A very important film, a very saddening story. I still wonder why the girl cried ("not about what they did to her")...?

This may at the surface be a period piece, but anyone who's watched, "Democracy Now!" for any length of time knows torture is not about gaining actionable intelligence, it has historically been used to gain false confession. And, the military industrial complex seeks ever widening scope and funding. So, this is a story book to illustrate how those elements play against the human, "costs," or, how we create seven terrorists for every one that we kill. That that fact is know, but not commonly told (and never plays into the formation of policy) is proof that we (the U.S.) have been and continue to be on the wrong side of history.

Thinly veiled? No...illustrative.

My honest opinion of this movie, Johnny Depp has made better movies then this, Robert Pattinson, I am not much of a fan of his, the best actor in this movie was Mark Rylance, he is reason I watched the whole movie....

Interesting subject but everything happens too slow !

I enjoyed the movie and it kept me engaged despite being very slow. A few things I didn't understand, but maybe the answer is in the novel. I haven't read the book, but I guess it will be deeper and more significant than the film. It was good but forgettable.

Fans of Depp and Pattinson will be in for a surprise here. They play against type and that is just one of the ways the film subverts expectations. It's a pretty good film, although a little confusing at times in the way it seems to skip ahead. Still powerful at times, but it could have been better.

The question is clear: Who are the barbarians? The answer is too obvious, although the look of Mark Rylance's profound performance blurs this obviousness. It's not a film that is up to the previous ones by Ciro Guerra, perhaps because it is too varnished with that Hollywood texture. The creative freedom of the Colombian director is subjected to a certain formal restriction that contaminates his personal vision.

Stunning looking film. Johnny Depp is truly terrifying as a sadistic inquisitor. Deeply philosophical film that won’t set the world alight for those that savour the latest Marvel Superhero movie. To me, this is pure cinema. Remarkable.

The movie itselfs is very well made. The sets and the scenery are beautiful and the acting is very good. It also conveys an important message. Unfortunately the plot lost me around a third into the movie and I never got back in. Whether this is due to my lack of attention or the way this presents itself I can only guess. I'd say it's equal parts of both.

the movie didn't serve the novel well

Not at all what i expected. If you are looking for a high adventure story about life in the Foreign Legion this aint it.
It is actually a very good story about life on the frontier and balancing beliefs against rules.
Highly recommend
