Not that bad movie as people writes below.
The subtitle should not be "The House that Spirits Built." It should have been "An Adequate Cure for Insomnia." 2/10
It’s a movie about the Winchester family. Yes, from the guns. But the director can’t be bothered to know some very basic information about guns, or bullets.
It’s very annoying when you (the director) ‘show off’ your total ignorance in a movie like this.
A bullet doesn’t have its cartridge anymore when it has been fired. If someone shoots you and you keep the bullet, it’s just the bullet.
Totally weird and stupid.
Inspired by a “true” story, Winchester is an atmospheric supernatural thriller. While visiting the estate of eccentric heiress Sarah Winchester to conduct a mental health assessment, Doctor Eric Price notices several strange occurrences, including an attack on Mrs. Winchester, and learns that she’s constructing an elaborate series of rooms to contain the ghosts of those who died violent deaths at the hands of Winchester firearms. Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke lead the cast and delivers fairly solid performances. But the storytelling is rather poor and the director doesn’t really explore the strange and bizarre design of the house to any great degree. Still, there’s an interesting mystery as to who or what is behind the attacks at the house. And, there are a number of creepy and suspenseful moments. Yet overall, Winchester is a mediocre horror film that doesn’t live up to the mystery of the real house and the woman who built it.
'Phantom Thread' was more haunting than this sh*t.
The most hilarious jump scares.
I only watched it because it was about the Winchester House, so maybe my expectations were misaligned. Don't bother if you are interested in the House. Maybe if you are interested in spooky thrillers with the odd weird bit.
Turned out to be a really good flick if you pay attention to it.
Not nearly as bad as critics made it out to be. Visually, it's beautiful and if you're a fan of Supernatural, you'll likely enjoy this movie to at least some extent. Although it may be forgettable and downright silly at some times, there are worse ways to spend a lazy summer afternoon. It's at least entertaining.
Actually not too bad. The acting was decent and the plot worked just fine although I expected more from the ending. Overall, a pleasant watching experience.
I like to avoid these movies normally because I never liked ghostmovies, I scare easily. So naturally I freaked out every single time they added a jump scare. I liked the story, especially since it is based on a true story because that gave this movie a bit of depth, I think otherwise I would've just put it under the catagory 'another ghostmovie'.
Helen Mirren, always fantastic so nothing to say there. There could've been more in this movie than just the usual jump scares.
it's an "okay" kinda movie. at times it felt like a Supernatural episode. there were over 100 rooms in the mansion but we only got to see a few of them. Helen Mirren's acting is probably the best thing about this movie
Unfairly maligned by critics and some Trakt reviewers, this isn't as bad as you have heard. Sure, it's no classic - it's a little muddled, the resolution is rushed - but in the hands of the talented Spierig brothers, there is style to spare. It's not a scary film, but the tale is intriguing, whether you buy into the 'true' story behind the film or not.
It's not a bad movie at all, the story-line is interesting, it just wasn't scary at all.
I thought the movie was a pleasant watch. Not really scary, but with good visuals, acting and a nice atmosphere. I did not mind the plot either. I think it was just not exciting, but I enjoy slow-paced stories when they are well edited, and this one was.
The jumpscares and makeup for the ghosts are very bad, but the photography is kinda nice.
However, the reason given for all these ghosts haunting the house is... well... very idiotic.
Actually I really loved the movie!
I've been to the 'tourist trap' house-museum, and have watched a few documentaries on this fascinating, crazy house. If you are interested in the house, look up a documentary on the subject. If you're looking for a chilling haunted house story, look elsewhere.
Still an interesting watch though...
Decent haunted house chiller. It's not amazing, but it's definitely not deserving of the hate it's getting. While a little convoluted, the logic and rules set up in the film are interesting.
I am thoroughly disappointed that I wasted an hour and forty minutes of my life watching this garbage. It was completely predictable. Not scary at all. All of the acting by all of the actors was completely sub-par. If Mrs. Winchester actually acted like how this lady portrayed, then the house is not haunted, she was just bat shit crazy and felt guilt for her husband creating a weapon that killed thousands back then. Seriously, do not waste your time on this. Watch The Possession of Michael King if you are looking for a good horror/suspense movie to watch! Trust me! I gave this a 1!

I loathe this recurring trend I'm seeing with a load of movies being put out, not just in the horror community. Studios take this engaging and expansive concept that could be fleshed out into a thought provoking and timeless archive of our culture, this Winchester story being the perfect capsule of life and death. There's plenty of interesting shit that's lightly tapped into... but like a ton of other projects of recent, we take this potentially enriching thing and throw it into the mainstream bubble. I can see the executives going, "Yes, this tale of a woman building time capsule rooms of dead people, and where they died, is cool and all... but it needs more poltergeists, jumpscares, and marketability." We're taking potential arthouse movies and slapping a studio coat of paint onto it. It's really disgusting.
In this movie, there are so many interesting conversations that are briefly explored. This woman is being told by supernatural beings (who were all killed by weapons from the company she owns), to build rooms in her mansion that capture their spirits and replicate the location where they died. That is so neat, and it amounts to barely anything. No big message at the end, no character study of this woman and the visiting doctor, who's also troubled just as much as her... really nothing. There's a lot of short scenes that go nowhere and inconsistent rules within the house. It's a generic ghost movie with a promising concept being used as the gimmick to draw suckers in like me. The synopsis is far more interesting than how it's executed.
I give credit for teed-bits of the production design, but we just had Crimson Peak and other great period piece movies, so I don't know what's the point of giving this credit for that. And for heaven's lord, I'm an apologist of egregious jump-scares, but this movie is not helping my case. I can't count how many times I wanted to walk about because of the predictable and ineffective jumps. Let's lock this movie up behind thirteen nails and forget it.
