I just did NOT get this movie. Everything felt disjointed and kind of like I was watching at least two different movies at once.
A lot of the time, I felt the music didn't connect with the action, and things didn't really come across at all.
I have enjoyed the earlier Michael Bay Transformer movies, but this one just let me wondering what I just saw.
In some ways, this is probably the best Transformers films yet and is certainly a step above the last two. Bay has managed to tone down the offensiveness to a degree and the human characters within the film are marginally less annoying than the previous ones. The plot still makes no sense and is just an excuse to string some action sequences together, but then that could be said about many summer blockbuster films. Bay certainly has visual flair, but his editing style remains confusing at best and here the visual spectacle of watching Transformers do their thing has become stale after three films. Even the complex shots of many of the robots mechanically transforming have been replaced with some far less visually interesting. But Bay's biggest problem is his consistent misunderstanding of what should be his target audience - young children who buy the toys, not the teenage boys who have long since moved on from playing with them. The overt leering shots at some of the women in the film have been toned down a little (though only Bay could have one of his characters tell his teenage daughter to put some clothes on whilst the camera focuses on her figure) but the film remains overly long and dull and for many young children far too intense and violent despite the survival of the majority of human characters amid the carnage. It also still astounds how many excuse these films as summer blockbusters that are intended to be bombastic and that audience members should leave their brains at the door and just enjoy it - yet fail to understand that films like this require a modicum of interest and emotional investment in the characters for them to entertain at this basic level.
Well, this isn't a good movie, but I managed to watch the whole thing. The only other time that's happened with a "Transformers" movie is the original. "Age of Extinction" is long and there's so much action that it saps all of the excitement out of it.
I'm actually giving it a decent rating because Mark Wahlberg is a fun actor to watch. He seems like the kind of dude you want to have a beer with while watching a ball game. And the effects are really amazing. They've gotten to the point where the live action and effects are convincingly combined. Other than that, you know what you're going to get in a "Transformers" movie, people running away from explosions caused by brightly colored robots.
i hope next Transformers movie be something different than extinction of humans and optimus prime fighting megatron!! always same story!!
why autobots dont die while decepticons die very easily?!?!
One question: Why? :o :D It has action and some fun but there isn't really much besides that. I mean, it's not that bad, but it didn't feal meaningful at all. It kinda was just frustrating and embarrassing to watch as it shows humanity from such a bad side and it doesn't even feel that far fetched. Sure lots of things were just stupid but it's not totally unimaginable, unfortunately...
Anyway, this time even the intro (opening credits) was boring. Why did they stop using those sounds? At least the space ship scene that came right after that was kinda cool.
The biggest improvement seemed that the camera shots at daytime looked much better. At least on Netflix this isn't available in 4K but the scenes with enough natural light looked sharp and beautiful. The scenes at night do unfortunately look worse than they should (I mean, the cameras couldn't've been that bad at that time, right?!?).
And then the bad story of the last movie repeated itself. Bad humans do bad things. Some crazy black ops that no one seems to care about. Lukas died (that sucked... :o he was one of my favorite characters... and his little car (Mini) was cool :D but at least he was the one who called the cops).
Optimus Prime looked like complete shit. Then he was suddenly able to fight and a bit after that he transformed into his old self and suddenly looked like new. WTF?!? And why didn't he try to hide by transforming into something else while they were chased by the cops?
Some new types of transformers. A chopper, dinosaurs, dogs, etc. And then there are those Transformers 2.0 that the humans created. It feels like they should be basically unkillable (they don't have a spark, can transform into anything, out of nothing) but somehow they still are.
Some very poor gun aim, IIRC.
"Aliens would never do that to people."
And at that point it started to feel a bit like crap... :o
Then "The Creators" were mentioned. That seems interesting but we didn't really learn much(/anything) about them.
And last but not least we got to see mechanical dinosaurs in a Transformers movie. At that point I found the beautiful landscape more interesting though (lots of bright green nature, a waterfall, rocks, etc. - looked quite cool/nice).
PS: And the whole time I was super unsure if I've even seen this movie before. A few things felt familiar but mostly at the beginning (so it could be from the trailer). I probably wasn't paying attention back then, was too tired, or it was just too boring, etc. I basically didn't know what would happen next at all...
Ok...
So this is where I left this franchise last time around. I saw Age of Extinction in the cinema and was not that impressed. Mind you, I still liked the action and of course the giant battles, but this ended up being way too long for the story it tried to tell. Can't really say it was boring, but it came close. This rewatch did little to change that opinion.
The most negative thing, IMO, wasn't the lack of story. It was the blatant China pandering going on in the latter parts. One example: “Gotta call the central government for help”, and then you see a Chinese official take that call...then nothing comes out of it. They just needed to get that in there. That Hong Kong needed their help...
I won't say that I didn't have a bit of fun rewatching Age of Extinction, but it wasn't the all out fun time like the others have been. A story with a little more meat on the bone might have done the trick...
Anyway...Since I haven't seen the last Transformers movie, nor Bumblebee, I'm going into unfamiliar waters next. Wish me luck!!!
Hey, Michael Bay. Stop it and get some help, please.
It was comical to say the least. This movie series ran into the ground by Michel Bay, and I hope it doesn't get a sequel to make it any worse.
The movie has some serious pacing issues. Oh, and amount of product placement... it's just too much.
Almost three hours of mediocrity. I liked the dinobots though.
The visuals are good. But thats all. for a run time of almost 3 hours thats not enough.
So many things are wrong with the story.
Holy shit! This has got to be the biggest movie ever made! It's as American as, as, bullets, bombs and delicious, homemade red, white and blue pie. It's got a little of everything.
It's got references to; The Bourne Identity, Jurassic Park, Kung fu with 'fighting powder' (Jackie Chan style), Excalibur/The Sword in the Stone/King Arthur (take your pick), car and motorbike chases and a great sound track that will have you waving Old Glory this July 4th. Rock and Roll baby, time to crank Skynyrd's Free Bird to 11!
The CGI, EXPLOSIONS and fight sequences (both human and Transformers) are all tops (over the top and in your face, bitch!). Hong Kong, it's your turn. You get blown-up, sucked-up and crushed to dust and metal. At least your streets are made of really soft stuff for those injury-free landings...from skyscraper heights. :P
A fun, popcorn chomping, Summer Citybuster of a movie, if ever there was one. Leave your beliefs at the theater entrance, it ain't wanted around these parts. If this isn't Michael Bay's most out of this world/galaxy/known-universe movie to date, I'm dumbfounded as to what is. I can't wait to see how he's going to top this.
Even Steven Spielberg (Executive Producer) had to get in on the action! He went; "WTF Bay!?! I need some of this!!" LOL! WOW, what a ride. I was totally (over)entertained. 8/10
Could have used more T.J. Miller for comic relief. Well since these movies love the human characters so much. Some of the plot is good but the movie is too long. With a creepy subplot about the Wahlberg's underage daughter dating a older guy.
@Arias That's exactly what I was/am thinking.
But first I'm excited to see "Pain & Gain" :)
:heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart: - Happy to see more screen time for Transformers and impressive visuals.
Here's how my rating system works:

I'm currently watching all transformers movies again because i never saw any past the third one. And the thing is that when you do multiple movies in the same universe, when you have movies back to back with no continuing characters; it always feels wrong. And in this case is no exception. In the first three, we already had some wild cards like random new autobots being part of the team in each new movie, or the new "love interest" of Sam in the third one; but usually the rest of the recurring characters (both humans and robots) "held" the continuity together mostly fine. But in this case, the only linking thing between this movie and the previous 3 are like 2 or 3 autobots (if we count Brains) and a couple of easter eggs and shallow references; and thats it. The thing is that it feels weird that being in the same planet, on the same timeline and such, and the characters of Sam, Simmons, Lennox and Epps and many more, didn't "get involved" in the whole incident. Bumblebee, who Sam was "his best friend" doesn't reference, talk or even think about him the whole movie. I know, is just a movie; and on top of that, is just a Transformers one, not a great deal. But still feels off balance and contribute to a lower story telling quality.
Besides all that, the story itself is weak. So are the main characters; although i got to admit is at least better that the "human" main element is more combative that what Sam was; which in the whole 3 movies is just running around from here to there and hiding and screaming. The other main characters are meh. The movie gets barely a 5. I'm still 3 movies down to go, but seeing this i get the sense to where they are going to stand.
Optimus Prime was looking bad ass, riding a cyber dinosaur, legendary ones being or whatever it's called.
Seriously, aside from being insufferably long, I thought this was the best movie of the franchise up to this point. Gone are most of the shallow, dimwitted main characters - although Stanley Tucci's character starts to get goofy toward the end - and this time around, there was an actual attempt to give a little time to the other Autobots besides Optimus and Bumblebee. The design of both the Autobots and Decepticons is still shit, and the Decepticons are still nameless, faceless hunks of silver metal with barely any distinguishing features, but overall, I thought the story was pretty good and the cast and writing this time around brought more of a serious element to the franchise. I'm sure Shia LaBoleouf is a swell guy, but I was happy to see his character depart.
8.5/10
Really Good
This is by far the best
Transformers movie up
till this point, when it
gets going it's actually
Frickin Awesome and
a step up above all
the previous Installments.
I love Mark and the work
he does so having him
front and centre was a
Big win for me.
Tess hm....anyway
The stakes felt so desperate
in this and we definitely had
to fight to get a win,
The odds never felt so
stacked and for that
I applaud.
The Dino-Bots we're
always my favourite
so obviously this was my
Favourite part of the movie
but I must say this is my
favourite installment of the
hole franchise as this
movie is an ass-kicker
and past all the human
stuff It ends up being
a lot of fun.
"Age of Extinction" was the last film in the Transformers franchise that I have seen in theaters so far. And there are good reasons for that: Director Michael Bay proved this time that you can make even worse sequels to already terrible movies. I remember very well that I left the cinema with a severe headache and nausea. The blame lies with the badly directed action, which literally makes you sick to your stomach—and that for a whole 165 minutes. Meanwhile, there's no need to talk about the story, which, of course, remains stupid. Furthermore, there is distracting pandering to China. Mark Wahlberg, meanwhile, is no upgrade over Shia LaBeouf as the lead. In the supporting roles, again, good actors are relegated to executing a terrible script. Fortunately, with Part 5, I'm only missing one more Transformers film from Bay.
I wish this movie didn't exist even more than the previous ones. Bumblebee has been the only decent one. Quite how something so good can be done so badly beggars belief.
The humans got worse, I don't necessarily mean just acting wise, they just became assholes, they killed Ratchet for crying out loud, "my sister got killed in Chicago, you'll get no sympathy from me." What the Fuck? Who cares! The whole planet coulda got wiped out or even as low as the city, but go off I guess. I hate humans who say that shit in any sci-fi or superhero-type shit. Like okay, fuck you since you rather everyone die than someone you knew or family; like I would be grateful that other people got to live and not fucking turn into slaves or just outright killed. Like I get having everything be roses and flowers and shit would be boring but like jeez, at least the last three movies had human characters, I mean human-like in that they aren't just stuck in their ways and stuff. But maybe people would act this way in real life. I do like the idea though, not gonna lie. But still makes me mad how they get treated.
Mark Wahlberg's and Jack Reynor's characters are the only sane ones, everyone else is a paranoid asshat. If anyone needs to get pissed on like in the first movie, it would be the CIA guys, like jeez. T.J. Miller is great, as always. And where is Sam in all of this? Like I get they or he himself might not have wanted to be in any more of these movies but still, just feels incomplete. Also, love Oreo-Bot, he's so cool! One of the Dinobots made the Godzilla sound and it was cool!
Needed to shave an hour off this film and it could have been different, such a waste of a great cast
Will this revitalize the franchise? New cast. Finally. A human plot. Moving away from teenage centric human story to family (dad) centric. Non-CGI car chases. You can tell they were trying to find some magic to pull their audience back in. Still all the CGI action that is expected. I'm going to go from the 4 (poor) I gave the last instalment to a 6 (fair) out of 10 for this one. Despite how the franchise stutters it still seems to make lots of money. [SciFi Action Adventure]
It's time for this series to transform and roll out
Drama :(
Depressing and anti-human film with a strong warning.
Replace the aliens with terrorists and have a picture of they so-called "Free World".
Totally awesome movie, I LOVE EXPLOSIONS!!!!11111
Age of Extinction probably has the worst plot of all the transformers. It's like they didn't even try to develop a story line. It's over 2 1/2 hours of explosions and CGI with cool but uninteresting characters.
For me, this forth installment is the best Tranformers movie to date. While I watched and even re-watched the three previous movies (which means I liked them quite a bit) I could never get past the fact that the original movie had some laughable moments (e.g. the NSA-Kiddies from college who just happen to detect the security breach? Or the black "Hacker"? I mean, come on, you could have done better then THAT, right?! Additionally I found the US army guys very incredulous!) and that the third and especially the second movie were not much more than very entertaining propaganda movies for the U.S. army with a lot of skin from Megan Fox and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
Therefore it was very welcome for me that in this forth installment of the series:
a) the Autobots did all the fighting with a little help from the humans, and not the humans with the help of the Autobots as in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd movie.
b) that the human help came in the form of a "normal Joe" (and his daughter and boyfriend) instead of some U.S. soldiers.
c) the "skin" in the form of Nicola Peltz is not as obviously just there because "sex sells".
Additionally, the 3D as well as the special effects are the best in the series which make this installment very fun to watch. However, there still are some shortcomings: for example the ending where the Yeagers and Shane hug each other and Joshua says "I can help with that [you do not have a home anymore]" is just laughable. I mean come one, Mr. Bay, could you not have come up with something a little more original for a happy ending? Or what about the short scene where Megatron a.k.a. Galvatron says "We will meet again, Prime... for I am reborn!"? I did not see or hear anything as laughable in a long time and as obviously just to state that there will be a sequel! And then there is the one problem that all the Transformers movie share: during the movie, the "bad guys" (here the man-mad Transformers created by Joshua's company KSI and the Decepticons) are depicted much strong than Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and co. but in the end, the "original" Transformers and the humans can defeat them quite easly.
All in all I would give Transformers 4 an 7.5 / 10 but since that is not possible on Trakt I round it up to an 8 / 10.
To be seen on an 1080p LED giant screen!
EXPLOSIONS AND DINOBOTS WITH A FLAMETHROWER IN THEIR MOUTH
The plot and dialogue was as dumb as you'd expect it to be but the only reason I watched it at all was because the trailer had some admittedly quite spectacular action sequences and in that regard the movie didn't disappoint.
Meaningless gimmickry.
8/10 - will watch again!
Unfortunately I watched this movie. What a piece of crap.
Longesssttt movie ever
One of the worst movies ever seen. Way too long, nonsense connections to different movies and an unbelievable cast. Never thought a transformers movie could end up so bad.
You either love it or you hate it. Goes with the series.
I obviously love it! Hard to top the first as always. But another great cast. Job well done.
Movie was over before I knew it. Wishing for the next two!
Best comedy of the year.
How the hell did they managed to get me bored and wish for its end?
Where is the turkish subs...
Acting good...special effects good...cinematography good...looked great.music good....story sucked ass.
The only good thing about this movie was Stanley Tucci. The rest of it sucked. Big time.
I cannot express how much I hated Tess... she is so utterly useless >.
Too long for what counts, the farm initial to long, fight with dinobots well. That product placement was excesive
Saw this with my wee boy. He absolutely loved it(he's 10). I thought it was ok but wayyyyy too long. Could've done with having at least an hour cut of.
This would have been good if it was half the length. I did not check before seeing the film. I was expecting bland story with lots of explosions and silly action... BUT NOT FOR NEARLY 3 HOURS!!!
It was evident that the people next to me were as bored as I was half way into the movie. You just wanted it to be over. I was close to getting up and just leave. It's not as I would have missed anything story-wise anyway... :|
You would think that there would be room for some story bits in a 3 hour movie...way too long. After seeing 90 minutes of robots and explosions i just lost interest and wanted it to end...Too much of everything except for story.
terrible terrible film.
Worst movie yet in the TF series. Story was sh///t and all the action couldn't make up for it. Too bad!
My god, this was just too much...
To quote Joey Tribiani (from TV show Friends) - Mark Wahlberg good, Optimus Prime good, all the explosions gooooood. ;-)
Unfortunately I am quite disappointed by this movie. Maybe because I really love the "old" ones.
This one is completely different, mostly in a bad way (personal opinion).
Of 160min about 40min was great, 40min was good and the rest "mjä".
It felt like it took to long for the action to really get started.
So T4 will have a hard time finding it's way to my collection. :(
Better luck next time.
Mildly entertaining flick with an uninteresting villain and autobots which by movies end you're asking yourself "what the fuck were their names!?"
The will no be released until 2014. i'm thinking either June or July
Yes, Mark is confirmed to be in the cast: http://michaelbay.com/2012/11/08/michel-bay-re-teams-with-his-pain-gain-star-mark-mark-wahlberg-for-transformers-4/
I'm not sure what I think about this.. I like him as an actor, but I'm not so sure what I think of him in a Transformer movie. Guess time will tell..
Anyhow, I love all of the Transformers, so I'm really psyched about this one!!

Yes, story is thin. Characters are weak - but, hey, it´s Transformers not Shakespeare. Liked it better than the last one. Could have been half an hour shorter, though.
