Underwater kept my attention throughout. It’s well shot with a fine cast, decent performances and plenty of suspense.
The film is definitely better than most underwater creature movies. It doesn’t help that the comparisons are Deepstar Six, Leviathan or Sphere though.
I left out the Abyss since just the marines on board are bad. Otherwise it’s the best underwater science fiction film.
Its a Great movie, I like it
Better than I was expecting, with a little more depth than other movies of this sort. Little chance to catch your breath though as it plunges you headlong into the action from the very beginning.
I like this a lot more than I reasonably should.
It's by no means a cinematic masterpiece but it's a solid thriller that hold the suspense throughout.
If you wanted to be kind you could call it a homage to Alien as they basically copied the Alien plotline and set it under water.
As an Alien fan I guess that would be reason enough to hate it but I can't since they have done it really well and Kristen Stewart tackles the legacy of Commander Ripley spectacularly well.
Stewart totally nails it as a badass mechanic with a grudge against the world and the rest of the cast delivers as well.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Kristen Stewart stars in a Alien-esque movie that is as predictable and boring as the title.
The plot is non existent and there is no setup to the premise, there is no explantion about the company that owns the drilling or what they are drilling, there is no history at all to learn about the base or the characters and the creatures and never explained either.
The actors do an okay job with the parts that were given but not enought to make the characters fleshed out, they are basically walking tropes and the majority can be pretty annoying for most of the movie.
The visuals are meant to give a feeling of claustrophobia but instead are just confusing as the whole movie is to dark to watch and the camera movements in all the action and scape scenes become violent so the viewer is unable to understand what is happening in the shot.
Underwater is a underwhelming horror/Thriller movie that does little to engage the audience with suspence or the sense of adventure and so it becomes a boring shore intead of a thrill ride.
I liked this movie. I saw it specifically after seeing a review on YouTube trashing it for failing at horror and being a bad 'Alien' ripoff. True enough the horror elements aren't that scary, the characters lack development so you're not really concerned for them when they eventually die. All that being said, I really liked this movie. I think more than anything the setting of a deep underwater base was really interesting and provided needed tension more than the monsters. To be honest, I think this movie would have been better if it had been just the crew trying to survive at the ocean floor when something goes wrong without any monsters whatsoever. The movie instilled a sense of danger in me very successfully. I think this is due to the underwater setting. It's similar to space but I think it's more familiar, so we appreciate underwater danger more than space danger. Maybe it's just me. The crew's struggle for survival was engaging and entertaining. Like I said before, maybe it would have been better if the whole movie was about a crew struggling with the environment instead of monsters
Overall, I enjoyed it. Though to be fair I went in with low expectations.
It’s difficult to do a phenomenal film that’s completely underwater, it’s limited.
Overall a good film, starts off with a bang and the action continues until the end.
Good all round performances too. Kristin Stewart isn’t my favourite actress, but she really changed my opinion of her in this; she was excellent and pulled off the part and sheer fear very well.
I only gave it a 7, but a solid 7. I enjoyed it, kept me entertained and through in a couple of surprises.
Amazing how you go through 95 minutes of a narrative and it's physically impossible care about any of it's characters. Nice special effects, tho!
Really liked this "Alien" meets Lovecraft-style story. It felt like a throwback Sci-Fi/Horror tale. You'd think in a place as large as the ocean, there wouldn't be so many claustrophobic moments but there were plenty of tight spaces, from a collapsed drilling station to the pressurized suits that allowed the characters to traverse the ocean floor.
The final monster is quite a spectacular creature. It's where the Lovecraftian touches come into play.
I didn’t expect Slenderman meets Alien underwater, but that’s what I got from this movie. Pleasantly surprised after looking at the poor reviews.
I don't know if it's because I really enjoy underwater scenarios or because I really enjoy Kristen Stewart, because this movie a) was predictable af, b) the creatures are needlessly humanoid and c) the sequence mistakes really bugged me, but I quite liked it nonetheless. It's fine, you know? Not a waste of time, well produced, and did I already mention how much I enjoy Kristen Stewart?
As always in monster movies it's quite an intense atmosphere before the monster shows up. The different effects of the pressure down below the ocean are well done and reminded me of the sheer power something like water can have.
The acting is okay, Kristen Stuart actually really nice when she switches between fear, panic and pragmatism. Just to the end it was a bit over-the-act for me. :)
Later on you feel the Lovecraft'ian vibes all along. Think of 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' combined with some pure Cthulhu monster action. The movie itself is doing okay with the monster action - just too much that the viewer has already seen elsewhere. But for me the whole level of implications behind the shown (mainly from Lovecraft's stories) made it a such better movie for me.
A strage mix of Alien and Abyss paining 80% in pure darkness and using that fact to get me hopping around cos it is using jumpscare mechanics alot. Good and ok looking effects while the audiomixing is really top notch. Acting overall at a level that does not makes it worth mentioning.
Ok so it's not an 8 lol but I'm a sucker for big monster movies and its waaaaay better than the Meg and Sharknado 1 thru Eleventeen... higher marks for Twilight chick goin out with her boots on
The film jumps in with no back story just crash bang wallop, noise noise noise shakey camera. It makes the Meg look like Jaws.
No suspense, no drama, low rate movie.
It seem almost a Netflix production.
4/10
“Should we close that door?”
Yes, you should and start panicking.
I enjoyed this... standard fare but great visuals and neat creatures make it worth watching.
Well done Kristen for some solid acting, for giving us a reason to care about the characters and some lovely eye candy!
Short, sweet and to the point.
6.5/10
I liked it, it starts straight, and they get along, Kristen Stewart, to my surprise, does it well. Being short and not stop, don't get bored
Lovecraftian themed movie flick, which doesn't know its own genre. Sometimes it's a survival, sometimes a horror; sometimes it's a monster movie and sometimes a dramatic movie.
The most interesting part of the film is show very briefly and comes at the end. In short, I wanted to see more from the monsters.
A tense claustrophobic disaster film under the guise of science fiction. Kristen Stewart is excellent throughout.
As someone who loves horror, and the deep sea not being used in horror that much, I loved this movie if not just for the idea of being that deep underwater. While most of the scares are just about the water, there are times in which it isn't just the water the characters are afraid of.
A well-made creature-feature; it may not be original, but it is entertaining
The last film distributed by 20th Century Fox before they were rebranded as 20th Century Studios by Disney, Underwater was shot in early 2017 for $50 million and then sat on a shelf for over two years. Now that it's finally seeing the light of day, there's a real sense of Disney just wanting to be rid of Fox's clutter, and they either didn't know how to promote it or didn't want to promote it, as the marketing campaign has been next to invisible (and the bland title certainly doesn't help), with the film grossing a paltry $7 million in its opening weekend. From Disney's perspective, of course, releasing it in the January release window makes sense, as it's a period traditionally dominated by duds and cast-offs – films the studios don't care about for one reason or another. A recent high-profile example is Blackhat, Michael Mann's underrated 2015 cyber-terrorism drama, which was released with little to no advertising, grossing only $20 million at the North American box office against a $70 million budget. However, much like Blackhat, Underwater is considerably better than most January releases. Sure, it's clichéd and predictable, and it shamelessly borrows from a litany of superior genre films, but it's also a very entertaining and enjoyable aquatic creature-feature.

Apparently I've had an itch for Lovecraftian tales lately as this is another (not obvious from the marketing) one. What it mostly feels like is Alien with some slight Gravity vibes taking place deep in the ocean. And it does well pulling this off...until the sort of bonkers ending when the terror is revealed...and left mysterious beyond its obvious similarities to a certain Lovecraft creature. I was definitely entertained throughout, even though this is a somewhat second tier sci-fi/horror flick. It did look pretty gorgeous throughout, though, so that helped buy into things. And the cast was pretty great for this type of adventure. This will check most of the boxes for genre fans, so go indulge!
A film in a rich universe with potential for great story, made as a copy of Alien, unfortunately, looks weak and not only Bella is a problem here.
If you're on the fence about whether or not to see Underwater, let me just inform you that Kristen Stewart, for most of the movie, is either wearing a shirt or pants, but rarely ever both at the same time. Also Jessica Henwick is the cutest.
The one good point - It looks like an Alien movie.
but like Prometheus, it's got characters I don't have a single care about, and about 30 minutes too much footage -Mostly the underwater moonwalk fuzziness
Tj bloody Miller has too many lines.
these ppl would have gone through astronaut type training, so having the usual idiots in the crew cliché, needing to be told layman's terms of what's happening (especially when the first explanation is perfectly understandable shouldn't happen anymore)
Film that neither scares nor entertains. Totally expendable
Good movie! Better than I expected. It reminded me a bit of the movie 'Life'
Pretty horrible and not in a good way. If you're thinking of watching this, just watch the Wickerman; it's bad in a good way. If you've seen the Wickerman, just watch it I guess.
Enjoyable movie with an exciting and interesting story. It's nothing too special but not that bad too. So if you are a fan of Kristen Stewart (like myself) it's a must-see.
I feel bad for Vincent Cassel's career. This is an ugly stain on it.
I loved it! Kept me excited throughout and I love Kristen :) :hearts:︎

The monster was a Titan from Greek Mythology. Saturn (Cronos), the most famous Titan, ate all of his children. One child devised a plan.
“Cronus learned from Gaia and Uranus that he was destined to be overcome by his own sons, just as he had overthrown his father. As a result, although he sired the gods Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades and Poseidon by Rhea, he devoured them all as soon as they were born to prevent the prophecy. When the sixth child, Zeus, was born Rhea sought Gaia to devise a plan to save them and to eventually get retribution on Cronus for his acts against his father and children.”
Zeus made him puke up all of his brothers and sisters, and imprisoned Cronos.
If we start digging in the ocean, and find a Titan, I am going to have to quit life.
What a load of utter shite!
This movie will drown you in boredom!!!
The thing about these type of monster movies is you got to care about the characters. I never cared for any of these characters so I was never fully invested. The unique setting was kinda interesting but the monsters felt generic. The visuals were ok.
a very very bad movie . nothing to understand don't loose your time watching it
It's like Alien and Life had a downgrade underwater. I can't say I'm a fan of Kristen Stewart and she wasn't anything brilliant In this either. Well the film has It's lows and highs and it's highs were mostly It's action and that was average and pretty much all this film focused on from the start to finish because It was a very simple plot and did feel It was rushed specially with It's runtime and nothing much to it all but it was watchable and didn't bore me.
I cannot see the movie
Beyond dumb. Ranks up there with GoT ending lol.
I will torture my worst enemy with this movie. LOL. It is ridiculous.
This fits into Lovecraftian Horror and if you’re unaware of what that is then you might come away with a sense of disappointment. As a fan of Lovecraftian Horror (or Cosmic Horror) loved the huge twist.
The action was on point and I felt for the protagonists. The cinematography and digital effects are amazing. Allowing water onto the camera lens for longer than any past movie I can think of was a big risk that paid off.
so so only. dont really like it.
I did not think much of this movie, the sea monster were just unreal.
pretty predictable, nothing special just the same story with different set and actors ...
"Welcome all to our pitch meeting! We've got this script of sequences for a great adventure game! It's like Alien, but it's in the ocean, because, you know, we know less about the deep ocean floors than we know about space! There are lots of action sequences where you have to run and climb and crawl through passages and jump and avoid debree and puzzles because everything along the escape route is locked down with codes and passcards and you haxxor terminal motherboards with a screwdriver and the are these Lovecraftian monsters because duh obviously, and multiple locations and suit upgrades and..."
"I'm gonna stop you right there. What if we make it into a movie instead?"
"And I want two Ripley's running around in underwear and you know this Slenderman character is hip with the kids!"
This science fiction has no science in it.
This movie surprised me a lot, I thought it would be another classic about a giant shark threatening the lives of humans but it's much more than that, I loved the whole story of the movie and all the characters, especially kristen. would definitely watch again. loved the lovecraft touch.
"Worst idea ever. Let's do it anyway."
Not sure why this wasn't talked about more, it is actually pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised that they went all out on the theme and had some cool concepts underwater, but I am also a sucker for creature features.
Underwater (2020) is a Science-Fiction Horror movie directed by William Eubank.
After an earthquake destroys their underwater station, six researchers must navigate two miles along the dangerous, unknown depths of the ocean floor to make it to safety in a race against time.
How did this become one of my favourite movies of 2020?! This really took me by surprise.
The entire film was just gorgeous. The monsters were very Lovecraftian and at times, terrifying. I felt like I was watching a (well-made) Alien sequel, which I say as a compliment.
Kristen Stewart was the standout for me. Her performance was great and probably the best that I've seen from her since 2004's Speak.
If you like lots of running around, flashing lights, dark scenes with flashes of something, Lovecraft themed monsters, and grew up repeatedly watching Alien movies and wondering what Sigourney Weavers daughter would look like this could be for you.
But the normal person, I watched it so you don't have to. Despite my hopes, it didn't get better after the first 30 minutes...I think finishing a marathon was easier - and more fun - than watching this to the end.
P.S. I wasn't a fan. Sorry.
A high pressure uncompromising thriller with elements of claustrophobia, lovecraftian underwater monsters and amazing performances. Though lacking in substance beyond a surface level narration, Underwatwr manages to suck one deep into its pitch black, murky depths replete with tense moments.
Better than I was expecting! The ocean terrifies me, and this really captured what I find scary about it. It's not even creatures that are the worst part, although those were well-designed; it's the isolation, the darkness, the strict reliance on machinery and human constructions to keep you alive. If your oxygen goes, or something depressurizes, that's it, you're done. Really nicely done, though certainly not a flawless movie. Given the setting, it was quite dark for most of the movie, including in places where it felt like I was supposed to be able to see what the characters were seeing. The deep ocean noises overwhelmed the dialogue in a few places, too. But the whole cast was fantastic, including Kristen Stewart, who I feel is incredibly underrated as an actress..
Lgbt sh1t unwatchable ... 2/10
Someone tell the writer/ director that anything swimming 7 miles down cannot just switch between the water and the inside of the facility as it would explode.
Mediocre film at best.
At the very beginning, I thought his movie had promise. I liked the lighting, and it created an atmosphere similar to Aliens, but underwater. Also, I enjoyed that the only character we get to meet before everything goes south is Stewart's Norah Prince. We get introduced to other characters as she finds them and learn about them that way. Unfortunately, those are about the only positives I have for this one. Underwater is a real snooze fest. The plot is thin and offers nothing new. Often. it's difficult to tell what is happening during the underwater scenes. The film fails to maintain any kind of suspense and I found myself checking the time constantly. That's never good. I made it through, but barely.
I can barely make out what’s happening :expressionless:
The movie lacks necessity.
It's ok to watch. But you might as well not. I wouldn't call it a waste of time, but you don't gain anything either. I will probably have forgotten about it very soon. Good luck having fun with this one.
i don't like horror movies but this one is like a "scary movie" XD It's not a good one in his categorie but a good base for caricatural movie
the movie started so fast, with no clear reason for what was going on.
Well shot action that keeps you interested from start to finish. This genre is never high level stuff so don't come here expecting it. The performances were good and Kristen Stewart carried it well.
There is an alternate ending there Norah fixes her escape pod as well. Both work as solid endings to be honest but I would have preferred her surviving more
Interesting movie. Action starts in first five minutes and is very face paced until the ending. Not the kind of movie to watch passively - have to stay glued to figure out where they are and why they’re going there. That being said, didn’t really feel overly compelled to stay glued to the film. It’s an interesting plot and setting but never really got committed to being interested in the films suspense/mystery elements. Additionally, the song at the end of the movie was horrid - not sure where that came from or why but absolutely unnecessary. Whole movie in one sentence: Woman on a underwater drill platform saves a few people before it mysteriously explodes, there’s no lifepods so they go to the sea floor and trek across, on the way there’s aliens/seacreatures, they tussle for alittle, the original woman nukes the aforementioned sea monster, the company that owns the drill tries to make it sound like a conspiracy theory. Oh there was also a moral message along the lines of we messed with the ocean now the ocean is getting revenge. .
If you ever wondered what Kristen Stewart looked like in her underwear this is the movie for you!!
....otherwise, meh.
A pleasant surprise thriller. Suspenseful from start to finish.
Average movie. Interesting concept in Deep Water Drilling. Action starts from the beginning, but starts to drag halfway through. I wanted it to end.
Started the movie with low expectations and I'm pleasantly surprised. And it's not because I had low expectations, my expectations are generally low and movies do confirm my expectations more often than not.
Underwater is more of an action/horror(?) movie in a scifi setting with a simple story.
I wanted to say it's a predictable story but now that I think about it, it wasn't predictable, but you do get the feeling that you know what's going to happen in general terms cause it's just that kind of movie with a dull story.
I wish it had quality plot like Sphere (extremely underrated imo) but it's just not that kind of movie.
It's worth the watch if you're into scifi kind of settings. It's mostly the atmosphere and visual effects that made this movie to me.
Shite! I wouldn't bother if I were you.
Futuristic state of the art facility but the movie opens in the locker room it looks like it’s from the 70s. Kristen Stewart looks like hell. Not sure what look the zombie faced bitch is going for...I wannabe a soy boy...no I wanna look like I shoot heroin and chew on fentanyl patches and never take a shower. There’s a couple scenes that aren’t bad.
Big fan of Vincent Cassel, and am glad to see a film that features Kristen Stewart outside of Twilight and On the Road. However, I felt zero connection to any of the characters. Could care less if they all died. Movie was pretty flat.
The Cthulhu monster at the end was cool, though. Would of liked it to have been bigger, though.
What an absolute mess of a movie.
However I did like the diving suit design. Reminds me of Gears of War armour; big suit with little heads.
No Subtiitle
Waste my time
When is the sequel? And why? Why?!
Film quite predictable. It gets lost in its course and turns into a controlled mess. It's worth it as a light entertainment, nothing like an Alien or anything like that. Performances sin in some aspects and some technical details as well.
What a terrible movie, I just gave up halfway through. Might have been OK with a decent script, a competent director, and not having a plank of wood in the lead role, but as that's something very different to what we actually got, we'll never know.
I wasn't expecting a lot going in to this movie and that's pretty much what I got. It's an OK movie at best. There's not really anything new here. No spectacular action scenes. It pretty much consists of everything we've seen before.
I haven't had time to watch the full film.
I was really interested when I seen the trailer. Mostly because I love mysterious monster movies. The movie does give a hint as to what the movie is truly about and I thought it was going to end differently instead of having Kristen be a water bender in her final moments.
This is a movie you will only watch once and if you can hold out, go online when it gets leaked.
Also, I wish T.J. Miller would actually get a role that involves him more in the story.
TLDR: It's enjoyable and try to see it anywhere else besides AMC or any theater that charges $16+ to watch.
Didn’t mind it, i enjoy it
What if "alien" and "the abyss" mated and their child received a lobotomy? You would get this movie. A complete bore. It's so boring I questioned whether the jokes in the movie were supposed to be jokes or poor scriptwriting. The twilight girl did good. But, that's all the light I can generate from this drudge.
The only reason me and my friend watched this is because it's only 95 minutes. Not enough monsters and Kristen Stewart looks like
Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus with that hair
You know how you like the cream part of Oreos but not the cookie part? Underwater is the Oreo of horror films because the pacing was the cream with lots of action and very little downtime, but the action was the cookie because what wasn't cliché or stolen from better movies couldn't be seen through the murkiness.

I liked it, it was really over my low expectations, Kristen Stewart it's great, the story feels good, it's short like Every action movie should be. Nothing new, not the best but it's really enjoyable.
