loveable personalities. I like how this focused mainly on Thor and Loki's relationship, but also feels a little corny when he is on earth.
Was a nice change of pace with the addition of space .... for the MCU
Kinda similar to how I feel about the two films that precede this in the MCU. 'Thor' is a good, solid watch.
It fails to set the world alight, so to speak, but there's entertainment there. It's my personal standout of the three films since 'Iron Man'. I enjoyed seeing the world of Asgard, though the stuff on Earth is a little run-of-the-mill.
Chris Hemsworth is enjoyable and looks the part as Thor, while Tom Hiddleston plays his role more than satisfactorily. Cool to see Idris Elba appear, even if he is underused in the grand scheme of things - as are Stellan Skarsgård and Natalie Portman in truth.
The Revisit the MCU Project (2021) #4 of 23
Just about everything with Thor is good. Very good sound, an amazing casting job where just about every actor does a good job, and it looks rather good, If only the story hadn't let it a bit down, this would be a classic.
First and foremost, this movie is filled to the brim with great actors. Casting Hemsworth as Thor has to be the best decision any casting agent has ever done, and just about every role is filled with the perfect actor for the role. Not many movies can boast that.
Second...The visuals and sound are very good when you think about the fact that this movie is actually close to 10 years old. I can still remember when I first saw Asgaard and Bifrost.
And then...we have the story. At first, it's a straight-up origin story, and a good one at that, but then it goes on a tangent that doesn't work that well. It almost ends up a mix between a small-town comedy and a romantic drama. I wish they would have gone for something more...epic.
Don't get me wrong though...Thor works rather well despite the shortcomings of the story. It's highly entertaining for the most part, and it has that glint in the eye we all love about most of the MCU movies. I almost enjoyed this rewatch as much as when I saw it the first time in the cinemas. To me, Thor ranks up there with the best of them...almost.
As the final battle rages on Asgard, Thor's new squeeze Jane is limited to occasional shots of her glaring up at the sky, which is as it should be since Thor's time on Earth has literally no impact.
This is a good lead-in for Thor's incorporation into "The Avengers" but it's not a must see comic book movie.
THE WACPINE OF ‘THOR’
WRITING: 7

CHARACTERS: 9
PRODUCTION: 9

The Good:
Thor holds a special place in my heart. This was the first MCU film I ever saw and it made Thor one of my favourite superheroes. His first solo film is not his best one, but it's a great mix of Norse mythology, science fiction and superhero action.
The first act effectively sets up Asgard and its inhabitants and gives us basic context, without feeling too heavy on exposition. The scenes set on Earth are the truly interesting and funny bits, as we see Thor having to accept his newfound situation.
I love the mix of futuristic technology and Norse history in the production design of this film. It gives Asgard a distinct look while fitting perfectly with the visual style of the rest of the franchise.
Chris Hemsworth is both dashing and funny as the Thunder God while Tom Hiddleston is spot-on as his devious half-brother Loki. It is Hiddleston's performance here and in The Avengers that makes him one of the better film villains of all time. Anthony Hopkins was born to play the mighty and booming Odin and fits that role perfectly.
Stellan Skarsgård, Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings make for a wonderful sidekick trio. They are among my favourite supporting characters in any MCU film so far. Portman is so sweet with Hemsworth and captures both the clever and beautiful side of Jane well. They have better on-screen chemistry than almost any other MCU couple.
All supporting characters are used well, particularly the Asgardians headed by Lady Sif during the battle with the Destroyer. The climactic sequence between Thor and Loki is tense and dramatic and contains some of the best actings the MCU has seen.
The Bad:
Despite its interesting mix of fantasy and science fiction, Thor isn't as memorable or exciting as Thor: Ragnarök or as dark and moody as Thor: The Dark World. The script builds up a threat slowly and remains predictable throughout.
Like Iron Man 2 before it, this is another slower film, focusing more on Thor's journey than superhero action. The build-up is so slow you barely notice it.
Kenneth Branagh is not an action movie director, which shows in the way he chooses to focus on the characters in an almost Shakespearian tale rather than typical superhero action. It makes the film somewhat slow at times but doesn’t affect the overall enjoyment much.
Unlike Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, who was introduced in and well used throughout Iron Man 2, Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is nothing else than a pointless cameo that adds nothing to this film.
The Ugly:
Frost Giants that look like White Walkers from Game of Thrones.
WACPINE RATING: 8.00 / 10 = 4 stars

Thor, even in the comics is one of my least favourite characters and in the MCU for a while, he was as well. This film can be a little boring at times, but it set everything up for the character and though they tried their best with the character. I didn't find the character likeable and I don't think that is Chris Hemsworth (Thor) fault and some of the other characters aren't great either as I didn't like any of the characters from earth, with Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) being the only expectation in my opinion. But the one thing this film does great is setup the character of Loki played by Tom Hiddleston, portraying this character perfectly and getting better with every movie.
The action in this movie is pretty good and the scenes on Asgard stand out as it looks so extravagant, I believed that this was a different world entirely as it looked so beautiful. It's a fine film, I imagine younger viewers might get bored but comic book fans will find things to like about this film.
Not bad, not bad at all, but they didint have a lot of action
A solid enough popcorn muncher that never even hints at reaching a deeper level. Chris Hemsworth does what he sets out to, making waves with his appearance if not his acting, while Natalie Portman tries in vain to turn her uncertain supporting role into something more significant. It's really two films under one heading, as the developments in Thor's celestial homeworld of Asgard provide gorgeous vistas but no meat, and the fish-out-of-water character moments of the god of thunder fallen to Earth deliver good-natured, if shallow, fun.
With a few listless fight scenes thrown in to stir the waters, Thor never runs the risk of growing stagnant but also doesn't give its audience much to think about. It's all spelled out with no regard for subtlety, hammered into the pre-planned groundwork for Marvel's upcoming Avengers mega-pic with the kind of blunt nuance one might expect from a character known primarily for his rash, impatient brawn. I had fun, but it didn't leave me clamoring for a follow-up.
Character development. That's what :o
"A surprisingly adept mixture of comic book goofiness and epic mythos, filled with bright colors and beautiful production design."
Portman you are godness! Nice movie enjoyed it and i liked plot 7.3/10
[Pre-Endgame MCU Rewatch] What's great about this movie is that we see Thor grow from an self-righteous egotistical silver platter boy to the more thoughtful and nuanced Thor we see in the later MCU. Similarly Loki goes through his own phase of self-discovery and starts making big (dumb) decisions based on emotion which is his staple. He's not at his best here yet.
What's not so great about this movie is the romantic subplot which was completely unbelievable for time the short time Jane Foster and Thor had spent together which consisted mostly of driving him around. While I can see some earthling swooning over Thor, there really was no need to add this and it didn't matter for the plot in any way.
First appearance of Hawkeye is okay, they really don't know how to use this guy properly and I feel it could've been anyone else. Coulson is fantastic as always and I enjoy his increased role in this film.
Kenneth Branagh made a super-hero movie, this is about as good as that idea could ever have been.
Thor is a surprisingly small movie, revisiting this film now feels slightly strange given what we have since seen of the character. Branagh was always the wrong choice to direct a Marvel movie especially during a time were the studio had far more say than any of their filmmakers. It’s worth revising this film to set up the Avengers but other than that it isn’t anything special.
I see her again with my nephew, it is curious to see what they do here Loki and Thor after seeing them in the Avengers movies that were later. Anyway, it's still the 1 of solitaire character that I like the least
Despite stellar casting choices, this movie was crippled by bad writing and misdirection (Sorry, Kenneth). It was still entertaining (Chris Hemsworth's always worth watching and this role belongs to him, as we will see in future Adventure movies) but it could have been so much better. Even on rewatching, I can only give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. [Marvel Action Adventure]
I think the comic book character Thor is awesome, but despite that I find this film a lot less. I had too little connection with some characters and the dialogues were often overdramatic. However, I did enjoy this Viking-Steampunk / Science-Fiction mashup, but maybe that was more because of the appearance of Nathalie Portman... And Tom Hiddleston, of course, as the perfect impersonation of Loki!
The film itself did not really convince, but is a good introduction to Thor, Loki and Hawkeye.
Watched few times and it still doesn't get boring… it has to be something in it ;)
It might not get sexier than Chris Hemsworth. Hubba hubba.
It's a fine superhero movie. I've realized going back to these that we are spoiled with the current superhero movies. Thor is a totally different person in Ragnarok and it pretty much changes the whole tone of the movie. This Thor is much more serious and the story feels a little more grounded. It's a simple story but entertaining. Thor's fish out of water is good for a few laughs. Loki is an interesting villain. Jane is kinda useless and the romance between her and Thor feels forced. The cinematography is really weird in this movie. There were way too many dutch angle shots. It felt like almost of other shot was angled for no reason.
And why isn't Jeremy Renner credited? No love for Hawkeye?
The big issue with this movie is the romance. It feels forced and is totally cheesy. Plus Natalie Portman, whos character is supposed to be a brilliant scientist, acts like a 12 year old who just fell in love for the first time. Maybe she was written that way but in any way it does not help sell the character.
Otherwise an entertaining movie that further builds up the MCU. They should have opened the movie directly in Asgaard and not with the introduction of the scientist.
If you are picking a Marvel film to skip, pick this or the sequel, some cool & entertaining stuff, but ultimately just a filler film.
Thor-oughly entertained by this one.
Enjoyable Marvel origin movie from Kenneth Branagh (Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit) bringing the mighty Asgardian God played by Chris Hemsworth (Ca$h, Blackhat, Rush), who actually pulls off a great first Major Role performance as the Son of Odin who gets banished to Earth leaving Loki (Thor's Brother) to played by Tom Hiddleston (War Horse) to rather good effect (that's us British for you, evil mastermind's we are lol). Add a little love interest in Dr Jane Foster played by the ever wonderful Natalie Portman (Leon, Heat, Black Swan) and some rather spiffing Visual Effects and you have the making of a good (not great) fantasy movie. Luckily, we had Avengers Assemble and Thor Dark World which only cermented Thor's character in the new Cinematic Universe, good fun, little too long and can be very, very slow at times. Enjoyable but it doesn't make me want to see it often.

Luckily, we had Avengers Assemble and Thor Dark World which only cermented Thor's character in the new Cinematic Universe, good fun, little too long and can be very, very slow at times. Enjoyable but it doesn't make me want to see it often.
Another great, well-made comic book movie. For more, see the review:

Finally a decent fantasy movie, a shame that it has a lot of cliche and traces from LOTR but still excellent.
All of this buzz about the new film Thor: The Dark World made wanna finally see this! I am for seeing it since it came out and for no special reason, I never did until today.
What a great superhero film! Much better than I expected! Some people had said to me that the Thor film wasn't nothing special but I actually think that it was quite good. It entertained me from the very beginning!
I loved the fact that for a person that doesn't know all of the aspects of Marvel's world, start the film introducing Thor and is origins was very good. The action scenes were awesome and visually is amazing!
The cast is so good! Chris Hemsworth is the perfect Thor and Tom Hiddleston is a great villian. Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba are always great to see on screen.
Now I totally wanna go see Thor: The Dark World at the cinema!
Great movie. Cant wait to see Dark World in 6 days.
Xena, Jackie-Chan, Robin-Hood and... Hammerhead in action ;)
Watching it again, noticed Hawkeye for the first time haha. Never knew he was in this.
decent marvel movie.
awesome
Odd twist after the credits as well, so make sure you watch that. I posted my comment below while the credits were rolling lol.
I thought the movie was pretty good. I'm not that great with the whole back story on Thor but enjoyed what action was in the movie.
I also have to agree with the below comment about Iron Man, it was nicely done.
@portmerchant5 if you watched the interview with the director, there was a lot of stuff they couldn't do because of the over hanging Avengers Movie that this leads into. The original script was a lot closer to the source
Destroyer was sorta awesome..but only for 5 minutes...Why do Gods pop out of the sky in some Western Hick Town anyway? Anthony Hopkins takes a nap half way through the film...Loki was evil but he was also very polite..arrrghh!
Next time please read the material before you make a movie..yeah this is directed at you..freakin' Hollywood Monkeys!!
Why did I put a ' in were? lol...
I like it even though I was a bit disappointed - I thought it's gonna be 2h full of action, but in the end it was just about maybe 45 minutes.
They could've really done more with that destroyer machine - it was almost over before it even started!!! There was a lot of time spend describing the characters so ... there's no prequel for sure. I like the outcome and how they displayed Odin, Asgard & especially Heimdall and Bifröst.
The soundtrack is great and Chris Hemsworth did an amazing job in his role. So I can't wait to see him and all the other marvel heroes again in "The Avengers" (2012).
I couldn't really get into it even though it was an excellent movie. With movies like Iron Man, X-Men or Spiderman we see how they get their powers and struggle with their own identity and see them grow to the supermen they are now. I kind of missed that in this movie.
Great movie indeed. I assume that we should wait for second movie. :)
The trailer had made me what Kenneth Branagh saw in the project, so it was a very welcome surprise that it was fantastic.

Strong cast, great premise and perfect setup for The Avengers. The SFX weren't what they could have been but it didn't take anything away from the film. Thoroughly entertaining.
