Thor: Ragnarok 2017

An exercise in cliche and coinidence. The special effects are cheap-looking and obviously made for 3D.

Question: When did they decide that every Marvel movie has to have the exact tone of Guardians of the Galaxy?

What a fresh relief from formula. No hammer, no problem. Loved this film thoroughly.

This movie has way too much comedy. It was okay but it definitely was not the best Marvel movie. I really could not take this movie seriously

loading replies

Holy shit, why was this so funny?! :D :D :D I really love comedy, laughing can save anyone from the most negative feelings but sometimes I have a feeling that the Marvel movies go a bit too far with that. Every single Marvel is funnier than the one before. I wonder where that will lead to.

Seeing a speaking and laughing Hulk made my day hahaha and Cate Blanchett fits perfectly into the role of Hela, very good choice! And Korg was hilarious, I mean wtf. :D Aaand good to see Loki again, more or less ignoring the tesseract to save everyone, but his little sneak to the tesseract was priceless!

I knew that the movie was going full comedy with a twist of an indie production, but sadly we found a very similar movie to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1, having many similarities in the design of the cities, clothes and spaceships. We lose what made Thor movies interesting, and that's the nordic references. Loki plays his most boring role in the MCU, he basically does nothing related to the plot, just repeating the same "I hate you" actions as always. However, Thor does evolve, having a more interesting development in his relations with other characters. You will have fun with this film, but it's far from the best of Marvel movies.

Weird as hell sci fi, fantasy and conedy. Seems like a bit of a mess and that is because it follows no standard tropes of storytelling. A multi million dollar gamble that is sure to polarize fans and critics. Not that there is anything wrong with that. 7/10

Hela was one of the better villains in the Marvel Universe movies so far. The ending scenes with Surtur destroying Asgard is one of the most nightmarish visions of some kind of Hell I've ever seen in a movie.

Hemsworth is such a likable actor that he saves the Thor character's overdone penchant for bringing the funny. Cate Blanchett is very cool as bad sister Hela.

I didn't need another "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie. While I enjoyed "Thor: Ragnarok", it tried WAY too hard too be funny. It's disappointing that superhero movies are basically comedies now, with the success of the aforementioned "GotG" movies, "Deadpool", Downey's Tony Stark, Spiderman...even Hulk is a comic these days. I guess that's what the masses want so it's being delivered en masse.

I was still entertained, but both Marvel and DC movies have become cookie-cutter and predictable.

loading replies

How did this happen?

Thor: Ragnarok is everything I wanted it to be. Taika Waititi is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today and it is great to see a major studio allow such a unique voice to make the exact film that they wanted to without sacrificing their creativity. This is not only one of the best Marvel films but one of the best straight comedies of the decade. I cannot wait to see what Waititi has in store in the future.

loading replies

Happy they got rid of Portman, hated her!
Anyways, nice movie, could've been better, if not for some plot holes here and there.

loading replies

This is more comedy than action but did I feel like I was cheated of watching a super-hero movie? Absolutely not! And the comedy is in from the beginning. You can't stop laughing throughout all the serious moments because there's a wise-crack right in the middle of it. I think that was needed since there wasn't much of a story to follow and yet entertainment was thoroughly provided.

The best moments have been the fight of Hulk against Thor and Thor ignited like God of the Thunder, that not of the hammers.

I still remember watching it and how I reacted to some scenes that totally surprised me. It was so good, one of the best movies Marvel has ever made. Besides we get to know more about Asgard and what it was like before, how Asgard was conquered and the secrets he kept from his sons.

loading replies

The amount of jokes in the film is such that it becomes a parody losing the essence of what would be a superhero action movie

A good fun movie which doesn't take itself too seriously, that's the way superhero movies should be

Who doesn't love the combination of Hulk and Thor for the ultimate battle of the Gods. This is the funnier combination of the Marvel Universe, diving deep into the Asgardian story with a comedic twist. Enjoy the ride, its a light movie and filled with action. Thor was the main character but the Hulk just shined in this movie, simple as that.

After Spiderman now this ?!?! If this is the direction Marvel is going with its movies than this was the last one I watched. It is already the first I quit watching. Never got into it, bored after 15 min out after 15 more. Even Cate Blanchett, of whom I am an avid admirer, could not convince me to watch more. Way to much comedy and what's worse, comedy without niveau. I am not opposed to comedy but at the right amount and at the right time. If every second scene/sentence is a joke than basically your whole movie becomes one. As someone wrote: all that was missing was the laughter from the off.

loading replies

Unlike most of the other Marvel movies (except maybe Guardians), this is a transcendental thrill ride. The story is a little weak, but there is still a lot of fun to be had. From the director of one of my fave movies of last year, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, this retains much of that film's humour, with a few of the cast members popping up occasionally. The film will probably divide Marvel diehards, but I'm glad the execs allow for some creative diversions to keep things fresh within the series.

loading replies

I can't believe I slept on that movie for that long. The best MCU entry in my opinion. What I always liked about Thor is that he doesn't take himself too seriously and this movie is a great example of that. (also fat Thor obviously) He hits that good spot between Peter Parker whom you can't take seriously and Mr. Serious aka. Captain America. Also the action scenes are EPIC!

loading replies

Thor Ragnarok showed once again that Marvel allows a lot of liberty in the personalities of characters.

I really liked the direction Taika Waititi took with this film, and had a lot of fun with it, but the characters all felt like comedic pawns. This wasn't as bad as Avengers: Age of Ultron in this respect, but still bugged me at times for the continuity of the MCU.

As for the movie, the acting was great, the story was fun, and it fits right in with the plot. I really appreciated the creative license afforded to Taika Waititi allowing for what is probably the quirkiest MCU Movie to date.

Would recommend for a fun, comedic, super hero movie.

The Revisit the MCU Project (2021) #17 of 23

Rewatching good movies is easy, and Thor: Ragnarok is a good movie.
I think I said everything I wanted to say about it in my last review.

Ok...so...yeah...hmm.

I feel a bit guilty liking this...

Somehow my mind says that this is yet another cookie-cutter Marvel movie, but...well...I had a good time watching Thor: Ragnarok. Actually...I had a VERY good time watching Thor: Ragnarok.

The comedy is great, the action scenes and effects borders on brilliant, the music IS brilliant, and the story and acting...well...this IS a Marvel movie. You can't expect everything to be up to par.

To be serious for a moment, if you are into the Marvel universe, don't miss this one. It's one the better of the later Marvel outings. Mainly because it's a bit different. Watch it, and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, yeah...I know...it's actually more on par with the latest movies...not better, but I guess I was rather excited when I wrote that.

Thor: Ragnarok is good...trust me.

I have to say honestly i expected something else from Thor:Ragnarok, something better actually.Im a big marvel fan and this is not what Thor is. Please leave the comedy for comedy heroes like deadpool or GotG. This "hero saga" its more mature than jokes about Hulk being the stupidest avenger...Its funny but i dont think its supposed to be funny,i laughed more than i got thrilled, and i think thrill and those scared/surprised inspirations that where acomplished much better in Civil War for example were lacking in this movie. You got to rethink your choices, the destruction of Asgard,Thors home, should be more significant, even though Asgard its not the place, its still where Thor grew.
I hope they dont do the same in Black Panther and Infinity Wars...

Very well paced, doesn't take itself too serious. Just an extremely accessible and fun film. The mashup of themes and the cinematography were spot on. I can't really put the film into words, it just gives you a feeling. As cheesy as that may sound.

Hilarious! I never actually felt any suspense regarding the conflict/plot, but all characters were great and Hela (Cate Blanchett) sure had me swooning.

Thor: Ragnarok

A movie deserving of the characters of Thor and The Hulk.

A heavily stylised action packed and humorous ride on an 80's acid dream.

Pacing was a little off and the plot was terribly cliché in parts

Goldblum and Waititi were gems.

It premiered here in Brazil yesterday, and i just saw it... DAMN, TAIKA WAITITI, YOU SAVED THOR'S FRANCHISE! I really, really enjoyed this movie. Fun and action packed, this third movie of the Lord of Thunder, oops, God of Thunder, is really good. Great performances (hello Cate Blanchett, you slayed!), some plot twists and a great ending. Just pay attention to the first post-credits scene ;) I will totally see it again on theater!

Marvel has finally done it - a fantastic Thor movie. Much like other movies by Taika Waititi, the humour is fantastic - my audience had full-on laughter countless times in the film. All actors play their parts extremely well, the cinematography for a few shots is amazing and there are a lot of extra cameos to watch out for including some from Waititi's previous films. It could be argued that the film has pacing issues at the start but if you're up-to-date with the Marvel universe you'll enjoy this fresh approach to the start of a film within the franchise. As always with Marvel movies, there are two extra scenes so stay all the way through the credits (although the more important scene is the first one)

So, they turned this into a comedy?... Well, I'm cool with that, I had a lot of fun with this movie! :D
It's all very reminiscent of "Guardians of the Galaxy" (the colourful scenery and characters, even the '80s style soundtrack), it feels like they were trying to see if the same formula would stick on a different franchise. And guess what? It did. Be warned, though, this movie can get quite hilarious, at times, to the point of it actually being weirdly hilarious, considering the kind of movie it is and the tone of its predecessors.

Even though it sort of feels a bit out of place in a Thor movie, the retrowave soundtrack is great (for those of you who care about this sort of thing)!

If you want a FUN superhero movie, forget "Homecoming" (unfortunately, since I'm a Spidey fan), "Ragnarok" is what you'll want to see. I guarantee you that the fun is, huh, guaranteed.

loading replies

Never been a fan of the Thor movies till I watched this one that used the right hammer and hits the nail in the right spot, specially with It's humour and action also loved It's opening. Collection worthy.

Thor: Ragnarok is the "Friends" of Marvel movies. Thor is Chandler, The Hulk is Joey and Ross is Doctor Strange. It's good light entertainment, but I still prefer Suicide Squad.

loading replies

if I could inject the immigrant song scene into my bloodstream and live off of it I would

loading replies

I didn't like it on my first watch but come to like it on rewatch. The characters are too good.

loading replies

Outside of that epic cover used for the first trailer of Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Ragnarok has some of my favorite uses of Zeppelin's Immigrant Song in movies.

Kinda hard to fuck up using Led Zeppelin in a movie; hell, even Damon sputtering the lyrics to Kashmir in the "lost in translation" scene in Ocean's Twelve was one of the biggest highlights of that movie.

loading replies

i can’t believe someone deadass had to sit and animate hulk’s bare ass

loading replies

We see Skurge the Excutioner using machine guns against Hela's forces, which is something that did occur in the comics, the cover of Thor# 362 shows Skurge doing this. The story arc this occurs in is after the one involving Malekith and the Dark elves as shown in Thor The Dark World where the elves invaded Earth and Assgardian forces stopped them. Another Assgardian, Harokin, got the firearms from soem U.S. soldiers and brought them to Assgard where they were given to Skurge so he could hold off Hela's forces.

loading replies

The heavens shake as Thor fights for the survival of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. When Odin dies after being exiled to Earth, his daughter Hela, the Goddess of Death, is released from her prison and returns to Asgard intent on conquering the nine realms; and when Thor and Loki stand up to her they’re banished to a rogue world run by the Grandmaster, who forces Thor to fight in gladiatorial combat. Cate Blanchett is quite good as the villain, as is Karl Urban as her henchman. However, Jeff Goldblum phones in his performance and seems incredibly out of place. The action scenes are extraordinarily fun and exciting, and director Taika Waititi does an amazing job at giving the film a visually rich and interesting look. Also, the whimsical-humor works especially well, keeping the tone light and upbeat. Thor: Ragnarok brings new life to the series and shows how rich and storied each part of the Marvel Universe is.

loading replies

My biggest issue with this movie is that for a movie with Ragnarok in its title, Ragnarok plays a shockingly small part in the movie's story. There's so much cool stuff in Norse mythology when it comes to Ragnarok, this epic apocalyptic event, and the movie just brushes it aside for a goofy story about Thor and Hulk on Sakaar. I just wish this was split into two different movies.

loading replies

I generally regard comic book movies as little more than breezy summer movies to watch outside on the patio. This film felt like it offered a bit more for someone like me. First, I thought it was pretty funny in many areas. Second, the addition of fantastic actors such as (the ridiculously underrated) Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum really added a lot to the movie.

'Thor: Ragnarok' continues the upward direction of the 'Thor' films.

I had a blast with this. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the story unfold, the score is terrific, the new and old cast members are great and there's a lot of amusement in there too. It's superb, it's my third favourite MCU film at this stage.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 2011 original but that's turned out to be the weakest of the three. I found 'Thor: The Dark World' to be a fairly major improvement on that, this 2017 is narrowly better than that aforementioned 2013 release. Bring on 'Thor: Love and Thunder'!

Chris Hemsworth is quality in the lead role, I found him super enjoyable in this second sequel. Big fan of his new hairstyle, by the way. This is also the most I liked Tom Hiddleston in an MCU film. Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett and, particularly, Tessa Thompson are fab additions. Shoutout to (director, as well!) Taika Waititi also, he made me laugh a fair few times as Korg.

Great film, oh and I love the nod to a certain 1971 Quaker Oats Company-induced film... nicely done.
