Leonardo DiCaprio Performance Was Award Worthy
Johnny Depp Character was also Great
But Leo Stole The SHOW
Absolutely love this film. You watch this and wonder why Leonardo DiCaprio has only just won his first Oscar! His portrayal of Arnie is nothing short of genius!
BTW Gave this Movie 8.2/10
DiCaprio and Depp we're AMAZING!!!!!!
Very good movie with even better acting performances. Dicaprio plays a mentally challenged boy to perfection. Johnny Depp lets his eyes speak his emotion. Great story of struggle and responsibilities of family, and the balance for personal freedom.
I thought this was one of the better dramas that I have seen in a long, long time. The story is a simple one - all of the characters are stuck in a place where they don't want to be. They're all looking for their liberation. Do they find it? I know that DiCaprio got a lot of credit for his portrayal of a disabled boy and much of the credit was deserved. I know I've written about this before (and it was addressed in Tropic Thunder) but I have never been impressed by an actor playing this character. Depp was by far the best thing to happen to this film, although for the first time in a long time I could stomach Juliette Lewis in a role. Finally, a movie without flash or special effects. Just a good story, that's all I ask.
Good movie and performances. I got annoyed after a while with Arnie. Kind of a one trick pony character and we see that trick a lot. Some characters felt unresolved like Betty and Tucker. The started out good but what was the point? A plot full of coincidences and things happened just at the right time.
Glad I watched it but I think it's a little overated.
From Tropic Thunder:
Kirk Lazarus: Everybody knows you never go full retard.
Tugg Speedman: What do you mean?
Kirk Lazarus: Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed...
This is a great movie though.
Family means everything we believe and we never give up.
I don't know what else I can say but that it's a 'lovely' film. It CERTAINLY should have been Leo's first Oscar but hey, we all know he got mugged off there. I have never seen anyone play such a challenging character so well. It was amazing!
+I'm not a big fan of Johnny Depp but his acting was also brilliant (the casting for this movie was spot on in general)
For the story-line, I can't really fault anything but the time span. It's supposed to have all occurred over 6 days, which makes things unrealistic for me. (IE- Certain relationships, people moving away, major events), I just feel like it would be almost impossible to go through as much, change as much, have your feelings change as much in such a short space of time but apart from that, I can't really fault it. If I would have missed the sentence that gave away it was over a 6 day span, the movie would have been pretty much the best it could be.
It's a good watch and really has you loving all the characters and feeling for them a lot. You have moments of joy and pride then anger and upset and that's what a movie should be like... Basically, it's a movie well done and I'd certainly recommend it.
My favorite move.
A series of marginal characters.
At first after watching for a while i thought it a typical movie that describes some middle class family crisis i was bored after 1 hour because nothing was happening in the movie but the finale summed up the movie pretty well .

What's Eating Gilbert Grape tells the story of young man, who lives in a small town called Endora, and has to take care of his handicapped brother and his obese mother with the help of his two sisters, after their father committed suicide for no apparent reason. The brothers don't live an easy life and they had to grow up fast since their mother due to the misfortune was carried away by sadness.
The performance by Leonardo DiCaprio is absolutely amazing! We look at him and is impossible not to think that he is not actually mentally disabled. His acting is impeccable and at that time he was already showing his amazing acting skills. Johnny Depp has the leading role, which he portrays very well but I think is really Leo who steals the show. The chemistry between the two actors is evident that helped to create a believable story too.
This film is a very beautiful and touching. Will make you feel different emotions throughout the story with very sad situations along the way but also happy and funny moments that will warm your heart. It just simply shows a day-to-day life of people that had to learn early how is to be an adult and face difficult situations.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape is incredibly touching. Worth watching.
